The Washington Redskins are expected to target Baylor head coach Art Briles if they fire Mike Shanahan, CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported Sunday, citing league sources.

The report comes amid rising tension between Shanahan and the Redskins organization, which is expected to fire its head coach as soon as Monday, according to the report. ESPN.com reported earlier on Sunday that Shanahan was frustrated with Redskins owner Dan Snyder last year and was prepared to leave the organization after the team’s wild-card round playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Shanahan was reportedly irked by the way Snyder held Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III higher in esteem compared to other players. Though Shanahan didn’t blame Griffin, he told people close to him that Snyder’s words and actions regarding Griffin were “a complete farce,” according to the report.

Briles coached Griffin at Baylor, and the two have maintained a close relationship. In Baylor, the Griffin-Briles partnership helped build Baylor into an unlikely perennial BCS contender. However, Briles recently agreed to an extension at Baylor that would keep him at the school through 2023. The school is also set to open a 45,000-seat stadium on campus next season.

The Redskins’ home stadium was sparsely attended on Sunday, as the team lost its fifth straight game to fall to a dreadful 3-10 on the season.

If Briles is stupid enough to leave Baylor for the Redskins and Snyder then he deserves what he gets.  I don't think he's that stupid

Let the rumors begin! This would be a typical Snyder move. But he should go back down Memory Lane and see how the Steve Spurrier thing worked out for him by going to the college ranks.

Sounds like the Redskins are grasping for straws.

This seems to be really jumping the gun, like making RGIII a franchise quarterback and leader.

Because hiring college coaches at the pro level has always worked out so well. Guys like Snyder and Jones just play lotto with their teams, hiring people that "sound" good, with no football knowledge involved in the process whatsoever. But helluva good choice for me, as a Giants fan!

"If".  "Class act" that  Shanahan. Leaks derogatory info about his boss whose paying him $7M a year so he can get the jump on vacant Texans job. He'll need it. Texans would be very stupid to hire Kubiak Sr, latter was "masterminds" O coordinator in  his early Denver days where Wade Philips was also the defensive coordinator.

Let me see if I understand this...  Mike Shanahan, the quarterback coach in Denver who undermined Head Coach Dan Reeves is now being undermined by a Quarterbacks previous coach?

That could not be possible!

I do agree with how bad a journo La Canata is, though.  I've never seen an article by him that didn't prominently feature - wait for it - League Sources.  El Torito is lucky to be employed.

Jason La Canfora is one of the worst reporters. Majority of his reporting are not true and his sources are awful. He is no Jay Glazier or even Adam Schefter. I

Oh, I'm sure that will go over REALLY well in the locker room.

Atta way to pamper your pampered franchise qb even further; hire his college coach to be his pro coach. Briles would never dare speak ill of Griffin because thanks to his performance and career at Baylor, Briles was able to recruit and attract more players to Baylor and a good example of why Baylor is off to a BCS game this season. Good translating that into a consistant winner in DC though.

Not sure if this is a good idea or not. if he is the "leading candidate", I hope he is able to put together a great staff as this team needs to be coached up from the bottom.

This seems like something the Redskins would do. I guess they want to go back to the days of swinging gates and burning through multiple head coaches in a span of a few years.

If Briles has a new contract through 2023, why is this even a story?

I guess that is one way of telling the rest of the players that your main concern is the QB.  No, that won't cause any problems.  lol

Start with the O-Line and then the defense. Polumbus # 74 aspires to uselessness. He gave up four sacks to Tuck and at least a couple more against K.C. They're gonna get RGIII killed even if he stays in the pocket!

To answer that question, we'll go to our guest panel of coaches - Nick Saban and Bobby Petrino.

@RogerMarcum Right, as if coaches haven't been known to walk away from a contract before. They and/or the team looking to sign them just pays the buy-out and they move on. Happens all the time.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to be rude. Lane Kiffin and Urban Meyer have just joined us. Well, fellas, any advice for Coach Briles?

Ah, I see Norv Turner and Steve Spurrier have joined us as well. Welcome, coaches, and thanks for offering that thought.

Or, if he has the lovestruck look in his eye when he interviews you, stick it to him! If you're gonna get screwed, make sure you get kissed first.
