Report: Robert Griffin III’s father wants Art Briles as Redskins coach

As the Redskins’ 2013 season deteriorates, reports have surfaced of turmoil inside the organization, locker room and coaching staff. Now Robert Griffin III and his father have become targets for blame. Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole reports that a “hardheaded” Robert Griffin III and and his “interfering” father have become problems for embattled head coach Mike Shanahan and his staff.

An example of Griffin’s stubbornness reportedly came to a head in a recent game. After an errant pass forced the Redskins to punt, quarterback coach Matt La Fleur told RGIII that part of the problem with the throw was his poor footwork.

As LaFleur continued to talk, Griffin grew impatient and brushed off the instruction.

“I just have to make that throw,” Griffin said, according to two team sources who were on the sideline and overheard the conversation. The reaction was not considered mean-spirited, but it was dismissive and spoke to the larger issue of how difficult Griffin has become to coach this season as he has struggled with physical limitations from his knee injury at the end of the 2012 playoffs.

BURKE: RGIII expecting new Redskins coach

Cole reports that Griffin’s father has become a nuisance to the Redskins, acting like the college stage dad that some people warned NFL executives about before the 2012 draft.

In recent weeks, according to two sources close to the situation, the elder Griffin has politicked Dan Snyder to hire Baylor coach Art Briles, who coached the younger Griffin to a Heisman Trophy, to replace Shanahan.

One source who has known the Griffin family for at least six years recently compared the elder Griffin to the late Earl Woods, Tiger Woods’ father and a man who many believe lived in the reflective glory of his son’s accomplishments.

The report cites multiple team sources who believe the father’s influence and interference have made this season more difficult for RGIII and the Redskins.

Or as a team source put it: “Robert is not a bad kid. That’s not it at all. But he doesn’t listen right now. You can be Tom Brady or Peyton Manning or the greatest athlete in the world, whoever. But if your footwork isn’t right, you’re going to miss. The ball is going to sail or you’re going to throw it in the ground or whatever. It just doesn’t work.”

Why not allow RGIII's daddy coach the team???

In the end I think Shanahan's legacy will be the destruction of RGIII physically and mentally.  Playing him till he was injured and then benching him when he's getting well  are predictably bad moves by a coach who shows bad judgement in every spere.

My lord, the media never stops their political correctness.  Now RG3's father gets air time?  Why don't we just give a Lombardy trophy to the Griffin family, since I'm sure they grew up in an impoverished neighborhood, had no money, housing, or food, and were beaten down by everyone.  Poor RG3.

So glad my Browns 'missed' out on getting this guy.

Since RGIII did not finish the season, does he still get his participation trophy?

So there's no evidence of anything "multiple sources believe"...good grief...this is a total fabrication.

He will refuse to be coached and become the next Vince Young....oh well....a promising career down the swany

Yeah he wants someone to coddle his son for the rest of his career. When are his teammates going to get tired of this bs?

RGIII will be out of a job in 2 years.

Also, what a difference a year makes. Last year RGIII was referred to in some circles as "Black Jesus".

this is becoming a complete joke....glad we don't need to hear about this team in January

Of course he does, that would just about satisfy one player and one owner, no one else attached to the Skins would that was a good idea.

Most good players try to get better and learn from those appointed to help them. His reluctance to show respect for his coaches is a sure sign he is on the fast track to total failure. If I were the owner of the club I would send RGII on his way along with his son and give Shanahan a chance with a hungry Quarterback.

Hmmm, compare this fiasco to Oliver Luck, Andrew's dad, who was a standout college QB, played five seasons in the NFL, and is now AD at West Virginia. Says and does all the right things, as does his son.

Question: Would the Washington franchise still mortgage its future for RGIII? Unless he returns to season 1 form and they work some magic in free agency, they're going to be 4-12 (again) next season. Assuming they're not 3-13 this one.

This story is about the power of leaks. Even if Snyder ever considered Briles (very unlikely) he couldn't possibly hire him now. It would look as if RG2 is calling the shots. The negative story about RG3 is an effort to make him look like a spoiled and selfish player (which he may well be). We'll see a lot more of this in the next few weeks. It is highly entertaining.

The story soon may be that Dan Snyder will adopt RGIII if his father passes while his son is still a member of the team. Or that Mrs. Shanahan is looking for a new house in Austin. Personally, I can't wait.

And people wonder why Shanahan would want out of Washington. The team has a prima dona QB and they are never going anywhere. Another Mike Vick or Vince Young success story. No more or less. They will win some games but never a SB and RGIII will be hurt every second season and gradually fade away. He is not ever going to Canton.

Why is it news what RGDeuce wants?? Who is he exactly? His football pedigree?

Ask me who I want to coach the Redskins and then write a story about it. It's just as relevant.

I'm sorry anybody who believes this report has a low IQ. So the writer wants us to picture this totally combative Griffin on the sideline, disrespecting everybody, teammates, coaches, everybody, meanwhile his meddling dad with the face of Jafar from Aladdin, is casting his spell over Snyder convincing him through supernatural manipulation to hire Bryles.

Who is this person that records all of this stuff and what type of connections do they have to know what rg3 is doing and then to hurry after the game and find out what his dad is doing.

THESE ARTICLES ARE WRITTEN FOR RED NECKS WHO ALREADY DONT WANT TO LIKE GRIFFIN, NOT FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO THINK ABOUT THIS WHOLE SCENARIO RATIONALLY..

Let's put Daddy RG III on the side lines with Mama McNab. They can serve Chunky soup together. It would certainly be more palatable then listening to a stage door daddy.

If I were RG III, I would be really REALLY embarrassed.. Do you hear laughing Robert???

This sounds like the most ridiculous madeup story ever made to generate web hits.....of course it is from BLEACHER REPORT. LOL.

Trade RG-III if anyone is dumb enough to take him.  And who cares what Griffin's father wants?  What is this Little  League Father's Day?

Yet another nightmare sports parent!  Every single time a parent is this involved in their child's career bad things happen.  Remember the great Williams sisters' Dad who was thrown out of the stands?  Cam Newton's father soliciting a bribe from Mississippi State and nearly costing Cam the Heisman?  Parents of grade school, middle school and high school athletes scream and brawl every year.  When are these people going to grow up and realize it is their child's career, not theirs!  RGIII will be 24 years old in February.  It is WAAAAY past the time when he should have cut the apron strings from his father and become his own man.  Griffin, you need to tell your father to shut the hell up!

Losers.... i understand why Tim has to write all this crap, because he would be homeless picking scraps from garbage cans otherwise... But i thought sport fans were smarter than that !!!

first of all if someone CANNOT put their name on it i pay ZERO attention to it screw sources !!!

and last year RGIII had the same foot work and it helped him to a rookie of the year completing 65% of his passes WHERE WERE ALL THESE FOOTWORK ISSUES last year.... what has changed other than a guy playing on ONE LEG

last time i checked an even base was a LARGE PART OF FOOTWORK... I wouldnt listen to people either if i was RGIII seems like he knows his footwork is messed up right now and like he said HE still has to MAKE THE THROW.... all i see are a bunch of losers piling on nothing more... if they were saying this last year then i would respect what they had to say.....Funny no one is Piling on Cam this year.... a person cannot change that much in one season...  If anything pile on guys like Matt Ryan, T-Romo, Eli Manning, Matt Stafford and so on... , what is their excuse for being terrible this year...

The Redskins should trade Griffin to Dallas for Romo. Let Jerry Jones and Griffin's father guide his career.

Let's take a poll here.  If you had to select one player to be on your team which would it be?

1)  Incognito

2)  Martin

3)  Griffin

@EaglesPdxIt is obvious to anyone that RG3 has become uncoachable. I liked him at first but it is clear that he is letting his selfishness (and now his father) become too much. He has a lot of talent but he has to listen to others & accept some criticism. He is in his second year & still has a lot to learn. question is will he learn it or just become more bullheaded?

@Darren1

I don't see RG3 making a comeback like Cam Newton.  RG3 is a bust

@JeffOrndorffSnyder needs to tell RG3's dad to bug out & let the coaches & GM run the team. But as long as Snyder gives the appearance that he's gonna hire a new coach & let RG3 have his way this will continue.

@JoyWells Saint Griffin III -- who woulda thunk it?  Look, stop calling people biased who have followed this guy's career and his constant complaining and are tired of it.  He's a spoiled brat who has his father making public statements.  There is a lot of redneck stuff on the Internet, but criticizing a spoiled, overrated brat has nothing to do with red neck anything.  PS:  I'm a socialist -- really.

@fmfrijolesNo, actually this story jives with many other that offer a similar glimpse inside the 'Skins locker room. RG3 is frustrated & now is refusing to accept any criticism or coaching.

@friendly--neighborhood--scrawler Cam is playing very well this year and is actually acting like an adult. Don't compare him to RGIII, the only thing they have in common is skin color and we all know that doesn't mean crap unless you are a black fan.

@axmickl

idiot this was the same way Cam was being treated last year unless you forgot....

all about his character and rarely about his on field play...

you just proved race is an issues at least with you... because you assume i am black because i compared  Cam and RG3 issues non blacks can have that opinion also.... or no???

if Cam  plays like Crap next year then he will no longer be an adult anymore

strange guys like Eli, Stafford, Matt ice and so on....... thier football play is all people ever talk about and never thier leadership or character issues
