The Yankees have expressed interest in Johan Santana, now one of eight teams vying for the lefthander, according to ESPN New York. The Mets, Orioles and Pirates are also pursuing the free agent, who is in early talks with all teams.

Another of Santana’s former teams, the Minnesota Twins, is also reportedly expressing interest, along with the Tampa Bay Rays and Kansas City Royals.

According to Santana’s agent, Peter Greenberg, Santana wants to sign a contract now if a club separates itself from the pack. Otherwise, Santana is expected to throw in January to showcase himself.

Santana has not pitched in two of the last three seasons because of shoulder surgery. He threw the first no-hitter for the Mets in franchise history just before injuring his shoulder again.

ESPN New York also reported that Santana is “not fully keen on the Yankees because he likes his facial hair.”

Injury risk is the new most important stat. Santana isn't worth more than 1 yr, $2 million. His chances of blowing out his arm by mid-June are at least 80%.

He'll be someone for C.C. to talk to.

He's not old enough to DH for the Yankees.

The Twins should bring him back as a box office attraction if nothing else.  Maybe it would be like the return of Fran Tarkenton to the Vikings from New York.

watch him go 15-12, and the Mets are like "damn"

I can't wait to see Bartolo Colon bat every fifth day.  Whats his average gonna be?

That is a great idea.  He was a great pitcher and seemingly on a HOF track before injuries took the wind out of his sales.  And it is hard not to see how he would not improve the pitching staff.  He will always be remembered as a great twin.

If there is too long of a wait between pitches he may get hungry and eat the bat.

@inthepresent @Willmac7496 Can he get his bat around his stomach?  Legit concerns.  And then there's him running the bases if a miracle happens and he reaches
