Report: RGIII ‘extremely angry’ about being benched

RGIII is not happy about being shut down. (Simon Bruty/SI)

Though his public sentiment might suggest otherwise, Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is “extremely angry” to have been shut down for the rest of the season, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported Thursday.

NFL.com’s Mike Silver reported that, contrary to embattled Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan’s comments on the subject, Griffin has been shut down for performance reasons — not because of health concerns.

Shanahan announced Wednesday that Kirk Cousins would replace Griffin as the Redskins’ starter against the Atlanta Falcons this Sunday. The Redskins also announced that Griffin would be deactivated for the rest of the season.

Reports earlier in the week indicated that Shanahan was attempting to provoke Redskins owner Dan Snyder — with whom Shanahan has built a friction over Griffin — into firing him. Shanahan said earlier this week that he spoke to Snyder before making the move. But Rapoport reported that Redskins coaches expect to be fired — and they want to, so that they can be “put out of their misery.”

According to Rapoport,  however, there is virtually no chance that Shanahan will resign, considering the fact that he has “nothing less than $7 million” owed to him next year.

Geez. RG3 can go fuck himself. Dude has been an absolute scrub for most of the year and is angry at being benched. Put up or shut up.

He should just be happy that he signed that 21 million contract with 13+ guaranteed last year before they found out the guy is made out of glass!  Knew he'd get broken up when he got in the league with the big boys.  Just to tall and skinny to hold up in the 'joints'......

so RGIII is upset at being benched?  he should accept the coach was giving him a classic cover for the media:  concern for his health.  The coach could have come out and been honest and said RGIII just plain sucks

Here is the truth ... every QB who runs a 3-10 team is at risk of being benched.  QBs get all the good publicity (which RG3 ate up for two years) and QBs get the majority of the blame when things go wrong.  This season, only Matt Ryan can keep his job with a record as bad as the DeeCees, and Matty Ice has five years of winning seasons as a cushion.  Look how long it took Houston to bench Schaub when the record turned back.

Win some games, Trey, and you won't have to get mad.

Why does anyone care what the 2nd string QB for the 3-10 Redskins has to say ? RGIII has been all show and no go and I give Shanahan a lot of credit for making a difficult decision, regardless of what anybody else thinks. Now we just have to sit back and wait for the inevitable race card to be played. Guaranteed.

Why does the coach always have to take all the blame every time a team drafts a bust quarterback. Look at Tampa bay, they couldn't win a game with Freeman. Once he was finally put off the farm they started winning. The poor coach has taken all of the heat and the drums of fire the coach are still going. It should be pretty obvious what the problem was but everyone is afraid to speak the truth because the quarterback is black. You don't see this kind of drama when the players are white.

Who would hire Shanahan after all this drama?

Is RGIII "extremely angry" about being 3-10 in addition to being benched?  Or is it just about being benched.

I will  laugh if the Foreskins win the next three games while RGMe is on the bench.

I truly believe Shanahan's motives are purely based upon winning the next football game.  He had reached the point where "enough is enough" and decided to bench him in favor of a much better pocket passing QB in Cousins.

It also shows Dan Snyder and the Washington fans and even other players on the team that his system is worth embracing....when Kirk Cousins lights up the Falcons' secondary.  AND THROWS THE BALL DOWNFIELD!

It also benefits RGIII.  He doesn't have to play in cold weather, risk injury and can come into the next pre-season ready to compete for the starting job.

.....okay, I threw that last one in there.   LOL!

Bet Dan is thinking now should have drafted Andrew Luck, one thing for sure a whole less drama............

I cosign what Psychsports has already stated. I'm an RG3 supporter, but when he's not good, he hurts himself and the team.  True, its not just his play, it is a TEAM sport, but if he aspires to be a leader, he has to be that way on and off the field! The flip flopping that he does via the media is immature and counter-TEAM. Prehaps by showing (and truly expressing) some humility, he'll at least give himself a chance to evolve into the leader that I hope he aspires to be. I admire his athletic prowess, but you can't just walk onto a team and think that your talent will carry the day with other ten men on the field and 45+ in the locker room with you. Owner, coach, player all need to "stay in their lanes."  Look at the Dallas Cowboys to see how it doesn't work when thay don't.

This dysfunction is a pox on all parties.

Good luck to Shanahan ever getting hired again.  After this stunt, any team that hires this POS will be forewarned of his idiocy.  Shanahan hasn't won a GD thing without John Elway.  And yet he continues to get chances to destroy NFL franchises.

Then there is Dan Snyder, who traded multiple draft picks to get RG3 instead of staying with the draft and develop mantra of his GM.

And then there is little baby RG3, who thinks he can run an NFL team better than his coach, after one season in the NFL.

Only with the Redskins, can you find such delicious drama with everyone being a villain and the losers being the long-suffering Redskins fans.

The running QB has passed. Look at the Birds. Running vs passing? Peyton and Tom are doing ok?  Nick Foles is lighting it up. If you win, you play. Simple. If you lose, you're down the road! The Skins stink from the top down.

How are those 3 first rounders looking these days?  Can you say Akili Smith?

There's a lot more wrong here than RGIII.  Snyder is as bad as Jones when it comes to decision making re coaches.  The nepotism in the Shanahan/Head Coach and Shanahan/Son and O.C. is ridiculous.  Kyle is too damned young to know how to bring along a franchise quarterback and he should NEVER have been allowed to be the offensive coordinator under his father.  At only six years older than RGIII, he knows jack and nothing illustrated that more than the decision to allow RGIII to play hurt!

Kevin11

They've spent MORE than enough time on this. Last night, Michael Irvin just kept beating this to death, and that was during the SECOND day of this. He's just not that good right now!

So now, he's throwing a hissy fit because he won't except the fact that he's not recovered from his injury enough to continue, plus that team isn't anywhere near the playoffs, so just deal with it, RG.

MattAlbrecht
MattAlbrecht

@PritchBombi agree.  just a matter of time before someone in RGIII's camp drops the bomb, "Shanahan just doesn't like black people"

@axmickl quit YOUR race-baiting. Freeman took plenty flack. I've never been a fan, but Schiano sucks.

EricSmith1
EricSmith1

@axmickl You really think RG3 is a bust? He had a better QBR, passer rating, and touchdown to interception ratio then anyone in the league last year when healthy, as a rookie! you are clearly racist. How does Freeman compare to RG3. RACIST!

NeoSmith
NeoSmith

@axmicklAre you serious?  You are bringing out the race card?  And implying that Greg Schiano is even close to being a decent coach?  Have you even watched Buccaneer games?  Have you even read any articles on how bad things are with Buc players?

RobertSmith

@Paulo_S Who would work for Snyder when he goes looking for his eighth coach in 14 years?  The problem in DC is NOT the head coach, but the owner.  Only one guy has been there for 14 years of failure and dysfunction.

@RobertJacke

another Dummy running his mouth....

if you are going to repost the same stupid things at least try and make it factual .... idiot !!!!

less wait til a guy get hurt and his team is garbage before we call him out...

that shows how much you believe in Lucks game... why not call out RG3 when he is healthy on a good time and failing that makes a lot more sense....

RG3            - yards - 3203  - yards/attempt - 7.02  TD/INT's  16/12  sacks - 38 rating - 82.2

Andrew Luck -           3119                         - 6.71                 19/8             -29           - 85.4

Tell me what is Luck's reason for sucking this year?

clbayes

@RobertJacke and how exactly would he have done that considering Colts had first pick and selected Luck?

Akagi
Akagi

@NeoSmithHe won the AFC West without John Elway, defeated the defending SB champions, New England Patriots and went to the AFC Championship...this with a headcase of a QB who finally had a total meltdown in the AFC title game and would soon be out of the NFL. Has say Mike Smith won anything? Shanahan is a good coach, sadly he has yet another non-NFL quality QB as a starter and a totally dysfunctional organization.

axmickl
axmickl

@NeoSmith It sure is fun blaming Shanahan for the incompetence of some of his players and the micro-management of his owner. Where was your hatred of Joe Gibbs when the team bombed under him in his last attempt?

konenp
konenp

@BobDelConte Russell Wilson's team is doing better than Pats or Broncos.  Kaepernick's team doing pretty good.  So much for your simplistic narrative.

konenp

@jbc123 Can you say rookie of the year and 5th best QBR last year?  I guess you forgot to add that to your search when you googled "black QB bust".

Try watching the NFL.  No real fan would ever make that dumb comparison.

@EricSmith1@axmicklNo body's discussing his last year's performance, (thats in the past) it's about how he's performing now, in which is just plain awful.

Gibbs second tenure wasn't really that much a bomb though.

@konenp@BobDelConteWilson's team is doing a little better than Pats or Broncos, not much better. Who would you rather have as QB 3 time SB champ Brady or Wilson who hasn't won anything yet?

Akagi

@konenp@BobDelConteSeattle is only ahead of the Broncos and Pats by 1 game, hardly a large enough gap to say Seattle is far better than either...we'll see in the playoffs won't we?

@konenp

You have to forgive guys like @BobDelContein his mind blacks should not be QB's in the NFL.... last time i checked Rg3 wasnt a running qb  he has the ability to run but his arm is just as dangerous... Last time i checked @BobDelConteyou get pass Manning's 0-line and he becomes worthless , Brady the same... at least with guys like Wilson, Kaep, Rg3 they can win you a game here and there when the 0-line is not their game... I notice @BobDelConte did not mention Cam because he knows Cam is doing more than Manning, Brady and Foles are doing with less Talent... Brandon Lafelle is thier best weapon... when Steve smith is covered... 3 year Cam has been the panthers best rusher and where would the panthers be without his ground Game in last place as usual...

For your Nick Foles if he throws 1 TD and 4 picks he would have the same season as RG3 did last year ...idiot...

plus RG3 had 700 plus rushing yards and 7 more TD's on the ground...

PhillyPenn
PhillyPenn

@konenp That's pretty racist of you to assume he has some sort of bias against black QB's.

Tom52
Tom52

@friendly--neighborhood--scrawler@konenp@BobDelConte I'll take the SB's won by Peyton, Drew, Eli, Ben, Tom, all traditional drop back QB's over the flavor of the week like RG3, Kaepernick, or Newton at this point. Maybe the new crop can win a SB but until they do, you have to respect drop back QB's.

friendly--neighborhood--scrawler
friendly--neighborhood--scrawler

@PhillyPenn

if you dont want to make it a race think pick a player that threw more than 5 td's and not just a black one... because you seem very objective and a person's skin color doesnt matter to you...

PhillyPenn
PhillyPenn

@konenp @PhillyPenn Only in your mind yo.  Try to stop making assumptions about what other people think.  You're the only one bringing up race.

konenp
konenp

@PhillyPenn @konenp Let's see.  Smith threw 5 TD's in 4 years so I guess the comparison to RG3 was a natural one huh PhillyPenn?  Nothing to do with race right?

konenp
konenp

@PhillyPenn @konenp Really? Then why not pick Ryan Leaf or Tim Couch or Heath Shuler (oh yeah an actual Redskin bust who would have been the obvious choice).  Nice try.
