Free-agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski has agreed to a one-year contract with the Red Sox, as first reported by Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

ESPN’s Buster Olney reported Pierzynski’s deal is worth $8.25 million, pending a physical.

Pierzynski, 37, hit .272 with 17 home runs and 70 RBI in 134 games last season for the Rangers.

The addition of Pierzynski could signal the Red Sox will not bring back catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia. The team had reportedly offered Saltalamacchia a two-year deal.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports recently reported the Marlins have made an offer to Saltalamacchia.

To have an owner (J. Henry) who loves baseball maybe as much as he loves money is truly a blessing.  All us fans should be so lucky.  AJ Pierzynski pick-up is such testament as he's one of MLB's best back-stops: hit, field, growl, likes winning and ring to show it.  Getting bit long-in-tooth but 1-yr. deal addresses.

This guy bashes the Red Sox during the playoffs and then they sign him? You have to be joking. As a Sox fan I hate this guy. As a baseball guy, I get the signing for one year.

I'll assume all the hatred of this guys ends as soon as he does something to help the team win; you can't hold a grudge forever I guess.

@KeysSteven Not for nothing and this isn't an attempt to start up a stupid fight thread, but when the Yankees Yankees make this kind of signing, you hear all sorts of "Buying a championship" comments...

Ah well, its going to be a good year for the rivalry coming up!
