Second baseman Brandon Phillips has been the subject of trade rumors for much of the offseason, but Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said on Saturday that any rumors linking him to the Yankees were leaked by New York as a negotiating tactic in their dealings with Robinson Cano.

Cano signed a 10-year deal with Seattle on Friday, and the Yankees reportedly inquired about Phillips as a Plan B.

SI WIRE: David Ortiz: Yankees lost “the face” of their team in Robinson Cano

With Jocketty’s latest statement, it appears any potential deal is off the table.

Phillips, who is 32, has four years and $50 million left on his contract. He is coming off a solid year in which he finished fourth in the National League with 103 RBIs and won his fourth Gold Glove.

In 12 major league seasons, Phillips has a .271 batting average, 166 home runs and 704 RBIs.

Reds have a great team, got unlucky by only getting 60 innings out of Cueto last year, but still did good. With Cueto, Latos, Bailey, Chapman and Cingrani they'll have a shot to get as many wins from pitching as any other team. Shame they can't keep Choo, but a new manager using a half-way intelligent platoon for the missing outfield spot will help. Losing Choo and Dusty Baker is about a break even proposition in terms of wins.

103 RBI ?

that makes him sound like he is as good as Cano who many people say is the best player in the universe.

Yankees dont have the chips to trade for such a favorable contract.  They would need to give up 2 top prospects for an 80 RBI, 10+ HR, gold glove middle infielder with such a palatable contract

Phillips can't handle the big city.Period. He likes being the big fish in the little pond. As a Reds fan I hope he stays regardless of the Cano to Seattle thing.

Mr. Steroid thinks the Yankees lost the face of their team. What's the face of the Red Sox, a giant hypodermic needle or a pill box.

4 years for $50 is honestly one of the best deals available right now. I would have no problem if my team went after him.

I'd bet this is one of those "Happens all the time but the unwritten rules say nobody talks about it" type of situation in sports

You should not be able to bring in another team like this. The Yankees are scum

Thats just dumb. Reds are still the 3rd best team in the Central and they have gotten worse so far this year.

@joe6647 I didn't realize it was 1970.  Nobody who knows anything about baseball uses RBIs to evaluate baseball talent.  Phillips is a wizard with the glove, but offensively his career numbers are mediocre (career OPS+ has him below the average MLBer by four percent).  So no, he's not going to bring a haul of two top prospects - he's 32, he's great defensively, but he brings very little to the plate.  Literally.

And you're a bonehead. Fact; Ortiz was tested positive for an "illegal substance" prior to testing in 2003. MLB has never told us what that substance was. They implied that it was possibly "legal" prior to becoming "illegal". It could have been a stimulant. It could have been something similar to what you find in health stores. Nobody is saying anything. Fact; It was Ortiz and about 100 other players on that particular list. David Ortiz has NEVER tested positive for PED's unlike your butt boys Arod, Clemens, Giambi, And the list goes on. You Anna call a spade a spade? Then complain about Manny, a known juicer. As far as the other bonehead "kiakwat", yeah miraculous. Shows how much you know about baseball. How many times was Ortiz tested in 2013? More than you have brain cells. You guys rare pathetic and are endemic of everything that is wrong with pro sports fandom. Losers. You're probably just learning how to wear mens clothing again.

@Scramble

I agree. Big Poppy-seed as in opium always has something to say about the Yankees. Dines with A-Roid and never did explain how and why he tested positive. Remember the season a few years ago when pro scouts said he was done? Miraculous, ain't it?

So wait...the guy who is as likely to have leaked it says "ooh, they did it!" and you buy it? Ever hear "he who smelt it, dealt it"?

that assumes that the formulas are accurate and the statistical process is good.

according to that approach all a GM has to do is get a bunch of players with good stats.

I don't think the real world works that way

@HankSchrader Wheter this is correct or not does not change the fact that he is a TRASH MOUTH!  His understanding of the English language is limited to Explitives and hand jives. Not what a franchise wants for PR.

When did ARod test positive? He was on the same 2003 list. Other than ARod admitting he used in Texas, when was there a positive test? When was he suspended? Just curious Hank.

@HankSchrader Side note.  If you bash people, make sure you can spell. Despite that, a very accurate & thorough rant. Most "fans" don't realize that things like pre-workout powders, creatine, andro, protein powders and various other supps, that are perfectly legal for you & I to use, have ingredients that are banned by MLB. Then again, have you seen the condition of most sports fans lately?
