USC hired Washington head coach Steve Sarkasian to become its next head football coach, the school announced Monday.

RealDawg.com first reported the move earlier in the day after several names, including Boise State head coach Chris Petersen, were linked to the job. Petersen eventually withdrew his name from consideration.

Sarkisian replaces Lane Kiffin, who was fired in September after a blowout loss to Arizona State. USC gave the interim job to assistant Ed Orgeron, who led the Trojans to a 6-2 record down the stretch.

Sarkisian, 39, had spent the last five seasons as the Huskies head coach, compiling a 34-29 record.

Sarkisian has previously worked at USC – first as a quarterbacks coach, then as offensive coordinator until taking the Washington job in 2009.

At Washington, he took over a program that went 0-12 in 2008. The Huskies had three straight 7-6 seasons leading into this season, when Washington finished 8-4. The team’s offense ranks eighth in the NCAA, and the Huskies won four of their final five games.

Pretty screwed up how they are doing Orgeron. I get Sarkisian has history with USC but they could have done so much better if they gave Orgeron the the job for 1 year and scanned the pool of head oaches next year. I see slight improvement over Kiffin but like Kiffin, this gig is too big for Sarkisian's briches.

Ed Orgeron should get a HC job somewhere, he just wasn't a Pat Haden guy. Will Sarkisian coach the Huskies in the bowl game? Probably not.

He helped UW crawl of out a dark time, we're all thankful for that.  We call him 7 Win Steve for a reason though, and his teams are always the same.  Weak on the road, full of mistakes.  Good luck Steve, you seem like a great guy, but you were gonna be fired next year anyway.

@Papi Del Negro..... Dont ask Besides...it's really difficult to erase those images of the mess his team was when he coached at Ole Miss.  Let it go people.  The guy is a buffoon.  He simply doesn't have the demeanor to be a coach at the major college level.  This isn't Animal House, people.  The head coach at USC is a CEO.  Orgeron doesn't fit the bill.

@Papi Del Negro..... Dont ask 6-2 but his two losses were to Notre Dame and UCLA...  He didn't deserve the job.  Simple as that.  No one OWED him anything.  He didn't earn the job.  8-0?  Sure.  We'll talk.

With his recruiting prowess, Florida should give him a ring rather than force the folks in Gainesville to endure another seasn under Muschump.

@Bobnipotent Seven wins at Washington isn't bad.  He should be able to do better with better recruits that Washington simply cannot cajole to come to U Dub.  If he can't get it done...he'll be bounced.
