Miguel Cabrera will move from third base to first base for the 2014 season, Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski confirmed Wednesday.

The move of Cabrera, the 2013 American League Most Valuable Player, across the infield was expected after the Tigers traded first baseman Prince Fielder to the Rangers and prospect Nick Castellanos available to play third for Detroit.

Cabrera revealed in November that he told the Tigers he wanted to make the move.

Two years in a row Cabrera has been hurt late in the season going into the playoffs.  A healthy Cabrera could have compensated for a struggling Fielder in Boston.  Getting Cabrera through the season is big.  If 1B is less demanding, hurrah.

Cabrera put alot of effort into playing 3rd and took it upon himself to play the position as best he could knowing with Prince in the lineup they needed Cabrera to move to 3rd. I can't think of many $20 million/yr stars who would change positions for the betterment of the team.  That said, I'm glad he's moving back to 1st, less wear and tear on the best hitter in the game

I watched Cabrera as much as I could living in CT. I think people are a bit to harsh on him and his play at third. It was not amazing, but it was decent.  Having said this the Tigers organization and fan base has to feel a lot better knowing he will be on first.

I was wondering what TIgers fans thought about this trade. It won't happen, but I thought about it.

A three way trade,

1. The Reds ship Brandon Philips to the Dodgers

2. The Tigers ship Ian Kinsler to the Reds

3. The Dodgers send the Tigers cash (maybe 5-10 million)

4. The Tigers sign Cano for 18-20 million a year

I sent this to MLB network this morning to see if they could talk about it on Hot Stove just for "hah's".

This headline messed me up:  I couldn't understand why Tiger Woods would ever need Angel Cabrera to play first base.  At best, I would have thought DH.

This is part of the reason Fielder was traded.  Cabrera is more important to the Tigers and his comfort level at first base is much higher than at third.

@JohnStevens Not only his comfort level, but his skill set is much better suited to play 1st and he's solid there. Also, with the wear and tear from last year's groin/hip injuries it doesn't make sense for him to play 3rd.

@JohnStevens Yeah, he was so uncomfortable the past two years that he won two MVP trophies and hit for the first Triple Crown in 40+ years.

@JoeCabot @JohnStevens Joe, imagine what the guy's going to do at a position that is second nature to him now.  It makes more sense.  First base is less physically demanding for someone with his body type.  He's going to be that much more of a threat next year.
