Jets defensive end Sheldon Richardson, who was selected No. 13 in this year’s NFL draft, thinks he would be the No. 1 pick if teams could do it again.

The 23-year-old, one of 30 defensive ends taken in this year’s draft, told Matt Ehalt of ESPNNewYork.com that he’d likely be in Kansas City because of the Chiefs’ first overall pick.

“Probably No. 1, most likely,” Richardson said of where he’d be selected in a redraft. “Kansas City? Yeah. I went into the draft thinking I’d be the No. 1 pick. I had a shot.”

The rookie interviewed at the Combine with the Chiefs, who ended up taking offensive tackle Eric Fisher out of Central Michigan. Richardson, a standout at Missouri, is widely regarded as a Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate in his first NFL season, and is considered as much by current head coach Rex Ryan, who said in watching him, “tape doesn’t lie.”

“I just look at the film. Base it on production. Production’s a huge part of it. But the way he plays. He’s got that relentless motor, and for a defensive tackle being as productive as he is — it doesn’t necessarily show on the sack total — he’s got 3.5 — but he’s got [27] hits on the quarterback — and the way he’s played the screen game. His tackles are probably among the league leaders for defensive lineman…Tape doesn’t lie.”

New York selected cornerback Dee Milliner before him (ninth overall) and quarterback Geno Smith with the No. 39 pick. Richardson has the most tackles by any Jets defensive lineman, recording 11 tackles for a loss, 3.5 sacks and 27 quarterback hits for the 6-7 Jets.

The team plays next at Carolina against the Panthers on Dec. 15.
