The New York Knicks are seeking a trade that would flip guard Iman Shumpert for Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo, the New York Daily News’ Frank Isola reported Sunday.

Isola reported that Rondo is the Knicks’ “primary target” in any deal involving Shumpert, whom they are looking to dump. On Monday, Celtics president Danny Ainge denied that he had discussed trading Rondo to any other team.

From Isola’s report:

Of course, the Knicks primary target is Rondo, Boston’s All Star point guard who is currently recovering from knee surgery. The Knicks have been trying to trade Shumpert, Raymond Felton and Amare Stoudemire in a complicated deal for Rondo but the rebuilding Celtics [have] yet to show much interest.

Unless the Celtics are blown away with an offer it’s hard to imagine Celtics GM Danny Ainge trading his best player, Rondo, to the rival Knicks. When Isiah Thomas was in charge of the Knicks he tried for months to acquire Kevin Garnett from Minnesota only to have then Timberwolves GM Kevin McHale trade Garnett to Ainge, McHale’s former Celtics teammate.

Isola also reported that Shumpert had a second left knee operation last summer — an operation the Knicks never made public. Back in September, Isola detailed that the Knicks also did not disclose that Amare Stoudemire underwent knee surgery this past summer.

According to Isola, the “feeling around the league” is that the Knicks will deal Shumpert soon. Other possible reported trade scenarios involve the Denver Nuggets and Sacramento Kings.

Shumpert is averaging 8.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per game this season.

I think this would have to involve more teams. Boston would most likely also want a first round draft pick and the Knicks have no picks to give. Felton Shump , Amare and a pick or 2 might convince Ainge to give Rondo up.

The problem for the Celtics is that are not going to get equal value for Rondo. If they made the trade they would only carry Stoudemire's contract for about 2 year 40 million vs 4 years and 60 million for Lee and Wallace. It is actually a long term move that favors Boston more than it does the Knicks.

Make the deal, and Melo will be crying about his future lack of touches throughout the games.

It's all about the comments.  This BS report has 37 comments, more than other articles.  So that's why they keep pumping out this junk.  We keep reading.

If the celtics take Amare I will be a celtics fan for life.

That'd be a great trade for the Celtics orthopedic surgeon... would be colossally stupid if you were trying to, you know, win basketball games.

Why would any team want to take on the Knicks garbage dump? Dolan and his cronies have dug themselves a deep, deep hole and it is going to cave in on them when Melo leaves at the end of the season.

Iman Shumpert for the #1 pick in the 2014 draft, 50 million dollars and Lebron, Wade and Kobe.

If you are going to trade your best player to a division rival then you have to be overpaid for him, not underpaid.

This kind of deal only works if there are more teams involved.  Because Boston will want more back than Iman freaking Shumpert.  A Stoudemire/Shumpert for Rondo/Wallace/Lee works math wise.  Boston has to take on Amare but dumps Gerald Wallace and Lee on the Knicks.  But that's still not enough if I'm the Celtics.  I want another young player on a cheap contract and/or draft picks or Im not doing it.

Shumpert for Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and David Robinson. Fair deal.

WTF The Knicks are insane if they think Iman Shumpert is worth Rondo. LOL

As a Pistons fan I was just thinking whether or not a package of Monroe and Jennings could get Rondo. Little did I know he could be had for Will Bynum instead! hhaha

Why are the Knicks aiming low?

Why not a multi-team deal where Shumpert goes to Miami for Lebron and Wade, Bosch goes to the Lakers who then send Kobe to the Knicks, Battier & Stoudamire & Felton end up in Minnesota who send KLove & Rubio to the Knicks.

If you're going to give up Iman Shumpert you've got to get real value back.

Lets see, as the Cetics GM,  I will take three players in poor health and soon to be out of the league plus a ton of  luxury tax contracts. For this I give you my All Star Point guard, who is the only reason our fans pay big money to fill my arena while they wait for my new team to gel.  As the Knicks GM, I get a genuine star player that cannot play until December at the earliest and may not return to form until next season. This player also is in need of being the "MAN"  and will definitely clash with the other, high paid star/stars on the team and mess with team chemistry.  You are right, this is a very complicated trade that involves the writer,  Brett Logiurato going into rehab soon.

I just talked to my sources here in Philly and the Sixers are eying a deal which involves trading Thaddeus Young for LeBron James in a complicated deal that may involve taking on the contracts of Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade as well.

Too funny. Knicks eye trade, and Boston eyes Knicks like they are nuts. If Dolan is behind this "report," then he truly has no concept of player value.

I would trade Shumpert for Durant and Westbrook.

Love how we keep hearing about these talk radio caller style trades that involve sending Shumpert for all star quality players in return. These rumors are so far fetched and ridiculous that Lamar Odem thinks its out of control.

How about get rid of two teams in the NYC area in every sport along with each teams garbage owners too. There are too many garbage teams in the NYC area in every sport. NYC area doesn't need two teams in every sport anymore. Fans are getting ripped off enough by a Jewish corrupt owner conspiracy with one team in every sport let alone by two teams in every sport in the NYC area

F--- the Knicks, Rangers,Nets & all of their team owners along with the Mets,Islanders & Jets team owners. I do not even like the Yankees team owners in this decade.

I may be called NY Old School Sports Fan but there is only two out of ten teams in the NYC area i'm a fan of. Even they have not done much since 2010. The 2010 to 2019 decade is going down as the worst sport team decade in NY history

Where do you reporters come up with this crap? This is easily the dumbest trade rumor of the past month. I can only go back that far because surely there must have been something equally idiotic in October.

Yes, let's trade a mediocre player with a bad knee, a fat point guard and the worst contract in the NBA for an elite point guard. Why wouldn't the Celtics leap at the opportunity to suck even more while absorbing more dead salary and not getting anything in return that gives them the potential for improvement?

Being a Knicks fan I don't want to trade Shumpert, but Rondo would solve a lot of their problems. Being a Knicks fan I also am used to a never ending stream of utterly baseless trade rumors that never come to pass......like this one. Not happening.

Nice try Knicks.  You've been trying to unload Amare for a bag of peanuts since last year.

If this is true that they are asking for this  it must be Shumpert a number one and a bag of money for Rondo . . . are they bing drinking at MSG these days ???

Including Felton in the trade? Meanwhile the Knicks had a very young PG named Jeremy Lin that everyone thought was a flash in the pan. The Knicks couldn't wait to get rid of him and resign an overweight, bull in a china shop named Felton. Felton was Woodson's kind of player and Melo could not play with a true point guard because he wanted the ball at all times. Now in his 3rd year in the league Lin is becoming a better player and averaging almost 17 points and 5 assists for the Rockets. Not to mention scoring 21 against his old team the Knicks a few days ago. Dolan is a true idiot.

And I'd like to win the Lottery. This shows again how the NBA is run mostly by idiots. Shumpert isn't one half the player Rondo is yet the Knicks expect the Celtics to trade Rondo for Shumpert. Idiots!

@Median2 why would the Celtics want a player with the worst contract in the entire NBA AND a loser Knicks fan?

@WilyCoyoteSuperGenius

When will garbage time end?  I get the feeling that Knicks ownership has been shortchanging loyal Knicks fans for decades. Do I imagine this, or were things different back in the Red Holzman days.  Why do I sense that NBA fans in Boston, Chicago, Indianapolis, Cleveland and grrrrr Miami...get their hearts broken less often by franchises that appear to be more savvy, less greedy, and less pigheaded than Knicks management.

spam5900
spam5900

@RobJohnson2 Jennings has zero value.  The Celtics could have signed him as a free agent, but didn't want him.  Monroe has some value, but not enough for Rondo.  You could get Shumpert for Monroe.  That could help both teams.

Yo NY Old School Sports Fan...do you mean Old School as in Nazi...not that many of them seem to have attended ANY school...your race baiting comments are way out of line, and you should be fined for unsportsmanlike conduct in this (or any) sports forum....second offense and you need to be kicked (punted) out onto eighth avenue, on your tail....preferably in traffic.

@kj4027 Couldn't agree with you more.  To satisfy a no-defense player in Melo, they got rid of a good point guard who would have improved in a Knick uniform, if the mgmt made a real effort to make it work.  Serves them right.  oh yeah, good luck with that Rondo thing...on crack!

spam5900
spam5900

@rottyboyy @WilyCoyoteSuperGenius The Knicks took a huge risk on Amare and it didn't pay off.  The Broncos took a big risk on Manning and it panned out.  The Saints took a big risk on Brees and it worked out.  It is hard to say what will happen, but you can't fault them for dreaming big.  It just didn't work out.

fakefake

@Ari1966 @kj4027 Why is Melo always to blame when something goes wrong on the Knicks.  Melo plays no defense?  I'm sorry but isn't it the PG every night going to the basket at will, scoring 20-30 pts. on Feltons matador defense.  Lin left to apease Melo?  Lin was on the bench his entire career til Melo begged that moron Antoni( I refuse to put the D in that name) to give him a shot...
