Mike Tomlin shocked that his sideline ‘blunder’ perceived as intentional

At his Tuesday press conference, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin continued to deny that he intentionally stepped on to the field and into the path of Ravens returner Jacoby Jones, but did admit it was a mistake for which he’ll likely be disciplined.

Tomlin said it was “shocking” that his mistake was being perceived as intentional, but called the incident “embarrassing, inexcusable, illegal” and “a blunder.”

Tomlin, with his back to the play, moved out of the way, but not before Jones slowed his stride. He eventually was tackled from behind after a 73-yard return on Thanksgiving night.

The Ravens have provided a new twist to the scandal: a field-level video that shows Tomlin stepping closer to the field as Jones sprinted his direction. Audio accompanying the angle reveal Jones adamantly telling Ravens teammates he was obstructed by Tomlin.

Tomlin was not penalized on the play, though an official had to run around him on the sideline to keep up with Jones.

BEDARD: Why are NFL referees so inconsistent?

On Monday, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports quoted a text from Tomlin: “If anybody thinks I or anybody else would do this on purpose they are crazy.”

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported Sunday that Tomlin and the Steelers could face fines and possibly lose a draft pick in the wake of the incident, according to league sources.

Watch the replays taken from in front of Tomlin and focus on where his eyes are looking. His eyes are looking to the right just where the Raven is going to be. To believe that it was unintentional when you track Tomlin's eyes, is ludicrous. He did it intentionally...and his eyes tell the truth.

I don't think it was intentional and the over reaction is absolutely ridiculous.  Coaches like I don't know maybe hothead Harbaugh from the Ravens needs his behavior addressed by the NFL.  The Jets tripping a player didn't draw this much attention.  Blown way out of proportion and is absolutely ridiculous

Anyone that believes that it wasn't intentional; I have a great bridge in Brooklyn that I could sell you for a great price!!!!

It's painstakingly obvious that he saw him coming and reacted accordingly. There's nothing else to say about it.

He is shocked, shocked I tell you, that he was caught.

The video demonstrates he looks over his right shoulder as Jones approaches, waiting  -- it appears --for just the right (last) moment to step aside. His facial expression shows playful glee.  I like Mike Tomlin.  He squanders a great deal of credibility and professionalism on a cheap, cheating stunt. So sad...

Mike may have that ‘deer in the (owner) headlights’ thing going.

If Tomlin’s blunder was unintentional, his body language, before, during & after the incident, gave every indication otherwise.  If it ‘walks like a (deer),’ Mike.

He totally knew what he was doing. He is the head coach and he is wandering around with his back to the play??? Come on......

I don't think it was intentional but it was still a violation of the rules and a 15 yard penalty or even a TD should have been awarded to the Ravens for Tomlin's blunder. The refs missed this infraction and should be subject to league discipline.

Just lost a little respect for Mike.  Come on dude.  Be a man, own up to your business, take your slap on the wrist, and move on.

Not surprised by this guy at all.  In addition to having a rapist on their team, they also have just about the dumbest coach coaching them.  Gives new meaning to "Go Pit," you are the pitts.

Shocked? Really? What did he expect? At best he is irresponsible, at worst he has zero respect for the game. Seeing the footage for the end zone, it's the latter.

It took him what, 6 days to come up with this bull s---.  Dude did it on purpose, then got caught smiling from ear to ear afterwards.  If they don't throw the book at him, expect some assistant ball boy to make a game saving tackle for a playoff contender, very soon.

Does Tomlin think we will confuse him with Captain Renault?

@RK25 Really? The man has been in football his entire life and you think he didn't realize that he was in the field of play? Did you watch the replay? He was the only one standing that close to the field. He was closer to the field than the side judge that was running behind the runner. Tomlin could also be accused of interfering with the side judge as well.

@HarshRealities Like I said earlier . . . . .  I have a great bridge in Brooklyn that I can sell cheap! Since you fell for the "not intentional" story, you would fall for mine! LOL!!!
