Tiki Barber: Every team wants a guy like Richie Incognito

Former Giants running back Tiki Barber is known for his outspoken personality, and on Tuesday’s edition of The O’Reilly Factor on the Fox News channel, he weighed in on the Richie Incognito bullying issue.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a thug culture,” Barber said of NFL locker rooms. “It exists in some corners of the National Football League. And look, Richie Incognito is needed on some teams. They need that attitude.”

Barber, who works as a host on CBS Sports Radio, added that he wouldn’t hire Incognito if he was running a team, but that “every team wants a guy like that.”

SI WIRE: Incognito trying to “weather the storm”

Barber’s comments come after a report in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel said Dolphins coaches asked Incognito to “toughen up” Jonathan Martin after he missed two days of voluntary OTAs.

When O’Reilly again asked Barber, a three-time Pro Bowler who played 10 NFL seasons, about the league’s “thug culture,” Barber said that he’s sure he played with former gang members who were able to escape that life because of pro football.

“I don’t know [how many], but I guarantee you I played with at least a couple, and they found their way out of that culture by being in the National Football League,” Barber said. “It was their vehicle to get out of wherever they were.”

Tiki nailed it on the head. You can name a sport and there's been a guy to fit this description from Lyle Alzado to Dennis Rodman teams will use their "talents" until they are no longer required or the team loses control of the individual.

Barber makes another grab for the spotlight in an attempt to increase his profile.

Richie Incognito's worthless, but these comments mean so much coming from Tiki Barber, the Adrian Peterson Father With Multiple Children and Ladies, Too of his generation.

The same Tiki Barber who attacked Eli Manning as "weak" and "laughable" and left the Giants...who then went on to win the Super Bowl WITH Manning and WITHOUT Barber?

Barber is a moron.  Every team does not want that type of poison in the locker room.  Tony Dungy said it best:  It happened because the leadership allowed it.  Things like this don't happen if you have effective leadership.  Incognito should be banned from the NFL.  Barber should be banned from speaking in public.

"Barber added that he wouldn’t hire Incognito if he was running a team, but that “every team wants a guy like that.”  Good old Tiki...always making perfect sense.  Is there any wonder his career as a sports analyst tanked?

If Tiki Barber had expressed the opposite sentiment, would those who posted negatively about Tiki based on their personal opinion of him disqualified his comments? I suspect not.

Knowing a few details about what goes on behind the scenes brings all the arm-chair QB's out of the closet. Folks, I have news for you, if you saw what happened in the kitchen of your favorite restaurants you would probably never eat there again, but since you don't see inside the kitchen, it is still your favorite restaurant. Ignorance is bliss, go back to what you were doing before you heard about this yawner of a story.

Martin laughingly passes around the VM he later leaks to the press. Interesting.... Common practice in NFL for rookies to pony up for vets meals and trips. Interesting.... The guy takes summer business seminars at Harvard. Interesting.... Has unprecedented support from other current NFL players. Interesting... Moralists and PC police ridiculously equating lockerrooms to their own pathetic cubicle jungles. Interesting.... Reality is it should have been handled in house, not fed to the largely incompetent media vultures.

"Every team needs an Incognito" just like every pregnant wife needs a husband (now "ex-husband") like Tiki Barber.

Coming from gutter slime, I am sure that is quite some praise.

Considering Incognito has been kicked off every team from college to pro, it seems about right.

Tiki the moral paragon, who was (by all reports) hated by his own teammates.

Mr. Credibility!

It's funny he said something like this, because I always suspected he was a bully/poison in the locker room.  Notice what happened the year after he left the Giants?  They won a Super Bowl.

Tiki came off well in that interview. Most people can't hang with O'Reilly's argumentative, matter of fact approach.

The OTA was voluntary, so he was not required to go and should have been left alone.

Tiki,  Mr. know-it-all, Barber  has spoken .. Listen to what he has said - for he knows everything ..if ya don't believe me , ask him ....Typical UVA , know-it-all , athlete...  Remember , Eli Manning  doesn't have any leadership qualities ..

He's just telling the truth.  Two things will come out of this situation - Incognito will get a spot on a better team, and probably make more money, and Martin will never play another snap in the NFL.  Every player and employee of every NFL team, along with every member of the sports media, despises Martin right now, because he doesn't fit the 'tough guy' profile that everyone expects of a professional football player.  Nothing will change as a result of this incident, other than the end of Martin's career.

TicTac Barber is the epitome of old athletes that just completely, lack of better word, suck at commentating.  If he was a mailman, teacher, lawyer etc etc...  for ten years, no one in their right mind would give a $&%# what that dumb%^ has to say.

Well, he was saying this on Fox News, so are we really surprised...

Two timing Tiki should keep his comments to himself.  He continues to embarrass himself every time he opens his mouth.

Isn't this the same guy who said Eli is a better QB than Peyton?

@kb4freedom  I'm sorry, but that makes zero sense freedom fighter. You say ignorance is bliss,  but I'm not certain you understand the sentiment. So just because one isn't always able to see what goes on behind closed doors they shouldn't concern themselves? Just because people approve of the end product doesn't mean they'll approve of the process. It's that exact unconcious attitude you just displayed behind so many problems today. "Well you didn't care about it when you didn't know, so why care now?"....jeez, what a worm...

@bornindetroit 15k.  Interesting.  He was being singled out and ganged up on and it didn't stop when he was no longer a rookie.  Interesting.  You're a moron.  interesting.

@decredico The NFL?  It might be more common in football, but it seems like these kinds of attitudes are pretty widespread.  He didn't fit in.  He was weak.  He deserved it.  It shouldn't bother him that they were ganging up on him and verbally abusing him every day.  They were just having fun. Trying to toughen him up.

@Callaway Did you notice that Barber is NOT an NFL team? Every team wants one, but HE wouldn't. No contradiction at all.
