Saints place linebacker Jonathan Vilma on injured reserve

The New Orleans Saints placed linebacker Jonathan Vilma on injured reserve, ending his season, the team announced.

Vilma, 31, started the season on the designated to return from injured reserve list and was activated the day before the Saints lost 27-20 to the New York Jets.  He played 12 snaps and made one tackle.

Vilma has had issues with his knees, undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in August, his fourth procedure on the knee in the past two years.

He took a $3.8 million pay cut in his base salary before the season, making a 2013 base salary of $1 million. His contract ends after this year.

Vilma has started 121 of 125 games in his career, but hasn’t played a full 16-game season since 2010.
