The New York Yankees and free-agent second baseman Robinson Cano are still reportedly far apart in negotiations on a new contract. And Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan reported Monday that the Yankees are prepared to draw a hard-line in their attempts to bring Cano back.

“They are not going to go to $200 million,” one executive familiar with the Yankees’ plans told Passan. “Period.”

By Passan’s account, the Yankees and Cano are about $90 million apart on a possible agreement. Cano has softened earlier $300 million contract demands, according to Passan. But in the parties’  last meeting, he still asked for a nine-year, $252 million contract. The Yankees are still offering something in the neighborhood of seven years and $160 million. Passan reported that they have about $15 million of “wiggle room.”

Right now, it’s not believed that Cano has other offers on the table. The New York Mets met with Jay Z and other members of Cano’s team, but that session was informal. If they decide to get involved, the Seattle Mariners and Washington Nationals could pose the biggest threat to the Yankees to swipe away Cano, according to Passan.

Ellsbury will make 130K per game for the next 7 years...if that was my annual salary, I would do backflips...Cano's agent wants him to make 205K per game...I think it's time to find another past time since I'm priced out of the ballpark! This is borderline insanity!

No pro team should hire any player for more than 5 million and 20%. Of that should go to a retirement fund for the old school guys that built the league! There us NOBODY worth he contracts they are signing for! It only raises ticket prides for fans!

I think the Yankees are trying to prove that they are being tight-wads by low-balling Cano

J-z's agency is a joke.  They're new, and it's obvious that they're trying to make a big splash to lure future clients by getting some desperate team to give Cano a ridiculous contract.  Meanwhile, it's been reported that they're turning off GMs by trying to oversell Cano's marketability (the baseball version of Michael Jordan?  Really?).  GMs only care about what he can give their team on the field.  In the end, no one is going to bite on the kind of huge deal J-Z is looking for, and Cano will end up back with the Yankees at more or less what they've already put on the table.

Let the Angles or Mets kill their long term futures even more by signing this guy long term. Learn from the Cardinals, Rangers, As and Red Sox.

cano is a jovial guy, look at his picture. I think he should get whatever he wants.  they should give him $40 million a year and part ownership of the team. plus a personal slave and helicopter

Cano is just full of himself on and off the field .

Papi Del Negro..... Dont ask

Nor should they for an over 30 second baseman who is not a game changing franchise player. Maybe Yankee brass have wised up some and know better than to jump in and over pay for aging players anymore.

give him one day to take the 160 million or say you are no longer interested.........he would sign in a second

He has already "softened" on his 300 million demand, hahahah, yeah, because everybody was laughing at it, what a joke, nobody wants him at 200 million either.  Better take that 160 million before they pull that too, and dont even get me started on the stupidity of choosing Jayz for an agent.

If he wants anymore than 6 years I would let him walk and outside of Jeter this guy is my favorite player on the Yankees.  Enough with these long term deals.  You can sign 3-4 players at that money that all fit needs and only have to dish out 2-3 year deals in the process.  Let the Angels and Dodgers become the new Boston and New York of the past.  As much as I hate the Red Sox, they won because of great offseason moves.  Use that money to sign Beltran to a 3 year deal, resign Kuroda, bring in 2 cheap options like Bronson Arroyo to be your 4th or 5th starter, and sign a second baseman like Omar Infante.  All fit needs and you would not be on the hook for anymore abysmal deals.

For 300 million the first family can go on vacation next year. Who's with me?

For 300 million, we could send 75,000 students to community college next year. Who's with me?

Sorry Jay-Z, this is professional baseball, not the MTV Awards where everyone bows to your presence.   Overplayed his hand big time, I'd like to see Cano end up in Seattle, let's see how often you see Jay in the stands up there.

About time a team steps up and says no. If I were the Yankee owners and GM I would withdraw my offer and tell him to test the market. When he comes back with no offers I would then say, fine 5 years 80 million; take it or leave it.

Yanks should withdraw their off and put another on the table for 5 years, $100 M.

Hopefully the teams are all smart enough to see that those massive, 10-year contracts are all huge busts.  I don't care where Cano plays but I think the days of the A-Rod and Pujolz deals are done.

I'd love to see the Nats come in and swipe him away from the Yankees, but not for that kind of money.  I can only imagine he'd stay in NY for a comparable offer, given the advantage of being in a bigger market, so the Nats would really have to overpay to get him.

This is the worst decade to be a New Yorker. Knicks, Jets, Nets, Giants, Mets, Yankees, Rangers.. Can it get any worse? Yet this has been the best 10 years to be a Bostonian. New York has been cursed in Sports since September 11th,2001. It's True. Everybody in Sports fails & sucks at winning a Title with any connection to New York whether it's Buffalo,Syracuse or Northern New Jersey teams. The State in Sports has been cursed & the City in Sports has been cursed. 12 Teams with only 3 Title holders since 2000 while Boston has a quarter of those teams yet since 2001 won with as many Titles as all the teams in the NYC area combined. 21st Century Boston area rules!!!

Currently Cano only has his ability to play 2nd base above par with the other players in his position and thats probably his only value to the yankees but then after a few years he would start to decline and the yankees would be left with a 2nd baseman with little value.. look at cano he doesn't even have a charisma like jeter to sell those yankees merchandise.. at least jeter with his injuries and decline in performance will still have a good value to the yankees to back up his high salary because he sell yankees merchandise which in turn give some profit to the yanks plus the good publicity the yankees got because of his goody goody image that even after every jeters relationship with his ladies which as everyone knows is a long list ended it doesn't generate negative publicity. so i'm saying if the yankees are not stupid they won't give cano a long term contract with huge salary thou cano deserve a very lucrative short term contract atleast those can be justified by his positive stats on the field..

Robbie Cano will be 34 in year four of his contract.  Ball players hit a steep decline at the plate and on the field defensively from age 33 to 34.  So who ever signs him longer than that will get themselves a DH from year four on.  Pretty pricey since hes asking for $20 million plus a year.

If the Yankees end up signing him long term theyll have two DH types in year four of the contract with Brian McCann and Cano.

DanaBunner

The very most I would go for Cano is 7 years for $190M.  Going more than 7 years is foolish.  Likelihood of a 38 yo second baseman being worth $20M+ in his 8th year is extremely low.

@SteveBienefeld He has no marketability. He can't speak english. Although maybe he'd be good for the illegal alien crowd...

@William27 I'm pretty sure slavery is illegal in the United States.  I'm all for the other stuff for him though!!!  As long as they aren't giving up more than 92 percent ownership in the team...

@jackgorfin Hmm - I think I'm going to hire a mediocre rapper to represent me. You know, instead of ANYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD.

@Boston_Mass_Sports21stCentury Being a New Yorker that lost MANY comrades to 9/11 and shared the nation's pain during the Boston Marathon attack, I find your comment tasteless and reckless. Winning a World Series and TWO Super Bowls (both against New England!!!) while coming within inches of another World Series victory in the emotional 2001 Series shows a high level of competition and success in NY sports. Don't gloat, just bask in your city's success while you can.

@Boston_Mass_Sports21stCentury And the Yankees in 2009? Actually, I think it's really a bad time to be a Boston fan because now you guys are the Evil Empires and full of yourselves. We used to be kind to Bostonians but now I don't know. And don't give me this Boston strong bs just because of what happened. Tragedies are happening everywhere!

PAZSKY
PAZSKY

@Boston_Mass_Sports21stCentury Yeah, the Yankees being in the Playoffs 11 of the last 13 years and winning the World Series REALLY sucks for New York, huh? Let's not mention the Patriots "Spy Gate" or Manny and Papi's PED use either...just sayin'...

@Boston_Mass_Sports21stCentury Nice try but the reason the Knicks suck is because of our owner, Dolan. The Mets suck because of our owner, Wilpon. I guess you forget the NY Giants beat your Pats in 2 Super Bowls? 9-11 was a national tragedy and is not the reason NY sports are "cursed." Your statements are clueless and idiotic.

I couldn't agree more. I dont watch football all that much and I dont care for it. but I respect the league. Baseball should follow football.

I really want there to be a clause saying that no contract can be more than 3 years.
