The wife of Alabama head coach Nick Saban said in an interview published Monday that he’s not going anywhere, dispelling rumors that popped up of his potential interest in coaching at Texas.

“We’re staying,” Terry Saban told The Wall Street Journal’s Sharon Terlep in an interview last week. “We’re not going anywhere.”

But she also lamented what she sees as a lack of appreciation for the job Saban has done as head coach. Right now, the No. 1 Crimson Tide is rolling toward a potential third consecutive national championship appearance as it prepares to take on rival No. 4 Auburn this weekend.

“You come to a crossroads and the expectations get so great, people get spoiled by success and there gets to be a lack of appreciation,” Terry Saban told the Journal. “We’re kind of there now.”

Earlier in November, Nick Saban’s agent reportedly told former Texas Regent Tom Hicks and current Regent Wallace Hall that the only job for which he’d leave Alabama was at Texas. Saban doused those rumors soon after, reaffirming his commitment to Alabama. Terry Saban called the reports “rumors with absolutely no foundation.”

The report in The Wall Street Journal paints Terry as a key part of the “tandem” involved in deciding Nick Saban’s coaching moves and contracts. One such moment came when he left Michigan State for LSU.

From the report:

After reports surfaced that Saban was talking with LSU, a team of Michigan State administrators led by Joel Ferguson, a trustee, went to Saban’s house one Saturday night. Saban denied being in talks with LSU—he said the school had simply reached out to him. But something struck the administrators as odd: Terry wasn’t home.

“Joel said, ‘Nick where’s Terry?’” said Underwood, who was in the group. “He said she was at the store. But then he asked again: “Nick, is Terry in Baton Rouge?’ And he said, ‘Yes, she’s there now.’” The next morning, Saban left for LSU.

If Coach Saban does leave, it won't be us fans I'll be sorry for. It will be the young, starry eyed recruits that based their entire college career upon the hopes of being coached by him. And if he can do that to a bunch of young kids then shame on him!

As an LSU fan, I feel that Nick Saban did nothing that any of us wouldn't have done when he left LSU.  He made a career move that he thought would be best for him and his family.  It didn't work out so he went to Alabama, which had a position open.I have no ill feelings toward him and wish him the best. No one can say he's not a heck of a coach; he's one of the best. Also, as far as lying, how many of us kept things quiet about a job change until everything was in place, meaning we had the job? He's in the spotlight and anything he says will be on the news the next day. If I were him and thinking of going to Texas, I wouldn't say anything either until the job was secure. Best of luck, Nick, and calm down a little before you have a heart attack!

The fans have no loyalty so why should the coach? They were trying to fire the Bear during a time when he only won 8 games one year.

Perhaps, if he had slightly more than the charisma and personality of a rattlesnake, people would appreciate him more.

Don't forget that the Sabans told LSU fans they weren't leaving either.

I'm sure there will be a firestorm of denials and angry responses to Mrs. Saban's comments but she is undoubtedly correct. Unfortunately for her and Nick, that is simply both human nature and part of the expectation that the football crazy South lays on their college coaches. It isn't that they are truly ungrateful but they have been spoiled by one of the greatest coaching runs in history (from a BCS standpoint). A 2 loss season is a disappointment for most big southern colleges but one which many have to bear routinely. Most fans are grateful but a % will only expect continued success just because they support it and will it and wish it so. Of course, all good things come to an end; bull markets are followed by bear ones, trees don't grow to the skies, etc.  What % of overly expectant fans does it take to make her pique more acceptable or accurate .. 20%, 30%, 40%? She ought to just keep it to herself and understand that big time coaching with big time salaries comes with big time and unrealistic demands and if you don't like it, then get out of the game.

Mrs. Saban just shut the hell up and go bake a cake.

1.  Whenever Saban wants to leave for "another challenge" (i.e., more money), I just wish he were honest about it.

2.  If Terry feels a lack of appreciation, I'm guessing that she didn't get that diamond tiara that Alabama promised her.

They literally erected a friggin' statue to him! How much more appreciative can you be?

Coach Saban obviously loves coaching at Alabama.  He without question loved coaching the young men at MSU and LSU as well.  However, he will eventually leave for another challenge.  That's what Nick does.  It's in his DNA and part of what makes him a great coach.  Ohio State fans should prepare themselves as well.  I miss the days of great coaches spending entire careers at a school, but those days are long gone.

She's offbase with the lack of appreciation nonsense. Bama fans know and appreciate what they have.

To say fans have a "lack of appreciation" is ridiculous.  Stop scheduling cream puffs and there won't be empty seats.

the house hunting trip to Austin was a nice touch. And I want to thank ESPN and rest for running with the leaks I gave them. Sorry Texas its just business

Remember the good old days when sports wives were seen and not heard?

I see her as just as much an egotistical liar as he is...

Maybe if her husband would show a little more appreciation to the people that come to games and the reporters that try to give the coaches a chance to relate to the fans then people would appreciate him more.  Instead he looks like Frankenstein staring at fire in interviews.

The woman is delusional if she things her husband deserves more than the 10's of millions of $ that Alabama throws at him and his staff . ...Appreciation ???  . . .She really has a high opinion of herself to think her comments have any weight what so ever !!    . let's make a deal if you ignore the critics we'll ignore you.

Nick Sabans's wife: "We're not leaving Louisiana." Nick Saban's wife: "We're not leaving Miami."

OK
OK

Mama Saban,

You'll go where you're told. You're a Dixie Girl. You're in it for the money.

mashley278

Saban gets crap for: MSU, LSU, Miami, Alabama. 4 jobs. Yet Pete Carroll had Jets, Pats, USC, Seahawks. Mack Brown has Tulane, North Carolina, Texas. Urban Meyer has Bowling Green, Utah, Florida, Ohio State. The list goes ON AND ON. If you look at the top head coaches in the country, they all have 4 or 5 stops as HC (except for Bob Stoops). Even Spurrier: Duke, Florida, Redskins, South Carolina. So Saban gets garbage because he didn't come out in a press conference and say "Yes I am leaving my current job at Miami, because well, the city sucks, the organization sucks, and I feel more comfortable in the college game"

doublejtrain68

Yes, they're staying...for now, or until Texas offers $10 million a year.

"Saban is disgusting" "Saban cheats!" "Saban is a liar!!!" "Saban oversigns!" "Saban has no loyalty!" - until your team sniffs around about getting him...then suddenly he's the greatest thing since Wonderbread.

@KelliSartainAndrews I love how he should feel ashamed that a bunch of kids based their college careers around a sport, instead of their education. Not to mention the fact that most of them could give a rip about the classes as long as they can get rich in the NFL. Yea, Nick is totally obligated to these hoodlums.

I smell an Auburn barner anxious to encourage Miss Terry to hate the fans.

@dandogwood Then tell reporters to stop asking questions. Or maybe you should shut the hell up.

@BrettRoar ^^^^^ I love guys like this, praying for Alabama to lose their coach. HAHAHAHAHA, yes, at 63, he's going to take off and leave. Ok. They have been saying this since he stepped on campus, how is that working out for you? Keep wishing.

mashley278
mashley278

@GTT Not really. If they end up going 11-2 this year, it will be a "disappointment" and I think that is what she means.

BrettRoar
BrettRoar

@GTT In all fairness to her, she spends her life in solitude.  His success comes with 100 hour work weeks and little time at home.  That tends to make spouses a little nuts.  I'm sure she enjoys the money but would probably like to have her husband their with her while she spends it.  LOL.

@dghamb54 EVERY, let me repeat ,EVERY school 's fans leave in a blowout one way or another. Tell those Big Ten or Pac 12 teams we would love to have them come down South. Big 12 never plays out of conference games against the SEC. Know why?

mashley278
mashley278

@Mike26 ^^^^ can someone call the whaaaambulance for you? I mean you're crying on every board about how much you hate the SEC. Fine, no one cares that you hate the SEC, take your crappy team and have them beat an SEC team in the championship game, problem solved, no more whining needed. On another note, even though I live in Seattle, I have no interest in crappy PAC12 teams, so guess what? I don't read articles about crappy PAC12 coach's wives...see how that works?

ebbette

@TrevorMariSwitzer That's his MO but that doesn't mean his wife doesn't have her own life, regardless of how she thinks. She's her own woman which those that like her appreciate and those that don't like her think is a lot like Nick. My FIL works for Skip Bertman so the word spreads a little faster when you "know" someone - like the boss. She bought 2 acres of land in a nice shopping area in 2012 in Baton Rouge. That should tell you her ties aren't broken with BR. The school erected a statue of him after only being there a few years. Nick is Nick and Terry is Terry.  The school will find out St Nick isn't really a saint soon enough.

Wesley11
Wesley11

@TrevorMariSwitzer The people that come to games and leave in the third quarter? The reporters that ask asinine questions?

Also, Frankenstein staring at fire would be unadulterated panic, which Saban rarely shows, least of all during interviews.

bucktownboy
bucktownboy

@doublejtrain68 Texas doesn't want him . He don't yuck it up with the alumnae like Mack Brown does. Why do you think he's still there?

ebbette
ebbette

@BrettRoar @GTT She still owns vacant land in a lucrative shopping area in Baton Rouge (Perkin's Rowe) she bought in 2012 plus their home in BR. She loves and spends her time in BR with many friends. She isn't "alone". We predict Texas or broadcasting is next for ole Nick.

@BrettRoar

And...you win most ignorant comment of the day. Life in solitude? Do you know ANYTHING about the woman and what she's involved in?

mashley278

@muser @mashley278 Yes, that is what matters you know. The personality of someone 98% of the planet will never meet. Yes, I care MUCH more about that than I do the number of rings he has...
