Rob Gronkowski apologized on Friday for his racially insensitive comments in a video that was posted by TMZ from a viewing party at a restaurant on Sunday.

“I feel bad, personally,” Gronkowski said, adding that he was sorry for offending anyone. “I feel bad. I talked to Joe [the man he mocked in the video], and he assured me he took no offense in any way. I know others did, and I apologize to those who took offense. He’s a good guy, and he’s a friend of mine. He’s a good dude.”

The Patriots tight end called Joe, who was wearing a Gronkowski jersey, “Leslie Chow,” referring to an Asian character in the movie The Hangover.

“They told me he could only cook fried rice,” Gronkowski said into a microphone at the party.

When asked on Friday if he was tired of the videos involving famous athletes going viral, Gronkowski said, “I’m here to talk only about the Panthers.”

The Patriots (7-2) play host to the Carolina Panthers (6-3) on Monday night. In three games this season, Gronkowski has 19 catches for 284 yards and a touchdown.

This is such BS. The people targeted by the anonymous video posters need to stop making public apologies.

The guy is his friend, you can joke around with your friend he wasn't offended, stop trying to see racism at every turn, geez, how can a racist white person befriend an asian person?  Gronk is not a racist....

He was in a public place making these racist comments.  I could only imagine the racist comments Gronk is making in private situations.  Just because the guy was his friend does not make it okay.  The ones that think its no big deal are the ones making the same racist comments and probably worse.  If he was at his house busting his friends chops it wouldn't be news, but if he is stupid enough to make these comments in public he is asking for everything he got.  He is actually very lucky he made these racist remarks about an asian man because it would've been much worse if the guy was black or latino.  I give props to the media for exposing this ignorant fool.

And the host at espn Brags that he uses the nword all day everyday--of course he's black so it's ok.

Oh come on, man! Really? Gronk and that guy were friends, for crying out loud. I'm black and my best white friends make off-color jokes in the same context as that. I just laugh it off. He was talking about his friend in reference to a character in a movie. There is crossing the line, but that was far from it. Whoever was offended by this needs to get some fun in their life and lighten up.

I think anyone who got offended should apologize to Gronk for blowing this out of proportion.  He busted his friend's chops, like any man does.  All you homos who got pissy can go suck it.

This is ridiculous people. No matter what you think about Gronk (a 24 year old man, who I strangely don't mind because he's a dork) is teasing his FRIEND who was laughing too.  Whoever is really criticizing him for it - or just using it as a chance to take a pot shot - get off your high  horse. Give-me-a-break.

Gronkowski is a cretin. His parents should have been sterilized.

I'd say that wasn't very patriotic of Gronk...(true patriots don't cheat BTW...or do they ?)

And if he had said his black "friend" could only fry chicken?

Listen, the definition of racism is more than just violence against a race, it also encompasses the ignorance that leads one to believe certain traits are inherent.; I.E., "fried rice".  However, cultural insensitivity is not in the same ballpark as beating a man for his skin tone.  This is why loose use of the term irks me, and I do appreciate the distinction made in the headline.  Nothing Gronkowski said here indicates he harbors ill will, so it is over.

Gronk is a victim of political correctness. Period.

It took me like two secs to mentally file this under "DGAF" in my cabinet.

That's outrageous and hateful. Now if he commented on how bad he drives, that would be on target.

Unlike the Incognito fiasco...this was handled by Gronk in a way that will end it. It is now over. See how easy it CAN be?

It's a stupid and racist thing to say.  Point that out is not making a "big deal" of it.  He apologized, as is appropriate, and we can move on.  The majority of comments seem to want to deny it's racist at all, which is disturbing.

I feel like a loser because I have nothing better to.do.than read and comment on this. It's a shame Gronk had to apologize for.this.

THAT was what he said?  Come on man.  There are more important things in the world (hopefully).

It's wrong to defame anyone. At any time. When your speech injures someone else you degrade yourself as well. And I'm glad that there is accountability for this type of behavior. I know some get annoyed and think this is 'politically correct b.s.' but it is not. There is no excuse to be rude.  Even if someone is rude to you first. It is not 'p.c.b.s.' to be courteous and respectful of others. It is courteous and respectful.

@Jeff63

Here's an idea; stop making ignorant remarks in public.

jefrok

He was in a bar holding a microphone talking to a group of people who were filming his comments.  I'm sure whoever posted the video was shocked enough to post it.  He wasn't just joking around with his friend.   He was stereotyping his asian friend to get a cheap laugh in a public location.  Stereotyping individuals of a minority group/ethnicity is racism.  If he made a joke that did not have any association to a race of people it wouldn't be wrong.  I know plenty of asians who don't eat or cook fried rice.  Its like saying all black people eat fried chicken and watermelon.  I grew up in Los Angeles and if I made a watermelon crack to many of my black friends, they would correct me and/or punch me.   He is public figure, thus he is held to a higher standard.  People look up to him and try to emulate him.  I'm sure he isn't a hateful and violent racist like a skinhead, but comments like this fuel the hatred and violence of people who are more ignorant than Gronk.

@jefrok You're part of the problem. I hope this observation offends you deeply.

@tushymcspankspank He was in public making these racist comments.  If he was in the privacy of his house its a different story, but he wasn't.  Your logic is exactly why they are idiots like Gronk.  He couldn't find a better way to tease his friend than using racist remarks.

@MorphySmith Got your arse kicked as a kid on a daily basis, right Morph?  This is ridiculous, and anyone but a clown like you knows it.

@Centennial Fortunately, Asians aren't as wimpified as liberals, so they're not offended by something so ridiculous.  Nice try, though, Rev. Sharpton.

tushymcspankspank

@me1 He shouldn't apologize for a thing - and I he knows it - but I agree, he is just putting it to bed.

SteveRowFla

@remosu37 The person to whom it was said thought it was funny.  It was neither stupid, nor racist, at least to those of us who haven't abdicated our personalities in favor of being liberal automatons.

doublejtrain68

@Rickapolis They're friends, dude. You've probably said something out of whack to one of your friends and they laughed about it. Add you to the list of people who need to lighten up.

jefrok

No offense taken especially from someone who obviously has no clue.  You have every right to your ignorant opinion.  All I got to say is that you are probably white and have never experienced racism first hand.

Rickapolis
Rickapolis

@doublejtrain68 @Rickapolis Not in public, doubletrain. The world has changed, and when you are irresponsible enough to say racist things in public then you have to accept the consequences. That's how a civilized society remains civilized.

doublejtrain68
doublejtrain68

@Rickapolis @doublejtrain68 You're both right and wrong. If someone didn't know Gronk and he made those statements, I would understand being offended, but if he was among friends that knew him and the other guy, no harm no foul.
