The University of Alabama is in talks with Nick Saban about a contract extension that would pay the coach around $7 million a year, according to NFL.com’s Gil Brandt.

Rumors that Saban would consider leaving Alabama if the University of Texas job became available have floated throughout the 2013 season, intensifying with stories of Mack Brown’s imminent departure from the program surfacing on Tuesday.

SI WIRE: Report: Texas denies report that Mack Brown will step down as coach

Saban is already the highest-paid coach in the country with a 2013 salary of $5,545,842. A pay increase would ensure the four-time national champion would retain that title.

I just don't think he is going anywhere. He just says things with a different expression on his face these days, like he is comfortable and he knows he will never have to explain himself.

He said earlier this season that he truly regretted saying that he will not coach at Bama, because he felt that it hurt his integrity, and his reputation and he has to live with that now. I don't think he would go through that again and then try to sit in front of a recruit's mom and preach integrity, honor, family, etc all the other things that fly out of his mouth every other minute.

Also there's that comment by Herbstreit.

The only reason it means anything is because I think he is the only sports analyst that actually cares about what flies out of his mouth and won't say anything to get a rise.

I would not transfer to Texas for the reason of the terrible weather it is always too hot or too cold and never rains

$7 Million a year to coach an "amateur" team for an "amateur" athletic department.  Other people on this thread justify the salary by saying the coach's big salary means big-time millions to the school.

Maybe so, but the only way any of this is "amateur" is the laughably quaint proposition that "well, the athletes don't get paid."  But everyone else does.

What a sham.

Good move.... he's still a bargain at 7.  He deserves 15.

The Mrs said they felt under-appreciated. The university said will $7M make you feel better.

Bama should throw in another (bigger) statue to sweeten the pot.

I just spoke to my friend Nick and he wanted me to tell all of you that he feels very fortunate for himself that Mack is on the hot seat right now, so he can leverage the potential to move and get a bigger deal. It's especially nice when Nick just missed the national title game again. He also wants you all to know that in spite of the many moves in the past, he really does not like moving. It's getting old.

Oh, and he likes Mack, so if this all works out and Mack stays, everybody wins. Of course, it's like when they played for the NC, it really didn't matter how much he liked Mack.

And the extension will last up to and until Texas comes a calling. Remember how Lou Holtz had that  'Notre Dame' clause in his contract with Minnesota? Lou may have a 'Texas' clause in his contract with Alabama. Anything is possible.

If Saban can get bama to pony up $7,000,000/year or more then more power to him. But what I struggle with is when he is already the highest paid coach in college football and Terry Saban comes out and makes the comment that there is a lack of appreciation by the bama fans for the success of the program.  Now, if the Saban's were people who modeled appreciation for the folks at Michigan State, LSU, and Miami then perhaps she and Mr. Saban would have a valid point and the bama fans would be wise to sit up and pay attention.

I don't think there is one iota of a lack of appreciation by the bama fans. Now maybe the Saban's did show their appreciation to the above programs, but if that is the case why are they so disliked there? I suspect it is more of a case where they are now feeling some of what they gave to others and they are finding it doesn't feel very pleasant. So maybe this is a case of what goes around comes around and the folks above are saying deal with it because that's what they've been told to do. Is the new definition of appreciation now a $2,000,000/year raise, even when you are already at the pinnacle of salary among your peers?

It's funny that they think an extension would matter to Saban.

Saban will accept the Texas job right after he accepts the Redskins offer, but before he accepts the Titans job, after he accepts the Yankees job-baseball, who knew. The only thing more intriguing than Nick Saban. Rumors about Nick Saban. Lord Have Mercy!

And just the other day he was reported to have purchased a house in Austin Texas.

@playemballHow many CEO's get paid higher salaries than that, yet consistently fail at their jobs? Banks are a prime example....

mashley278
mashley278

@playemballif you think about it...not really. Consider Saban's current salary - about 5.5M. The football program dropped $81M in revenue into the school. That's a non-profit company, where the coach works from 6 AM to 11 PM 7 days a week, and is expected to win a NC every year. Probably one of the most stressful jobs in America along with the personal tradeoffs (he can't go to the grocery store or a movie like a normal person).

@Oldtimeduffer jesus, some conservatives seriously need to stop watching Fox News and listening to Rush LImbaugh.  It's like you guys have Obama/liberal-itis.  Someone can be talking about coffee and some conservative just squawks something in about Obama or liberals being at fault, etc.

@Lohikaarme - Joe Paterno's statue won't be used any more. And it had a platoon of figures. Maybe that would provide enough brass for bigger Saban?

Nick Saban can leave at anytime and to anywhere, that has always been part of the package Bama gave him, which was basically the keys to the entire program.  And is the reason Forbes immediately came out with Saban on the front coverage with the headline "The most powerful man in sports"

Coach Saban, a control master, would go nuts dealing with outspoken Texas boosters who believe they have a say in things due to money.  That is not an issue at Bama. We suffered so much from 96-2006 that we treated coach Saban like a God.

mashley278

@AllisGraceYes...the appreciation thing would bug me too. They go 11-1 and the season is a "disappointment". That is what she is referring to.

Oldtimeduffer

After the iron bowl there was a story about one fan who was so upset, he is selling all his Alabama memorabilia and won't attend or watch another game until Saban is gone.  I think that qualifies as at least "one iota of a lack of appreciation".

CobyPreimesberger
CobyPreimesberger

@AllisGrace well apprently the alabama offer is 3 million less then what texas is supposedly offering and what the fort worth star telegram, which i just there making things up, but just reason with me texas is supposedly offering 10 years 100 million and a 1 % stake in the longhorn network, if this is true texas your nuts plain nuts, i mean what next 20 million for 5 years and even if not true 7 million is also an insane ammount and shows the hypocricsy of the ncaa that a coach can make 7 million, but they get nothing but a year to year schloarship

@stiffasaward Because no other state institutions pay their football coaches millions. Let's not all sit here and pretend that our country is not already one of the fattest, dumbest, and laziest there is. It's not Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas. It's the whole thing.

Conservative thinks that as long as he has his gun he has everything he needs, meanwhile all the McDonalds he has been eating has given him fatty liver disease. Liberal thinks the south has all of the idiots, meanwhile his old highschool has turned into a meth lab/trailor park because gov. is more interested in spending on military than education/teachers.

But who cares, we have Wal-Mart and Taco bell and we are all too lazy to really do anything about it. And the Walking Dead is about to come on so.....

You sound ignorant enough to believe that increasing spending on education equates to a better education when it only equates to spending more money.

stiffasaward

Sounds just like Alabama.  You can find the $$ to pay a public employee $7 million/year but you can't find any $$ to educate your citizens.

Stay classy Alabama
