Doyle Wolverton, a longtime girl’s basketball coach at Leake Academy in Madden, Miss., has resigned after being accused of biting a player in the face, according to local police.

Wolverton, who has been at the school since 1975, allegedly bit a player during a timeout in a Nov. 12 game, according to Leake County Sheriff Greg Waggoner. The player was taken to an emergency room and hospital employees called the sheriff’s office because the injury stemmed from an alleged assault.

Neither the school nor Wolverton would confirm that the coach had resigned, but a school official said that the school would have a statement on Tuesday.

“I have no comment on any of that,” Wolverton told The Clarion-Ledger on Monday. “It’s all still being … I can’t say anything right now.”

Toby Thaggard filed the police report on behalf of his daughter. It alleges that Wolverton grabbed the girl “by the shirt and then bit her on the right side of the face” after a bad play.

A deputy reportedly took pictures of the bite mark, and Waggoner said that the bite marks appeared to be “consistent with a human,” but he added that the family is declining to press charges.

Wolverton’s 1,245 career wins rank second all-time nationally in high school girls basketball.

Doyle....read no further. There can be no good with a man named "Doyle". Wayne either, never trust a man named "Wayne". Especially...especially if he has a moustache.

The coach belongs in jail if he really bit her.  Or a mental institution.

The family is declining to press charges???   The fact that the girl was taken to the hospital seems that there is some severity to what the coach did.  And the family is going to let the coach get away with this?  Unbelievable!

@Mike572 I think the seriousness of the bite was overplayed. I doubt there was any injury incurred and the hospital was a formality. If the family thought they could get money from this they would probably sue the school district.
