Florida State Attorney Willie Meggs said Wednesday that he plans to reveal the results of his office’s investigation into the alleged sexual assault case involving Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston at a press conference at 2 p.m. Thursday.

An alleged victim said that Winston raped her last December, while Winston’s attorney said the sex was consensual.  The alleged victim’s family released a statement two weeks ago questioning the investigation.

Winston has not commented on the case and has continued to play for the top-ranked Seminoles. They play in Duke for the ACC Championship on Saturday.

There is so much national focus on this case that the only way Winston is not charged with something is if she does not wish to pursue this case. If boosters have made a side deal with the victim to encourage her cooperation to drop the accusation, the case can be closed. It is very difficult to prove sex with a drunk girl was consensual if she claims it was not - a fact that a grand jury would agree with.

If I were a betting man, nothing will happen. If this girl were really raped, this would have came out at this time last year. If it was consensual sex, she has no business claiming it was rape. Of course no woman should be raped, but like I said before, the timing of this was very odd. Could it be because Winston is about to win the Heisman and FSU is on the cusp of playing for a national title, and someone was looking to bring him and the team down, hmmm?

I don't understand the comments that "he walks" or he getting off "scott free'?

Why make it sound like he is getting away with something? If they had consensual sex, there is no crime. It's just  two college kids having sex. Like that's never happened before?

also the fact winston will finally talk at 7:00 Pm, means his attorney's likely have already been notifued that no charges are coming, as again people that have worked with this attorney, he would not have a media event if charges were coming

Let's all guess: the rednecks let him walk…so they can all go to the Championship game.

How many FSU boosters contributed to the "fund" to help settle this matter out of court?

We all know everyone is thinking this is what happened.

Vegas is betting he walks. You can still bet the game anywhere you like at FSU -29.

maybe they are giving him time to turn himself in, before taking him in, in front of the cameras ect.ect.  i do not see how they  can not charge him if the women corporates. at least some charge will come of that.

If he's not getting charged then the presser can wait...Obviously, he's walking scott-free on this one...

Inconsistent witness statements are death in a rape prosecution, and you've got big inconsistencies here. If the young lady has already spoiled her credibility, why put everyone through this?

If the investigation is complete and he is guilty, he would already be in police custody. As someone said below, who makes an announcement to arrest someone?

They should make the announcement and then hold a press conference to answer questions. It's going to come off bad regardless. Amateurs.

If charged, it is likely Winston will never play for FSU again. FSU will have moved on WELL before this case is decided, if charges are filed. Charge essentially equals conviction for him in this case contrary to popular belief. Winston is not an NFL star (e.g., Ben Roethlisberger) with the franchise plan and cash required to assist the victim (legit or otherwise) with her decision (to drop the claim). Ben has at least a couple known allegations, one of which resulted in a settlement. Winston does not have the luxuries of NFL success and Super Bowl stardom. College is a training ground (for sports too); past and present performance is not an indicator of NFL success. He’s a very good QB but he’s a college QB, hence, completely expendable. If this case goes to court it will always be perceived as her word against his regardless of the outcome. Unfortunate for him, if it was consensual, but that's the reality unless she (in the next few months) recants and says the sex was consensual.

WHO*IS*ESPN
WHO*IS*ESPN

NO chance he is charged. WHO has a press conference to announce an arrest? They will use the standard b.s. like "due to incomplete evidence and the time line involved, we feel there is no justification to arrest him". Jig walks

@doublejtrain68 The only "timing issue" is with the police department, this was something she reported the night it happened and apparently his DNA was found in her panties... I don't know a lot of women who go to the police after consensual sex and call it rape.

@juan.triumph1 A friend of yours comes to your house one night and when you open they door he sticks a gun to your head and ask you to give him all your money.  You go to the cops and tell them it was a friend.. they go to the friends house and ask him what happens.. the friend tells them that you loaned him some money, and he doesn't understand what all the fuss is about and the police drop the charges and tell you not to worry, he is a friend and will probably pay you back someday.  I wonder how you would feel?

@CobyPreimesberger They could be giving him time to turn himself in,post bond, then have his attorney make a statement. Remember the Kobe situation? He held a press conference to say he was innocent and he was going to fight the charges. We all know how that one ended

phionesymphony

@DavidHarte That's a bit cynical, and I don't think the decision of charging him or not has to do with the Championship game.  It all comes down to whether there are enough evidence to charge him.

The only thing you can claim is that the police botched the initial investigation, and that there could be false statements from Wilson's roommates.  However, the final decision wouldn't have to do with football.

@Aggie81 If that was the case they could have done that a year ago!

@NoQNoSuperBowl IF he is charged, the line on the game will change. They don't change the line on a game until they have information.

Doubtful. Winston's attorney has spoken out this evening about the press conference. If they wanted to give him a chance to turn himself in, the attorney would be involved. Also, if Winston was now in custody, the attorney would be screaming to high heaven right now. What they could do is arrest him shortly before the press conference, though.

J63
J63

@carnage_2012 The argument would be to could be giving him a chance to turn himself in quietly before the circus that will ensue tomorrow.   If he's not in custody by morning, then nothing's gonna happen.

@historiskull Expendable ? Are you kidding ? More than 1/2 of the NFL teams are not satisfied with the play of their QBs  and are drooling at the prospect of drafting a player with Winston's talent.  Charge does not equal conviction - especially  in acquaintance rape cases where the conviction rate is in the low single digits..

Lizard_King
Lizard_King

I think Winston's moved on anyway.  He has what, two games left?  And, we won't know if he's an NFL star until he gets to the NFL.  No one thought much of Russell Wilson, and I'd argue that past and present performance is pretty much what the NFL scouts rely upon.  I also don't understand your "completely expendable" comment.  Expendable to whom?  He'll get drafted.  Also, charges are not a conviction.  They are very different.

@Cool @doublejtrain68 Girls that are having a consensual relationship with someone and then are told they have to leave because his girlfriend is coming to town.

But, if they were going to do that they most likely would not have called the conference the night before.

@southaustin @historiskull  i hope you are kidding me. I have no idea where you got your numbers from, its impossible to be in the single digits. D.A's esp. nowadays would not even take up the case. D.A's would rahter have a 100 percent conviction record then to get a not guility verdict. So me where you found this single digit number. At any RATE. He is a red shirt frosh, he can't enter into the nfl, for anther two years. He will be instantly kicked off the fsu team, he won't win the heismen.  Also NO NFL TEAM will pick him in the draft. You really have to be very diluted to think that. Winston is not a once in a type prospect, he is not a luck or rg3, or even wilson. He is a good college player.

keith.allen87
keith.allen87

@Lizard_King Winston is a redshirt freshman. He's not eligible for the NFL draft until after next season, as the NFL won't let a player register for the draft until they are at least 3 years removed from high school.

@Adolfis @TysonGarrett  You are an idiot!... I didn't help Heisman candidate Peter Warrick when he was suspended in 1999, or Tamarik Vanover when he was kicked off the team before the 93' national championship game! Or our best player last year Greg reed!

WordsOfNothing

First, Jameis can leave after next year; he's a redshirt freshman and not a true freshman. Second, he's not a "once in a type prospect?" Google "Jameis Winston NFL prospect". Several experts predict him as a first round pick. His size, arm strength, mobility and smart play just back that up. Lastly, as someone else pointed out, players who can play *will* play, regardless of charges. Search for Travis Johnson, another FSU player who was accused (and charged and acquitted in under 30 minutes by a jury) and still played in the NFL.

For what it's worth: I predict not only will he NOT be charged, I say she will be charged with filing a false report.

@JacobDockter No offense, but the list of guys that have been charged and yet drafted i so long, it'd take hours to type all the names up. Aaron Hernandez anyone? Warren Sapp? Rae Carruth? All of them were drafted high. So can he still be drafted if he gets charged and gets off (or even convicted with a slap on the wrist)? Hell yes he can.  Is it right? No. But it is what it is.

JacobDockter
JacobDockter

@keith.allen87 @Lizard_King its not as if they have no evidence to proceed in a rape case. To even get a charge there has to be a certain amount of evidence. I believe its something like a 98 percent conviction rate. So of course you maybe in that two percent of cases like in the duke lacross case where the women outright lied about it. However that is almost never the case.

JacobDockter
JacobDockter

@keith.allen87 @Lizard_King  Winston is not going into the NFL draft for one. He can't. He is only a frosh. He can't. Secondly, no one is going to draft this kid if he gets charged with rape. No one. He isn't a top once in a decade type prospect to begin with like Luck or to a lesser degree rg3 was.
