MLB investigating Yankees for possibly tampering with Mike Trout

A Major League Baseball spokesman said that they are investigating whether New York Yankees president Randy Levine was guilty of tampering with a comment about Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout.

The Yankees could be fined if Levine’s comments are considered tampering.

“We just don’t believe our policy is for players over 30 years old, we don’t believe in 10-year contracts,” Levine said, via the Orange County Register. “They just have not worked out for us, they have not worked out – I believe – for the industry. When we signed Derek Jeter to a 10-year contract, I believe he was 26. In that context, it makes sense. If Mike Trout was here, I’d recommend the 10-year contract. But for people over 30, I don’t believe it makes sense.”

LEMIRE: Cruz, Drew, Garza among best free agents available by position

Trout, 22, is under Angels contract for four more years and is eligible for arbitration starting in 2015. Trout has finished second in the American League MVP voting two seasons in a row. Last season, Trout hit .323 with 26 home runs, 96 RBIs and also stole 33 bases.

what a bunch of morons posting here. and what a bunch of morons are running MLB

are you all moronic enough to think that Trouts agent doesn't know he could get a big contract from the yankees ??????????????????? he would be a pathetic agent if he didn't know !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this is common sense

He's an idiot for using a player's name like this.. he should definitely know better.. but if this isn't grasping for straws, I don't know what is. Rules need to be backed by common sense or they're not serving their purpose.

Randy Levine strikes again.  Since 1973 the Yankees have always has a buffoon at some level of leadership.  First it was George Steinbrenner, then after the old man faded away it was son Hank and finally it ends up being this clown.   The defining characteristic of Levine has always been his big mouth.  Whether as a Giuliani hack or a Yankee executive, you could always count upon Handy Randy to shoot off his mouth.

That is so LAME. Gotta have something to do with Selig

I didn't hear Levine exactly offering a contract and Trout's name was used only as an example because of his age. The old "mountain out of a mole hill" again. Get a friggin life Selig!

This absolutely could be considered tampering. He knows the rules--don't discuss offering contracts to players under contract for other teams. He didn't have to mention Trout. He says he doesn't want to offer contracts to players over 30. Fine. We get it. Levine doesn't need to go farther.By going deeper and providing an example, he's planting a seed in a player's (and his agent's  head) and that's a problem. I certainly don't think this deserves a free pass. You can't discuss players like this---you just can't.

How in the world is this even close to tampering??? I thought he had to be in contact with the player for that to occur???

My sweet Lord. As a couple of you have already said, I can't stand the Yankees. And I love to see them discomforted. But this is beyond ridiculous.  "A Major League Baseball spokesman" needs to shut the he!! up. So embarrassing.

You are desperately trying to hate for any reason. I'll give you one to hate me: twenty-seven, and the total can only continue to rise.

Ok. I hate the Yankees and all, but good lord, this isn't tampering. This is a guy using a real world example.

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Trout is under team control for years and it will be in his and the Angels best interest to sign a long term deal when the time is right. And if he said "if a player LIKE Mike Trout were here" would it still be tampering? It's kind of sad what  MLB nit-picks about and what they turn a blind eye to.

I think the president needs to appoint a blue chip committee to research this situation

Fine them what???  $100,000.  These are like commercials for MLB.  Trout is going to the Yankees.  Deal with it.  Why else would they not tie up money in Cano.

What idiocy.  I dislike the Yankees, but...this is KGB tactics:  "We read your mind and you really meant that you wish you were talking to Trout about a 10-year contract."

What nonsense.  Some power-crazed bureaucrat at MLB needs to find something constructive to do, or get fired.

Old Bud doesn't think too well...  one never knows.

This could NOT be further from tampering.  For it to even be discussed or brought up is nuts.

Levine was just using Trout as an example of a great young player, if he were a Yankee, that he would give a 10 year deal to.  Nothing to see here.

@jaycer809 1000% agree. What if Trout and his agent were about ready to sign an extension and back out of the deal because of this information? In the business world, that's a massive eight or nine figure lawsuit if someone did that.

I'm not naive. I realize this is probably quite common, but the trick is to keep those conversations quiet. The Yankees completely screwed up here. It's definitely worth a fine at the least.

@JohnnyDee1he spoke to the orange county register. you know where orange county is? he most definitely was in ''contact'' with the player. problem is though he is so dumb he forgot trout was all tied up for years. arrogance  strikes again!

@EasyGoerA Yankee fan clinging to the past.. what a shocker. You sit there and revel in your past, the rest of us will enjoy the rings our teams are winning in the present.

@balleerb Yankee desperation still feels 100% better than two thirds of teams in the league in desperation.

@effeweall Because they didn't want to pay that kind of money to an older player?
