Catcher Brian McCann entered free agency as one of the market’s top targets. He is close to signing with the Yankees according to multiple reports Saturday.

UPDATE: Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reports the deal is done pending a physical.

Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports McCann — according to two major league sources — is not signing with the Rangers. Why? Another source said McCann is on the verge of agreeing to a long-term deal with the Yankees.

McCann’s agent, BB Abbott, told Grant he could not confirm that his client had agreed to terms with any team.

Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal followed Grant’s tweet with one of his own reporting that a source told him the Yankees remain in “serious” discussions with McCann, but that the two parties were not yet close on a deal.

Rosenthal soon followed with a tweet that the Yankees and McCann were close to agreeing on a five-year deal worth more than $80 million. He updated that that with McCann considering five years for $85 million plus a sixth-year vesting option.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports McCann’s deal will include a full no-trade clause.

Just as the facial hair was getting right,it has to go. By the way,why aren't Yankees allowed to have facial hair? I really can't remember. Also,i hope the pitchers can hold someone on first,b/c he can't throw them out. Shoot, for $17 mil.a yr. he should be able to run them down going to second.

Can he throw a ball to 2nd base yet. Couldn't do it at Turner Field.

The Yankees need him. Russell Martin is terrible.

Good player, but he needs to stop his baseball policeman bullcrap no one cares about. Play ball hit HRs and drive runs in and leave the silly cop act behind.

The good news is, the Baltimore Orioles probably don't have to worry about the Yankees giving Matt Wieters big money when he enters Free Agency next offseason.

Great!  Get this tool out of the NL so I don't have to watch this azz factory when they play the Reds.

Terrible Deal...Washed up and injury prone. He's going to be a below-average DH (when he plays)

@eddie767 Since the reign of George Steinbrenner, the Yankees have prohibited their players from wearing facial hair beyond mustaches, and from growing their hair long. In the 1970s, the shave-up-or-ship-out policy was part of an effort to keep the hairy, wild members of the  Bronx Zoo teams in check.

@rbeane1956   Yes they did.  They didn't sign McCann to a 37 yr deal for $870 million.

Hell, 5 yrs is a short contract for the Yanks!  And he won't be past his mid 30's when it's over!

I thought just like their players can't have facial hair, their contracts had to take them into their 40's.

@rbeane1956 Interesting statement considering they keep competing amongst the top teams.
