The Philadelphia Phillies are placing closer Jonathan Papelbon on the trading block, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Papelbon is scheduled to make $26 million over the next two years, with a vesting option for an additional $13 million in 2016. The five-time All-Star does have a limited no trade clause in his contract with the team which will allow him to create a list of 12 teams which he can be traded to.

Papelbon has been with the Phillies since the 2012 season after spending the first seven years of his career with the Boston Red Sox. He recorded 29 saves for Philadelphia in ’13.

Papelbon has always been, and will always be, a legend in his own mind.  Too bad.  He was a nice kid when he came up, and the red Sox made him. He always felt it was the other way around..that he made the Red Sox.  The Phillies stink since his arrival and the Sox are world champs.  End of story.

If a team can get the Phillies to eat a third to half of that contract Papelbon would be a great pick-up. He is still one of the top five closers in the game.

Please trade him, as a devout fan I was appalled by his comments about the team not winning after he blew 4 saves in that month. #notpartofthesolutionyourtheproblem

Yeah, no one saw this coming when he was signed.

I think the Yankees should try to pick him up, but he might not be old enough for them.

It doesn't seem like ANYBODY will be saving many games for the Phillies this year.  Might as well trade Papelbon and start rebuilding Philly

hoping he can Riverdance his way out of town

Haha. Everyone but the Phillies knew this was a bad deal from the start. They won't be able to move him without eating salary, and they won't be getting much back.

Maybe the yanks would take a shot with this guy as long as the phillies pay the majority of this papelbon salary but the truth is does the yanks have any prospects or player that would entice the phillies???

Trading Paps sounds too good to be true.  No one is going to take him without the phils eating a serious chunk of his salary.  That will leave the Phils with very little to spend elsewhere, thus defeating one of the main reasons for getting rid of him.  The only positive to come out of it would be they would get rid of his bad attitude in the clubhouse.

@NeoSmith Red Sox fans saw it coming. He said he "owed it to other closers" to make as much $ as he could and compared himself to Mariano Rivera...

Smartest move by Theo Epstein besides Curt Schilling!

Nah - the Yanks only use HOF-level closers.

@josebier Phils should have rebuilt after they lost in 2011..we're all dealing with Rube..the Fire Rube chants are louder than the Fire Andy Reid chants when he was with Philly..instead this guy insists that the Phils are still WS contenders and continues to invest in aging players..i mean we still have Doc on our team..great player..FHOF..but he's done.

maybe, phillies must pay a huge chunk

@tom o @NeoSmith He couldn't carry Rivera's jock. Rivera is a legend, Pap is a legend in his own mind. I was glad to see him gone from the Sox...don't think we're missing him much.

Many Phillies fans think his name should be "Ruin Tomorrow"

@sportsGuy12 The Phillies will only pay a huge chunk, if they get good prospects in return. The better the prospects, the more they will pay and vice versa. Do the Yankees even have any decent prospects? They will also lose quite a few picks with their signings of FA so far. But who else but the Yankees would be dumb enough to make such a move.

Good choice for both Papelbon and the LAA. i'd like to see Pap as a starter, For the Halos. He could be your #5. Probably be a 5 inning guy for most of 2014. He had a lot of promise as a starter when in the RS farm system,
