Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin has emerged as the top target for USC to fill its vacant head coaching job, according to Scott Wolf of the Los Angeles Daily News.

The school is looking to replace Lane Kiffin, who was fired in September after a 62-41 road loss to Arizona State.
The school named defensive coach Ed Orgeron as the interim coach. According to the report, the school hopes to hire its next coach sometime next month.

Sumlin has been at A&M for the past two seasons and makes $3.1 million a season.

TV analyst Jon Gruden, Boise State coach Chris Petersen, Vanderbilt coach James Franklin and Denver Broncos interim coach Jack Del Rio have been mentioned as possible successors to Kiffin.

More from the Daily News:

Sumlin, who has won 30 games the past 2 1/2 seasons at Houston and Texas A&M, is also mentioned as a possible candidate at Texas and is one of the hottest names in coaching. There could be a bidding war after the season and he might even draw interest from NFL teams.

USC can get sumlin easily if they put up enough money--at least $5-$6 million will do the deal

Am pretty sure that Sumlin will get an offer from the Houston Texans and Texas Longhorns. He is about to be very very rich. The guy can recruit, has a great offensive mind and knows how to run a program.

Oh the irony, myself having grown up in College Station and left to attend USC. A&M is a right wing reactionary sewer - I'm not surprised Sumlin is looking to get out. Personally I'd rather see someone else at USC than the overrated Sumlin. I still think if Orgeron is able to pull off wins against Stanford and especially UCLA, Haden would have to reconsider retaining him as HC permanently.

Sumlin might work out at USC.  He has the knack for bringing in QBs and developing them into all stars, something Lame Kiffin failed at horribly.  With the 5 star QB recruits that Sumlin could bring in, he has the potential to bring USC back to respectability.  Many forget that before Pete Carroll, USC was a middle tier program.  Many thought that Carroll wasn't the right guy for USC either.  My problem with Sumlin is that his defenses have never been that good and in order to win BCS championships, you need to play some defense.

Sumlin should go to Grambling as their diversity hire and rebuild that dump program for honor.

Texas A&M is not racist at all. Not the institution, nor the students that attend school there. I grew up traveling and living around the world and the USA. My Four years at Texas A&M were among the most comfortable, inclusive years of my life.

Sumlin is an average coach who benefited by two great QB's who made Sumlin. Sumlin isn't that smart nor is he a good coach.  Keenum and Manqiel made Sumlin as did Briles and Sherman.  Give is a break.

I would rather be locked up in Texas than loose in California.

14% state income tax in Cal 0 in Texas. He stays.

Look, everybody knows Sumlin was using A&M as a stepping stone. For those of you not familiar with Texas A&M, it is a right wing reactionary school that many people in the state see as a cult. After the Auburn loss I had aggie friends of mine calling for A&M to fire Sumlin. I am not saying that race played a major role in this odd behavior, it played a little. Sumlin wants out, he made his stock rise, time to move on.

Sumlin took off with Brile's Houston program and great QB not Sumlins program. Sumlin inherited a  strong A&M program and the Heisman QB in Manziel.  Sumlin has enjoyed the success of two other coaches and made his name off of that.  Sumlin is an average coach who had good luck and 2 award winning QB's.  Watch and learn.

Laugh out (really) loud at anyone listening to what Scott Wolf has to say. He's the least informed beat writer in the history of beats. Seriously, you'd be better off reading Bleacher Report to get "inside" information.

That said, I do think Sumlin would be an excellent hire. He could really be dynamic in LA with all that history and all those resources.

$500M for a stadium renovation... I can't imagine the Aggies will be out bid. We are talking Saban, Mac Brown, kind of money!

@6marK6 Sumlin is an overrated coach and the next team that hires him will know it soon enough. He rode Johnny Football like a pack mule last season when they all caught lightning in a bottle.

His "defense" is an utter disgrace and his offense has been good but not as great as last year. The bloom is off the Sumlin rose and for good reason. If I were USC, I'd run from him and never look back.

@6marK6 Well, I'm pretty sure that Kevin won't accept the Texas Longhorn offer or UCS's offer when A&M will certainly match or exceed their offer...  ;)  Besides, why the Hell would Sumlin go to USC or Texas when has already has Texas A&M who is not only in the SEC (where all the best recruits are going to), but he is also a year or two from competing a national title? Oh, USC's and Texas's prestige?? Well forget prestige when USC and Texas hasn't done anything in ages, and when he's already with a team with contention...

@Helzyeah1 ..Kevin's not  looking to get out. Kevin spent his life in Texas...What makes you think he would appreciate California's state tax and all of you screaming liberals who think it is the Federal governments business to get our personal business? Isn't California the state who actually made it illegal to store rain water? Seriously? Oh, and I remember the woman in Cali who got arrest for having a garden in HER front lawn! You see, they know better than to try to pull that crap over here in Texas. ;)  Cause, if they ever passed those laws in Texas, people WILL BE getting shot...a lot of them...A rebellion would happen in Texas. That's a promise....and they know it....That's why they won't pass these stupid laws in Texas, even if the dems get control of Texas.  ;)  They know that if they get stupid, we WILL correct them.  ;)  That's why Kevin is staying. Screw Cali and their weakling citizens who would rather beg for mercy (& pray for cops to show up) than to fight, instead.

@joeshine730 A few questions.  Who is Manqiel?   How do you know that Kevin Sumlin is not smart?   How do you know that he is not a good coach?    Seems to me like you are making guesses.

@ElvisHitler You are kidding, right?  A&M and Racism are totally opposite... I'm neither white nor an american, but every single person I interacted with in College Station was super friendly, helpful and caring... not to mention that I was invited to every single party and I never felt outcasted. It is a school with great traditions, values and it promotes equal opportunity culture. You've clearly never been to A&M.

telerecruiting1

@WHO*IS*ESPN Really??? Put your head on and look the records and Sumlin's in the tough SEC with a win over the nat'l champs. "Token minority" (your words) with a winning record versus a hand-picked "majority" (I suppose is the counter) with a history of failure. How many wins has he had at USC against ranked opponents? ZERO! What a meritocracy! The majority has far more propped up failures than any of the "minorities". No worries, you Boy Kiffiin will get another shot.

@RayGunn Do you know what property taxes are? If you lived in Texas you would. It is what compensates for having no sales tax.

jdane
jdane

@RayGunn Yup.  And that's why Texas has to rely on federal subsidies as much as it does.   Listen, we're all in agreement:   once you pay your share of the national debt (which you and states like you have incurred), you can leave with our blessing.

mystafugee
mystafugee

@RayGunn What a dumb argument, if he's going to leave Texas A&M it's not about the money as much as it's about the program.  It's USC the traditional top dog not the #3 team in a division.

doghockey
doghockey

@RayGunn He may stay but it will not be based on his tax bill.  Still don't get why you guys trot out that old argument.   Although I guess that it easier when you make up the numbers.   14% is wrong.

@6marK6 - I believe you mean State Income Tax.  We DEFINITELY have a sales tax.

ShawnS
ShawnS

@jdane - The State of TX pays more in than it gets back and the numbers are skewed because of military bases, the border with Mexico, and the Gulf Coast, all of which are federal financial obligations, not Texans on the federal teat.  You can't call illegal immigrants Texans, force us to pay for their food, school, and healthcare, and then claim that they are Texans relying on federal aid.  They are forced expenditures that the state wouldn't have if it weren't on the border with Mexico!  If you are looking to make a point, make one that's a bit more factual!

DerekSugimura
DerekSugimura

@doghockey @RayGunn It's 13.3%; not exactly far from 14%.  Cost of living is a bigger factor, as is the fact that Sumlin doesn't want to raise his family in a big city.

Seigga
Seigga

@JeffBockert @jhsweeney I have to find that beach you keep referring to... as if all the coaches use proximity to beaches as the most important factor in their decision making... FAIL!

@DerekSugimura Still wrong, but if you want to keep tossing numbers at the wall and pretending that you know Kevin Sumliln go ahead.  It's fun to watch.
