The $13 million in buyout costs may be all that is keeping Washington Redskins’ owner Daniel Snyder from firing coach Mike Shanahan, according to Mark Maske of The Washington Post.

Snyder did not object to Shanahan’s decision to bench starting QB Robert Griffin III to prevent injury, but sources close to the team say that it is financial considerations that have prevented him from firing the embattled head coach.

Multiple people close to the matter said Snyder has been unwilling so far to pay the full amount he would owe Shanahan and his coaching staff if he fired them.

SI WIRE: Report: RGIII ‘extremely angry’ about being benched

The relationship between Snyder and Shanahan is believed to have deteriorated quickly since a report was released last weekend that said Shanahan had considered walking away from the team at the end of the 2012 season. Later in the week came accusations that the coach’s benching of Griffin was intended to provoke his firing, so that he and his staff would receive the full remaining balances of their contracts, which would cost Snyder roughly $13 million.

Mike is one of the top 5 Coaches in the NFL, he will be signed real fast by another team.

Dan Snyder has always been cheap and he does not understand the game of football and/or the business of it all, plus he has no humanity of others'

I don't blame him... Its clear Shanny just wants a payout... Might as well make him work for it.

Listen people, the story that means anything at all here that no one is talking about is that RG3 sucks, and if he does finally get healthy he'll get injured again cause he's way too fragile to play big boy football. He's not a pocket qb, never has been

Snyder can afford it.  Perhaps he realizes there is no worth while coach on the planet that would work for him.

Unless cutting Shanahan will suddenly add 30 lbs of muscle to the toothpicks RG3 has for legs this is just one big commercial.

Cause drama and bring our crappy team attention.  Snyder and Shanahan are laughing at the stories being generated,

Shanahan need Victor Conte to develope some "man leg ped's for RG3".  Toothpicks good for shrimpballs, not for NFL QBs.

My guess is that Snyder knows there is no easy fix to this mess. He has become radioactive as an owner who will have a very difficult time attracting a top coach for his team unless he surrenders complete control  - probably including most GM responsibilities. If the rumor is true that Shanahan was prepared to leave last season on a high note, it is too bad for Snyder that he did not. The team was in much better shape to attract a top coach then.

I could bust out the stereotypical response to the reason why Snyder won't pay off Shanny and Co, but I won't go there.

To save $13 million Snyder is going to make Washington fans suffer through another pointless season of misery? Is any free agent going to want to stay in DC or come there? NO! If I am RGIII I tell Snyder to get rid of the idiot Shanahans or I will make a public demand to be traded. $13 million is 3% of the 'Skins $400 million in annual revenue or less than 1% of the value of the franchise. Season ticket holders should be telling Snyder to take the beating and move on.

Shanahan at least has a history of success; regardless of the reasons.  Snyder's history consists of ruining the reputations of good coaches.

Shanahan  is nothing but an elf a midget and a terrible caoch.  Elway made Shanahan.

RGIII may never be a great QB.  Snyder is just an idiot and should not own an NFL team.  But Shanahan is the most selfish, egotistical, cynical person involved.  Other than Elway, to whom he owes all, you would never want to be his QB -- you would have to love the underside of buses.  I especially pity Cousins now because his future is put in jeopardy because of these silly games between Snyder and Shanahan.

If you're going to get fired, might as well go out on your shield.

$7 million a season is good money for a coach who hasn't won a playoff game in 15 years

Shanahan is a joke. He's also a very bad coach. When I lived in Denver, he and Elway conspired against Dan Reeves behind Reeves back. I have zero respect for him.

I'm a Jet's fan, so I don't care what happens to the Redskins (as long as they beat the Giants) but Snyder and Shanahan deserve each other.....

Little Danny is a multi-billionaire and his investment in the DeeCees has made him another fortune.  Given how much money he threw away on Albert Haynesworth, I can't believe he would even flinch at $13M to get rid of Shanny.

Forbes valued the Redskins at $1.7 BILLION. So why would you even think about writing a check for $13 million to potent the value of your $1.7 billion business?

Remembering back...  Marty Shottenheimer, at the time a talking head on on ESPN, talks about what a mess the Skin's are generally and what absolute mess Snyder is specifically.  2 weeks later he is the head coach.  This revolving door has been going on for over 15 years and there is no end in sight.  Snyder has tried old school fundamental coach, new school innovative coach, HOF out of retirement Joe Gibbs coach, College coach, Soccer coach, the Ole ball coach....  None of it ever comes close to working.

There is no way on earth Snyder didn't inherit his wealth, cuz that joker can't make a ham sammich.

And to 2001mark...  just because he could pay $7 million to be rid of the ferret doesn't mean he'd compete.  You haven't noticed it doesn't matter who the coach is?

Here's the solution...  Fire radiation face, tell Lane Kiffin it's his job with a 1 year $1 contract. Somebody like Kiffin has more incentive to win than any dollar amount can buy cuz he has just about coached himself out of coaching.

2001mark

This has been a simmering story since the summertime... pardon the alliteration... It's a $7million issue with some personal strife mixed in yes?

Isn't this also in effect, Dan Snyder unwilling to leave the NFC East basement at the cost of $7million?!  Why isn't THAT ever highlighted??!

For an NFL owner, that's pretty Arena League of him.  He'd rather watch his team burn than doll out the $7mil or whatever it is for a chance to compete.

Skins' fans... why are you not demanding Snyder's head also?

This Mark Maske should be writing for Profootballtalk.com. He never has any facts - just rumors that he spreads. GAwd...the Washington Post has certainly gone from being a reliable source to just muckraking.

And haters think a certain team from Texas (with stars on their helmets) is dysfunctional!  To get something this truly awful, you have to go to our Nation's capital.

@Veejh Look, we get it.  You're a racist.  Just come out and admit it - and while we'll still realize how small minded and dumb you really are, we'll respect the fact that you admit it -and aren't one of those racists who claims they believe everyone is equal, only to make snide comments in private.  You're already a racist, no need for you to be a coward as well...

@dandogwood And Terrell Davis and Denver's running game those two years are the only reasons Elway has two rings.  It's a vicious cycle.

@HankyLankyI hardly think giving Cousins the chance to start 3 games is putting his future "in jeopardy."  Quite the contrary.  If he plays as well as he did in the preseason he may be starting somewhere else next year.   He has no future at Washington.

Dude just needs to stay in the owner's box and away from anything having to do with running a football team.

@NebojsaTodorovic Danny Boy did not inherit his wealth ... but he made it through marketing which he clearly knows.  He does NOT know football or how to run a team.  Big difference.

MaryStricker
MaryStricker

@NebojsaTodorovic He earned his money...borrowed to get started like most...but it was his business, his wealth...the fact you cannot look that up is pretty pathetic.

And he was not really given any coach a real chance. Teams that constantly change coaches are always at the bottom of the ladder...Cleveland, Washington, Miami, Dallas, Tampa, Jacksonville, Oakland, etc...

The owner is the issue of course though.

@John4 Jerry fired a 2 time super bowl winning coach a year removed for his last super bowl. As much as I hate the wasington redskins, 1. I love the fact that they kept their name, and 2 This is still not as bad as jerry.

At least you guys went to the playoffs last year, my cowboys will probable end up 8-8 again.......

@Shooter McGavin 19711 @Veejh Well every Jewish person I have met is on the cheap side. I have a number of Jewish friends and while they make a lot of money they like to pay the lowest price for things. Its not racist to say such a thing -- its not genetic, its what is part of culture. This is generally deemed to be true. What evidence do you have the contrary? Do you have Jewish friends who are magnanimous with their money?

@Mr Roberts@dandogwoodbeat me to it. Elway didn't do jack, but fail in the big show for years. Get TD in there with the running game, and they win. TD leaves due to injuries, and Denver does nothing since.

HankyLanky
HankyLanky

@kendp @HankyLanky I guess it will depend on whether his crappy surrounding cast is better or worse than the awful defenses he gets to play against.  But putting any QB into a situation where apparently everyone has given up can hardly be advantageous for him.

@PhillyPenn Are you guessing that a man who has pissed away megamillions on bad player contracts is too principled to pay $13M for a few coaches?

@LeeCooper@John4 They really should get rid of the name. It's such a silly thing not to give up a name that's been demonstrated to be so blatantly offensive to a particular group of people.

nightdrifter05

@slickwilly @LeeCooper @John4 Why is it suddenly so offensive? Nobody really cared 20 years ago. This is just a money grab. Maybe I should make the Cowboys change there name since that offend's me, the Viking's should change there name as well, the Pittsburgh Pirates should be forced to change there name to because of all the bad pirates did. Get real, only a idiot find's those mascot offensives.
