The St. Louis Cardinals and Colorado Rockies are expected to discuss a potential blockbuster trade involving Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki at this week’s MLB GM/owners’ meetings, Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan reported Sunday.

The National League champion Cardinals want to upgrade at shortstop after starting 25-year-old Pete Kozma there last season. In 404 at-bats at shortstop, Kozma batted just .220 with one homer, 35 RBIs and a .556 OPS.

ESPN.com’s Jim Bowden reported Sunday that the Cardinals are expected to dangle their surplus of young starting pitching for a “young, controllable shortstop.” The organization’s preference, according to Passan, is Tulowitzki, who hit .312 with 25 homers, 82 RBIs and a .931 OPS in 126 games last season.

The Rockies have previously said the 29-year-old Tulowitzki isn’t going anywhere, but their position is different privately, Passan reported:

While Rockies ownership has said publicly it has no intentions of trading Tulowitzki, privately it continues to weigh advantages of freeing itself from the final seven years and $134 million guaranteed remaining on his contract against the loss of a superstar and the public-relations hit of trading a beloved homegrown player.

Tulowitzki has a no-trade clause, meaning he would have to approve any potential trade. Passan also reported the Cardinals have inquired about the possibility of acquiring one of the Texas Rangers’ young shortstops — Elvis Andrus or Jurickson Profar.

I wouldn't make the trade for Tulo. I would do Andrus over Tulo any day of the week.

A decent alternative would be Peralta. You can get him for a shorter deal than Drew, and he may be cheaper seeing how he was suspended for 50 games.

As a Giants fan, please keep Tulo, Colorado. You don't need to improve your pitching - it's hittable even for our lousy offense! And he's hurt 1/3 to 1/2 the year anyway. 2 or 3 Cardinal fireballers might make colorado relevant.

Andrus, maybe, but the Cards are not in the habit of eating other teams bad contracts. If the wanted to spend $20MM a year on a guy who wasn't going to play half the time, they'd have kept Pujols. As a lifelong Cardinal, he have at least provided marketing/PR value. Tulo cannot provide any such upside by changing markets...

I say pull the trigger and make it happen.  It's not like Tulo is going anywhere with the Rockies and he'll be injured in the post season for the Cards and be on the bench for their next World Series.  Why anyone would invest in that fragile guy is beyond me.  The Rockies have never gotten a full season out of him.  And they can get some serious young talent out of it, pull that trigger yesterday.

Don't think this would work out favorably for either team... Andrus is only 25? I think and seems to have the personality that would fit in in the Cardinals clubhouse. Seems like a fun loving guy who would get along well with the young guys.  Profar I have heard great things about as well and wouldn't have to give up as much for him i assume.

Andrus is who they need. Great #2 hitter with SB speed and a Gold Glove at short. Good character

Any time a team can get out from underneath a foolish contract they should. Look how the Red Sox responded after their salary dump. 7 years is a long time and all it takes is one seemingly insignificant injury and the Rockies are stuck paying out huge sums of money for a long time. I am surprised the Cards are willing to take on such a huge contract.

Not gonna happen, maybe Andrus, not Tulo or Profar.

@the_clay_bird Think again.  It'd take a boatload to get profar, he's younger and far cheaper.

@Jim30 I could see Profar.  Not Tulo, though.  At least--if the Rockies trade Tulo, they're idiots.

@jb22 @the_clay_bird He's also unproven. Tulo would cost far more -- two or three ML ready prospects/players along the lines of Miller, Rosenthal, Martinez or Adams. Unless, the Rockies eat some of that $20MM per season, though, I wouldn't give up more that one of that lot...
