A group of 49ers fans have raised nearly $9,000 to put toward purchasing space on a billboard in Seattle that will have the image of San Francisco’s five Super Bowl trophies, and they plan to keep it on display into January.

The group decided “to counter the Seahawks’ fans flying a plane with their banner around Candlestick by placing a billboard showing our 49er pride in Seattle,” according to the group’s website, “Seattle Billboard Fund.”

SI WIRE: Cardinals’ Larry Fitzgerald expected to play vs. Seahawks

The group’s initial goal was to bring in $7,000 to cover the cost of the billboard, and as of Wednesday afternoon, the fund had $8,945. The Niners fans will bring some of their good wishes to the Seattle area; the extra money will go toward Seattle’s Children’s Hospital, according to an ESPN report citing information from the group’s project manager, Aasheesh Shravah.

The image of the Niners’ five Super Bowl trophies will serve as the backdrop to an image of “The Catch,” when former Niners wide receiver Dwight Clark had a game-winning reception from Joe Montana in the 1982 NFC Championship game vs. the Dallas Cowboys. The group plans to keep the billboard “for at least one month, all during December and some of January for their playoff games.”

The Seahawks, currently at 12-2, boast the best record in the NFL. Seattle and San Francisco (10-4) own the top two spots, respectively, in the NFC West. They met twice this season, each winning at home.

Sorry to tell them but the location they put it is NO where close to Seattle. Its in a little city called Fife.

at least the whiner fans are donating the left overs to the childrens hospital in Seattle.  I can appreciate that.  GO HAWKS!

I hear that the billboard contract hasn't been signed because the reservation is already booked... so, to the fans in SF (and beyond) who donated, the scam artist is in another country on vacation...

So how long will the billboard last before being defaced?

If I were a seahawks fan I'd organize a flash mob of every seahawk fan with a paint ball gun to add some color to that billboard.   Go Broncos.

The 49er fans I talked to thought the idea of a billboard message with perhaps "Go 49ers!" next to the Seahawks' stadium was a great idea...something of a payback for the flying banner at Candlestick.

That is, until they found out what the message was.

And to a person they were embarrassed and said it was petty and cheapen what the great Montana, Rice and others had done.

They told me these fans did not represent the true, longtime followers of the 9ers whereas they have to throw great championships in another city's face just to make a point.

The true, longtime followers of the 9ers already know this in their hearts.

All of those trophies came before the league watered down the league with the salary cap.  Now teams like Seattle and New England can win the Superbowl.

Ha! Because those 5 trophies are going to show up and play at the Clink in Seattle (if SF even gets that far).

The SF fans that keep hanging their hat on trophies from the 80s and 90s must still think Joe Montana is starting at QB.

Once that thing gets put up...I give it one day before some kid gets up there and tags the hell out of it.  Seahawk fans are serious, serious fans.

Billboard seems like a dumb idea to me.    But I understand why Niner fans scoff at Seahawks fans.

I happened to be flying to Seattle last year for business the Monday after the Seahawks were eliminated from the playoffs.

Imagine a flight with 50 Richard Sherman's onboard.  What a bunch of blowhards.   They were all singing the praises of the Seahawks.    (BTW...  if 50 Richard Shermans WERE onboard, the flight attendants would not be able to move down an aisle because 50 passengers would be holding them.)

No one seemed to pay attention to the reality that the Seahawks had just lost again.  That they had failed to win a Super Bowl (again).   And that they have never won a Super Bowl.

Seahawks fans are seriously out of of touch with reality.

Win something for once and then the rest of us will gladly listen to you rant about your greatness.

In the meantime, get real.  You've never won anything.

What an incredible waste of money!  Why not give the $9,000 to a charity instead?  These people need to get a LIFE!

Here's a pro tip. Give the money to the Children's Hospital then, once those are all fully funded, then start paying for billboards.

When are 49ers fans going to realize that they are the only ones impressed with 5 ancient Super Bowl victories?  The Seahawks weren't even in the NFC West when the last one occurred, 20 years ago, and certainly has no bearing on the Carroll/Harbaugh era, or more importantly, this year.

If the Seahawks win the Super Bowl THIS year, it still will have no bearing on the rivalry next year.  Keep living in the past, and thanks for your generous donation to Children's Hospital.  http://i.imgur.com/XPrvMDY.jpg

The billboard strategy worked out well for the Patriots last year when billboards around Boston announced Ray Lewis’ retirement party on the date that the Ravens eventually beat the Patriots. Taunting billboards are bad karma.

San Fran!  San Fran!  Must you be such haters?  Oh...my bad.  As Katt Williams so delicately stated, "Haters will hate.  That's what they DO!"  Ahh yes...you do it well, Sad Sad San Fran!

Don't hate us cuz we're BETTER!  (Kiss!  Kiss!  On Russell Wilson's Guns!)  Ha!

Let's not let a few fans represent Niner Nation as a whole. Seattle is a damn good football team, and has the loudest fans in the league. This billboard has bad Ju Ju if you ask me.

Wow! That's A LOT of sour grapes. They won by TWO POINTS, and several field goals. DON"T BRAG SO MUCH! You LOST the Super Bowl last year. Get over it. You're NOT going this year. Seahawks are still the best in the NFL. Poor Kaperchick....

How about donating that 9k to a better cause?

Everyone outside looking in thinks we hate each other. Get over your selves, and tune in to some other broadcast. NO(!!!), we DO NOT HATE each other. The 49ers are a worthy opponent. Their fan are just as passionate - right on they should be.

BUT(!!!)  just one, 1, little tiny, itty, bitty, thing, about your Seattle billboard... being ground level, I know someone is going to exercise a bit of creative artistry. I think ya'all might do better with a statement a bit more out of reach?

@JPGits not next to the stadium. Its in Fife which is about 20 miles from Seattle. HAHAHA what a waste of money if you said to put it next to the stadium. Someone should have looked on a map before approving the location. HAHAHA

They may be serious, serious fans. Living in Seattle, they have nothing, nothing else to do.

@Alaska4X4  ...  you will never even have one,,, how's that... hahahahahaha...

where were you last season...oh thats right watching the superbowl from your couch,,,,,,hahahahaha....

You barely beat the redskins because RG3 was playing with one leg and atlanta pounded you in the ground.  I was hoping you would beat atlanta, so you can come to candlestick so the niners could finish you off... I was actually rooting for the pathetic chickenhawks last playoffs.   hahahahahaha...

And what do you do ....you let me down...

FarzoNitas

great rivalry though, with a small set of fans on both sides behaving like idiots. The banner that flew over candlestick was equally classless. I do want to give the billboard fans the benefit of the doubt, and hope this is just for the rivalry, and not commenting on the current status of the two teams. because really superbowls in the past mean nothing for whats going on now.

@Jed1Taunting airplane banners are, too, if the last game is any indication.

Alaska4X4

@Jed1 Nearly every time they will backfire. Most people do not understand what goes through a competitors mind when he gets challenged. It's like unleashing an inner beast that doesn't know how to loose. It's actually the worst tactic you can do, much like flying the banner over Candlestick Park, it will provoke the weak and light a fire in the competitor.

Really want to get your butt kicked? Infuriate your competition with these silly challenges.

Remember, players don't make it to the NFL if they are not motivated by challenges, why add fuel to the fire?

@missgee your pathetic chickenhawks are one and done in the playoffs...

you cant even beat the Bucs at home in overtime,, hahahahahahahahaha

I will be rooting for the chickenhawks  in the playoffs to win so the niners can meet them in the playoffs, last playoffs chickenhawks disappointed me.

I was hoping to face them last playoffs and they let me down. I wanted them to come to candlestick so niners could batter them to a pulp.

@missgee

Seattle has a great record this year, and has played well in some big games (also lost a couple of big games).  But recent NFL history is littered with better records that didn't win the big one.  Just ask the the 2011 Packers, the 2010 Pats, the 2009 Colts, the 2007 Pats, the 2006 Chargers, the 2005 Colts, or the 2004 Steelers.  Every single one of those teams had an as good (or better) record after week 15, and not one of them won the Super Bowl.  Best save those gun kisses until after you do something worth celebrating.

silverpen00

@ShaneMifflinI agree, as Niners fan and aside from good-natured ribbing, I actually have some respect for the Seahawks (except Carroll and Sherman). Russell Wilson and Lynch are okay in my book. This rivalry doesn't hold a candle to Giants-Dodgers.

@YouWishdescribes the Seahawks fans completely. You wish you had the legacy of the 9ers. You wish you could or would win a Super Bowl. You keep wishing, and it might come true. But not this year.

@YouWish Niners won the superbowl last season,,,,, ref blew a holding call last play go back and rewind the game....

pathetic chickenhawks do not even have one and they never will unless they get rid of wilson, can you say over rated.. hahahahahaha

A win is a win....  niners battered wilson last sunday... held scoreless in the second half...

pathetic chickenhawks are overrated,,,,  can you say one and done in the playoffs... hahahahaha

chickhawks couldnt even beat the Bucs in cesspool seattle,, in over time too,,,,   really....get real...hahahahahaha... laughing stock of the NFL....

@expsly12345 I feel the same way. Seattle has a damn good football team. I just don't like the way your coach left USC. Having said that this billboard has bad Ju Ju written all over it.

@Centaur@Alaska4X4 Love how SF fans live by such a massive double standard!  Seattle "barely" beat the Redskins but yet you ashbags gloat about a 2-point win over the Seahawks in week 14 and bash Seattle fans who point out that the Niners "barely" got by Seattle.  A win is a win, after all--or does that only apply to the 49ers?

Only beat the Redskins because RG3 was playing on one leg?  Yeah, you're probably right.  The fact that Seattle's D was flushing him out of the pocket all day, covering receivers, shutting down the WA run game, and keeping the Redskins from scoring for the last 40 minutes of the game had absolutely nothing to do with it, right?

Atlanta pounded Seattle into the ground?  Obviously, you quit watching at half time and missed where Seattle scored 28 in the second half--21 in the 4th quarter alone--and was in the game until the final 2 seconds and ended up losing by only 2 points.  Yep, that's getting pounded, alright.  You d-bag Niners fans say Seattle got pounded, but then conveniently forget how San Fran was getting worked by Baltimore and then turn around gloat about how your 49ers ALMOST came back to win the Super Bowl, as if only San Francisco comebacks matter.

You all are the same whiners who make excuses for your team getting blown out by Seattle at Century Link--TWICE, getting owned by Indy in San Fran, losing to Carolina again at home, and losing to NO by pointing to your depleted receiving corps.  Yet, you bash Seattle for barely WINNING games against Tampa, Houston, Tennessee, and St. Louis when they were missing 3/5 of their starting offensive line and 2 key members of their receiving corps--as if only San Francisco injuries count.

Keep bringing that type of logic.  It only makes you sound that much more pathetic than when you gloat about your 2- and 3-decade-old Lombardi trophies.

@ryankw@LitterBoxer Well, technically your current players haven't lost a Super Bowl because they've never even gotten there... circuitous football semantics...this is fun...NOT.
