British Olympic-medal winning diver Tom Daley reveals he’s bisexual
Tom Daley, a 19-year-old Brit who won a bronze medal in the 10-meter platform in his home country at last year’s Olympics, has revealed he is bisexual in a YouTube video posted on Monday.
Daley has more than 2.4 million Twitter followers and is one of Great Britain’s most famous athletes. After qualifying for the Beijing Olympics as a 14-year-old, Daley won the gold medal in the 10-meter platform at the 2009 world championships.
“In spring this year, my life changed massively when I met someone, and they make me feel so happy, so safe and everything just feels great,” Daley said. “That someone is a guy.”
Daley said he felt it was necessary to set the record straight after he said he was misquoted in a Daily Mirror story claiming he was not gay.
“I’m still Tom. I still want to win an Olympic gold medal in Rio 2016 for Great Britain. I’m still motivated as ever to do that,” Daley said. “In an ideal world I wouldn’t be doing this video — because it shouldn’t matter.”
Daley’s father died of cancer in 2010. He says in the clip that he feels he’d have his dad’s support, since his father always said, “as long as you are happy, I’m happy.”
