The Mariners walked away from negotiations Thursday with Robinson Cano when Jay Z upped his ask to 10 years and $252 million, according to the New York Daily News.

But the two sides resumed talks on Friday and agreed to a 10-year, $240 million deal.

Cano and his rapper-turned-agent Jay Z and CAA’s Brodie Van Wagenen reportedly had assurances of a deal with the Mariners for nine years and $225 million, but Mariners chairman/CEO Howard Lincoln reportedly “exploded” Thursday night when Jay-Z demanded an additional year.

The Yankees made Cano an offer of seven years for $165-$170 million and reportedly had not heard back from Cano or his agents as of late Thursday night, and will not be willing to up their offer to $200 million.

An industry official told the Daily News earlier this week that a $200 million offer from the Yankees was “never going to happen,” adding, “If that’s the offer and he wants to go there, he’s going to be a Mariner.”

A deal with Jay z is a deal with the devil and is tainted. He souled his soul to bophomet. Cano is now cursed. Money and greed rule these men. May they see the light lord before it is to late. God Bless.

Let Cano go. He dogs it to first base because he's a little too cool to be bothered hustling. It will only get worse if he locks in a long-term contract with the Yankees. Buh-Bye.

You have to wonder what kind of ball he'll be playing at the age of 41, but by then he'll already have all the money.

Can we get Lil Kim in to close the deal?  There's almost no limit to urban street smarts of hiphoppers.

To paraphrase Michael Kay  "See Ya"   Dumb move going from baseball immortality to baseball anonymity. See how much money you make in endorsements Robbie.  Is JZ going to Mariners games???

oh yeah, they're dead, that's why he just signed a 10 year 240 million contract with them!

Every picture I see of Jay-Z he appears about a half-hour removed from a lobotomy.

You can't judge the agent's success or failure until a contract is signed. Additionally, press reports regarding any specific contract demands are just that– reports– and as such could be as much misinformation as anything else.

Dumb move by Jay-z, but the Mariners are doing the Yankees a favor.  By crapping on this deal and the market being relatively thin for his rich demands, Cano's team now has to scramble back to NY with their hands out. And the Yankees get their man at a price they are willing to pay.  If Jay-z is smart and takes the already ridiculous nine-year deal in Seattle, the Yankees are left with an unnecessary piece in Ellsbury and the team is actually worse swapping Cano for Jacoby.  Seems like the Yanks win with this stupidity.  This is when the Red Sox should swoop in and give Cano seven years at $185 and see what happens.  Not that he would take it if he thought more money was out there, but that would totally burn the Yanks.

Why would anyone in their right mind trust their future to a rapper turned wannabe agent, the guy is a joke with a big ego.  Nice move Cano, now you can go crawling back to the Yankees and take their 170 million.

Awesome.  It's great to see the "new guy that thinks he knows everything" overplay his hand, and shoot himself in the foot.  Does Cano not realize he is a guinea pig right now for a guy with a bigger ego than Scott Boras?

This makes me nervous...the other team people said could get Cano is the Nats.  If he's not going to NY, and he's not going to Seattle, I just hope Washington doesn't pay A-Rod-on-PEDs  money for him.  Would love to see him here, but not for that kind of money.

Good luck buddy!  Looks like no one is willing to pay you what you want.

Cano's agent should change his name to Cra-Z.

Seattle, you got lucky!!!  Nine years and $225 million is cray cray crazaayyyyyyy!  He ain't worth half that and nine years?  Way tooooo long.  Can't believe any team in this day and age would offer a guy over $20 million esp when you have a LOT MORE HOLES than 2B. :D

JayZ should stick to his own profession of being a plumber. He knows nothing about negotiating sports contracts.

Mariners temporarily saved from themselves.  Obvious there's a lot of new money coming to MLB teams this year, and Cano has had a very good career to date.  With that - decent chance that this would be a disastrous contract after year three or so. The Yankees could handle that if that happened.  The Mariners?  Doubtful.

JayZ is becoming the new Scott Boras and is quickly gaining a toxic reputation - among teams and fans. This will quickly backfire - as early as the Cano negotiation,  if not then on the next one.   In the interim teams are shoring up 2B - Cano may end up with a far less lucrative contract.   So much for "catch me at the X with OG at a Yankee game"

diehard Yankee fan here, go ahead and hate me for that. I love Cano, I do. I think he is awesome, don't care for Jay-Z. Now, I pray that Cashman (by the way, his last name sounds like what they would pick if they were making a comic book about the Yankees.) doesn't make another bad signing like he did with Ellsburry. I think a 7 year deal is not great, but if you get him to produce at the level he has for 5 years and the next two he sucks, I can live with that. Tex is in decline, Jeter is a statue who should swallow his ego and be a DH or in the outfield. Our pitching staff is poor, we need a new closer. So yeah, Cashman please, pretty please stay firm, know that you are dealing with a first time agent, and take him to the cleaners. Cano, NY wants you back, but not for 9 or 10 years, deal with that. If he goes to the M's, best of luck to him.

Jay-Z is WAY over his head.  He has only two teams in play and after the Yankmes signed Ellsbury, the amount of money they will be willing to give Cano is much less.  Jay-Z blew the Mariners offer.  Cano, you got punked.

Mariners, don't be upset.  Dumb (Cano) and Dumber (Jay-Z) just saved you guys from a HUGE mistake.  This signing would have been as bad a A-Roid's.  At his best Cano wasn't close to what A-Roid produced (juiced up of course).  Now Dumber (Jay-Z) is going to have to explain to Dumb (Cano) why no one else wants him, or at least for that many years and that many dollars.

@CindyBetris oh yeah? THEY JUST LOCKED A 10YEAR 240MILLION DEAL, SO I THINK HE'S DOING A PRETTY GOOD JOB AS A AGENT.

Does Shock G start the negotiations and then when things get hairy Humpty Hump steps in to finish it off?

@Fairisfair The Red Sox are not going after Cano if they already have the Laser Show signed for 8 years $110M. Robbie should take the deal that the Yanks have on the table already before they sign someone else and meet their $189M goal.

jimmyjon_55555
jimmyjon_55555

@Fairisfair  the yanks needed an outfielder in the worst way - calling ellsbury unnecessary?  doesnt make sense.  and - boston would have to bid more than 185MM-  if the yanks are at 175MM to get him.    i think the yanks offer 8yrs at $200- both sides save face and should be happy.

Although, this could be Cano getting cold feet about going to seattle, and they knew the additional year and money would kill the deal they had in place. It might make him sound greedy, but in the end, he probably would prefer to stay in pinstripes for less. I'm betting he signs a deal in the next 4 days with the yanks for 7-8 years, and $175-$185 mil.

Huskerstildeath

I don't care for Boras, but the dude is a viper, JayZ is just a famous rapper. Those two are not in the same playing field.

stabmasterarson21

@Huskerstildeath The Ellsbury deal is whack!  I wonder who had more influence into wanting to pull the trigger on that one, Cashman or the Steinbrenners.

mjt424
mjt424

True. Jay-Z is overplaying his hand and is not collaborating with the Mariners. He's simply focusing on price and trying to maximize it. Does that best serve Cano? Maybe Cano doesn't want to go to Seattle and if that is the case, fine. However, if the player wants the money and the organization, like the M's want him, then it is short-sighted to let focus on one issue and risk doing a deal.

Seattle appears to know their reservation/walkaway price. Will they stick to it? Jay-Z is testing the waters. If the M's hold firm, we'll see if Jay-Z and Cano are bluffing.

@Old Schoolers Dumber doesn't know. The free agent value of post-30 players has taken a hit in the post-steroid era. Many teams who did not understand this still signed guys to big contracts and got hurt, namely, the Angels.

Fairisfair
Fairisfair

@jimmyjon_55555 @Fairisfair Yes, Boston probably would have to bid more, which I stated.  However, the Yanks had MUCH more glaring needs.  Ellsbury would have been around until January.  Cano is a better player...get him signed.  They need pitching in the worst way.  Beltran would have been fine in center.  2016 payroll currently on books: Red Sox - $16M Yankees - $123M (Tex, A-Roid, CC, McCann - retirement home).  Still say Ellsbury was a dumb signing.

"Post" steroid era?  It may not be steroids any more, but guys are still getting busted for PED's every year.

If Boston gets Shin Soo Choo, they'll be getting a better all-around player than Ellsbury. That's the potential move people should be watching. Cano's a great player of course but there's not a chance on Earth they'd move Pedroia off 2B. And why should they?
