Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said head coach Jason Garrett will return as the team’s coach next year no matter how they finish this season, according to a report from Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Jones was asked if Garrett would be the team’s head coach next season.

“Yes,’’ Jones replied. “Yes.’’

Garrett is in his fourth season with the team and has an overall record of 26-24, including 5-5 this season, which is second in the dismal NFC East. Dallas is a half game behind the Eagles for the division lead.

The Cowboys haven’t made the playoffs in any of the years Garrett has been at the helm, and the team has just one playoff win in the last 17 years.

“It’s not that for Jason,’’ Jones said to the Dallas Morning News. “I’m disappointed we don’t have a better record, but he has got us in position to win the division and got a team here I firmly believe has the ability to be one of the better playing teams at the end.

“We’re positioned to get in the playoffs. We see logically how to get in the playoffs. We have that for all practical purposes in our control. Now, that’s a pretty good spot to be in after 10 games.

“A lot of this story is to be played out. It does not have a bearing on whether or not he will be our coach next year. It has no bearing on that.’’

Big surprise there; Garrett is that perfect sock puppet Jones has been seeking for over two decades.

Cowgirls fans' dream:

Jerry cutting Romo, firing Garret, then stepping down permanently as GM.

Cowgirls haters' dream:

Stay the course Jerry!

Jerry Jones is like the NFL version of Barack Obama. And the Cowboys are his Obamacare. Totally amateur!

Jerry Jones reminds me of the executives that "run" the Seattle Mariners.  Firing them would help the team.  But what person is going to fire himself?  Nobody,.

If you ask me, these Cowboys are spiraling out of control as long as Jerry Jones is the owner of that team.  He doesnt seem to care about football anymore.  But you guys wanna see "America's betting system", visit sportsbettingstar . com.

Garrett will continue to be the coach until Nick Saban, Jon Gruden or some other high profile coach becomes available. Then...."see 'ya!" The problem there, of course, is that all the high profile coaches (and their agents) know Jerra's history with Tom Landry, Jimmie Johnson and Bill Parcells. Which leaves Jerra in the same situation that Al Davis was in after the Mike Shanahan and Jon Gruden debacles. No successful coach would touch that job and he had to re-hire Art Shell.

But wait! Lane Kiffin's available and Monte is already in place as DC. If not, Leon Lett's on the Cowboy's staff....

Doesn't matter if the ghost of Vince Lombardi is the coach, they'll never win anything with Jones as an owner.

Feel bad for Cowboys fans to be saddled with such a tool for an owner. JJ is the biggest narcissist in all of sports. The irony is his ego has kept him from being successful on the field. Those early Super Bowl wins were mostly with an inherited team. It's true he has made a lot of money for the Jones family, I guess at the end of the day it is just business.

Great another 6 and 10 season and no playoffs

The problem for the Cowboys is that Jerry Jones is returning. As long as he insists on being GM they will never be competitive, except perhaps, in the NFL east. And we all know how pitiful that division is.

The greatest trick Jerry Jones ever played was convincing the world he is an idiot.

@Matthew53 As a Dallas fan for the better pat of 35 years, the only one I want is Jones gone as GM. I still have faith in Romo, and I believe Jason Garrett to be one of the better coaches in the league. He just needs more time at the helm to hone his craft as a coach. Something that is hard in this day and age of now, now, now mentality. Landry is looked at as one of the best coaches in league history and he didn't win at all for the first 5-6 years he was coach.

@MickHayes You're right.  Jerry is a tool and Cowboy fans, myself included, had better get used to the idea that we are now part of that sad-sack group of franchises like the Bengals, Cardinals, and other perennial also-rans.

That said, the early SB wins were most definitely NOT the result of an inherited team.  They were the result of Jimmy Johnson's personnel acumen.  The team Jones inherited from previous owner Bum Bright had many starting players that other teams didn't even want as backups after their release.  Tom Landry's last half decade was crippled by poor personnel decisions out of his control.  Hmmm.  Sounds familiar...
