Sacramento Kings center DeMarcus Cousins made a comment on Tuesday that prompted some to believe he was taking a subtle jab at injured Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose, telling reporters who asked about his ankle injury that he’ll be out for the season and will get his own comeback commercial.

Sean Cunningham of KXTV ABC-TV had asked the 23-year-old Cousins if he would play on Friday against the Los Angeles Lakers and tweeted his response:

He joked “probably not, think I’ll be out rest of the season & I can get a comeback commercial”

Rose returned to the Bulls this season after missing all of last season because of a torn ACL in his left knee suffered in the first round of the 2011-12 playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers. His highly publicized rehab over the next year included a series of Adidas commercials. Rose came back this season, only to go down three weeks later with another injury, resulting in a second season-ending surgery, this time for a torn meniscus in his right knee.

Cousins apparently caught wind of the way his comment was perceived and tweeted on Wednesday that he was in no way “taking a shot” at Rose.

Despite being criticized throughout his career for questionable if not controversial behavior, Cousins is having his best season this year in Sacramento. He is currently averaging a career high 21.7 points, 10.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.2 blocks in 30 minutes per game for the 4-12 Kings.

Of course it's a jab at Rose.  That doesn't mean he has anything against Rose, it's just pointing out the bizarre way that shoe endorsements and professional sports intersect.

There are a lot of reasons to hate on Cousins.  He's a bad team mate, doesn't focus on defense at all, but this comment?  It doesn't really matter.  Even if Rose comes back 110% it's not like he's going to somehow embarrass Cousins any more than Cousins routinely embarrasses himself anyway.

You two are idiots.  Cousins certainly has had his issues, but he has been "clean" for a while now and is playing really really well.  And what he said wasn't remotely a shot at D Rose.  It is actually a fairly clever jab at how everything in sports is hyped beyond belief.  An entire show devoted to L James making "The Decision", several T Woods commercials that are beyond the pale, and this whole series about a player coming back from an injury.  It would be satire if they didn't mean it seriously.

Nothing wrong with what Cousins said, in the least.

And Cousins is such a class act...

Even if Rose never plays another game, he's accomplished more in his short career than Cousins will EVER accomplish in his bust of a career...

@Joe R2 Did you miss the part about Cousins averaging 22 points and 10 rebounds in just 30 minutes a game?
