Former Nebraska QB Eric Crouch left Jameis Winston off Heisman ballot

Jameis Winston became the youngest player to win the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night, and the 19-year-old won the award by the seventh-largest margin since it was first awarded in 1935.

Former winners get to vote, and even Johnny Manziel, a finalist this year who won the award last season, had Winston first on his ballot.

But not 2001 Heisman winner Eric Crouch. The former Nebraska quarterback left Winston off his ballot completely, he said Monday on The Dan Patrick Show.

He cited “the unknown” regarding allegations of sexual assault against Winston for the reason he left him off his ballot. (He wasn’t alone — 115 people left Winston off.)

Crouch, who was in New York City for the ceremony, tweeted pictures of the finalists and congratulations to Winston, but the Florida State quarterback’s 3,820 passing yards and 38 touchdowns apparently weren’t enough for Crouch to overlook the allegations.

Can't say that I agree with him but I see his point. Not that big a deal. 115 others Winston off.

If it quacks like a duck... There is no proof for the full moon theory, but yet all of us have seen things that make it ring true. Maybe Crouch and the other 115 went with a gut feeling. Time will tell. I applaud him for being honest with what he did and why.

I see a number of posters are commenting without having read the complete report, or even what was in the media.  They selectively believe who they want, and dismiss what doesn't fit their opinions.  The girl had holes in her story. There were witnesses there that watched the encounter (of course, since they were Winston's roommates, they lied to protect him).  Bottom line...Crouch is suspect.  He didn't vote for Winston because of the "uknown," but the player he listed first on his ballot, Arizona tailback Ka'Deem Carey, was suspended for a game this year for two violations of team rules, including a misdemeanor assault involving his then pregnant girlfriend in December 2012. The charges were dropped in that case, whereas Winston wasn't even charged at all.  So much for placing character first...

Crouch is just bitter, Winston's the real deal and crouch had a noodle arm.

Just lost all respect for Crouch. Classless move.

Kudos to Crouch.  Boo to all those who turned a blind eye to a likely rape and voted for Winston.  A lot of them would have voted for Winston even if he were charged.  It would not have surprised me if he had won after being charged.  People just don't care that much about rape--look at Kobe.  Does anyone even hold it against him anymore?

I have a problem with him coming out and saying he left Winston off because of the unknown, because there is no unknown at this point (nor was there when ballots were due) from a legal standpoint. The investigation determined there was no reason to charge Winston because in the opinion of the officials from the State of Florida, no crime had been committed.

Had Crouch said he submitted his ballot early, and when he submitted it, there were still unknowns I can buy it. Had he said he left him off because he felt Winston demonstrated poor judgement, I can buy it. The problem is that he simply said the unknown, and there is little unknown from a legal standpoint.

My personal opinion follows that of some other people who have posted. Crouch was a great college player who lost relevancy when he did not make it in the NFL and now he is trying to stay in the public eye.

Yep, Tallahassee PD tanked the investigation. Kid got away with rape, and now he's a Heisman winner.

I would have left him off, too.  The investigation in Tallahassee was a complete mess.  Until that's cleared up, I would stay far far away from him.

Eric Crouch, trying to stay relevant.  And succeeding, to some degree.

Made some dumb decisions coming out of college, and it cost him a potential NFL career.  I think he's trying to make up for that.  Sad.

I'm happy for Rapeis.    He seems like a classy young Semenole.

Another 'holier-than-thou' type. What he's saying is he thinks Winston is guilty. Didn't they do an investigation, Eric? Did you hear the results? Well, he won without your lousy one vote so I guess you aren't as important as you think.

It is very rare--and refreshing--for a star athlete to not hold anothe star to a high moral standard, although certainly the character portion of the award's criteria has not been enforced often and no charges were filed (although even if not a rape, sex while teammates tape it and try to join in is not exactly role model behavior).

Did he vote for Cam Newton, a known thief whose father could not have been shopping his services without his consent?

Does he think former Nebraska stars--Johnny Rogers, Christian Peter, Lawrence Phillips--who were accused of crimes should have been ineligible for awards?

The police had holes in their story too.  Why did they only get a warrant for the alleged victim's phone and not Winston"s?  Why did they wait so long before going to the DA with evidence?  Why did the school continue to let her be harassed on campus daily?  What kind of school does that?  The whole thing stinks of cover-up in football good ole boy Tallahassee!

It's the disgusting truth.  It just tells you how ruthless most of the American public is today.  Fame and fortune trump everything in the eyes of the ignorant.

@CarlosKeithlook at ben roethlisberger. nobody cares as long as their playing well. ill never cheer for any team that hires either of these guys. the only time im cheering watching these two f-ckers is when somebody knocks 'em out.

@James C Not really the DA chose not to charge Jameis because a convict would be hard to achieve not that a crime hadn't been committed, the two are very very different

CarlosKeith
CarlosKeith

@James C"in the opinion of the officials from the State of Florida, no crime had been committed."

No, the State Attorney said he did not think there was a high likelihood that the case could be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.  Sorry, Seminole, Winston was NOT exonerated.

@anon2790759210 yup, thats why her boyfriends DNA was on her panties, and he refused to cooperate in an investigation of the rape of his girl, totally normal behavior. She can't faithfully remembered what happenned (despite no drugs being in her system and a acceptable BAC), but YOU know he raped her? Even if it went to trial and he was declared not guilty, you'd still say he as a rapist.

James C
James C

@anon2790759210 Did they tank the investigation? The more I read, the more I question that statement. Reports indicated she was acting very drunk at the time she reported the crime, but yet toxicology reports indicate a BAC well below the legal limit for driving, and no drugs in her system. If they knew this information, it is possible that there were witness statements that indicated it was in fact likely consensual and  therefore they dropped the investigation. It only become an issue when the media got wind of it months later. To cover their arses, the TPD had the State do an investigation which determined what the TPD already determined, no crime had been committed.

I am firmly against rapists, and think people who commit rape should be severely punished, BUT, in this case I think this was a situation where a person had consenaul sex then regretted it, and claimed rape.

@chaoticYou're an idiot! Were you there the night this all went down? How do you know this investigation as a whole was messed up? Do you work for TPD, or FDLE? No, you say? I didn't think so. Think before you spout off about something you know nothing about. This is a 19 year old kid that you're making assumptions about and that makes you look foolish.

CarlosKeith
CarlosKeith

@MidwestGolfFanI think you are pretty sad to attack someone simply because he does not assume that a rape did not take place when there is reason to believe that one did.

@DSM Where in the hell did anyone ever say anyone had video of the sexual encounter. If they had video of horny Jameis and his horny friend it would have been played 24/7. I surely hope you are never in a position of needing people to put aside preconceptions and maintain the foundation of our legal system which is INNOCENT until PROVEN guilty! As long as Jameis avoids injury the Mega Millions he will get in the NFL will be a nice soothing ointment after the 2014 season. I would hate to see Eric on a jury he obviously does not believe you should be proven guilty. I guarantee you that based on societal averages that there are Rapists, Murderers, Pedophiles, Abusers ect. ect. etc. in every hall of fame that there is. This nostalgia syndrome and romanticizing of the past is so sad. The fact is, the hall of fame for whatever sport you want to name, would be virtually empty if they would have had the non stop media coverage that we have today.

@DSM Wait wait you said a star athlete.....isn't this story about Eric Crouch?

AnthonyPatterrson
AnthonyPatterrson

@BuzzFrankacott @James C you can say that about every crime a person doesn't get charged for. " conviction would be hard to achieve", thats true when a DA doesn't have a case. And if it went to trial and the DA lost, you'd still say he was a rapist, be honest.

pirate
pirate

@CarlosKeith@James CExactly. The DA didn't say no crime was committed. He said "I don't think I can get a conviction." And in Tallahassee, that was probably true. The best thing you can say about Winston is he got away with it.

DerekSvekis
DerekSvekis

@CarlosKeith @James C   was not exonerated? what exactly is he supposed to be exonerated of? how can you be exonerated of something if it never happened? he was never charged. people like you display the ignorance that bred crouch thinking. dont use half the truth. dont use the story to meet your purposes. ever had someone say something about you that they could not prove? werent you impressed with the few people that had the strength to not follow the herd? that stuck up for you? seriously, the level of ignorance displayed by some people is mind blowing

So because she is intoxicated that means that you don't proceed with the investigation.  Is that in the Tallahassee PD handbook or something?  Another ignorant statement!

@JimSmith4 @James C no idiot, because she is intoxicated the voracity of her statement is called into question. the investigation did continue. and they determined there was not sufficient evidence to warrant charges.
