Boise State football coach Chris Petersen will be named Washington’s head coach on Friday, ESPN’s Joe Schad reports.

Petersen had been linked to the opening at Washington since Steve Sarkisian left the Huskies for USC. ESPN’s Brett McMurphy had previously reported Petersen would interview with the school.

STAPLES: Sizing up possible BCS controversies

Petersen is 92-12 at Boise State since becoming the Broncos’ head coach in 2006. In 2009, he was a candidate for the Washington job before Sarkisian’s hire and was considered a candidate for recent openings at USC and UCLA.

Schad reports that Petersen will be one of the highest paid coaches in the Pac-12.

I am a Coug but I live in Boise and you guys got one heck of a coach. He has proven time and time again he knows how to coach a football team. He has lost coordinators every year and been able to maintain a high level of play despite losing coaches.

Another thought, he joins his old defensive coordinator in Washington.

Husky fans! Watch out for some fun football you guys are in for a treat.

Chris Petersen is in the same mold as Chip Kelly.  He will do really well and the fans will be excited.  Good move for him.  He could never win the National Championship at Boise.

Oh boy, that's great, now I suppose the Huskies will have a purple field!

I'm glad to see this move for Petersen.  I appreciated his loyalty to Boise State, but it was probably time for a move if he was ever going to make one.  The Pac-12 is stacked with good coaches!

Really curious what Chris Petersen can do with current talent on Washington's roster.   There are three Elite 11 quarterbacks who are freshman/sophomore on the roster and stacked group of wide receivers.

Nothing lasts forever, but I will miss him at Boise.  He put together a real Cinderella story there, taking a college that was just barely more than a junior college to national recognition.  I've never been to Boise, and live a couple of thousand miles away, but he made me a fan.  I will never forget the Statue of Liberty play that beat Oklahoma and showed Boise was for real.

Our field was Blue long before Peterson....but that is funny.
