The 49ers will release CB Nnamdi Asomugha, according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN..

The veteran Asomugha joined the 49ers this season after spending the previous two years with the Eagles, who released him at the end of last season and still owe $4 million on his original contract with the team.

Cornerback Eric Wright is expected to join the team soon from the non-football injury list, prompting the team’s release of Asomugha. The three-time Pro Bowl cornerback will go on waivers after being released.

KING: Gary Kubiak, John Fox situations sadly dominate NFL Week 9

Could fit in nicely in navy and Orange  for the right price.

Raiders need him badly.

Never should have left the Raiders to run down FA money.  The grass is greener.

I thought he was the best in the league three years ago. What happened?

Given the Vikings injury situation and position in the waiver pecking order, they ought to snap him up...although, @ 1-7, does it really matter at this point?  Vikings will be in great shape come springtime to draft it's 'quarterback of the future', as there will be several great prospects available.

what in the world happened to this guy?  A couple of years ago, he was supposed to be the best...so much better than Champ.  And now he doesn't even have a job??

Nnamdi, come back to Oakland where you're missed and needed. DJ Hayden is not ready for prime time. You were a mosnter for Silver n Black. Come home.

We ve been there done that.. While he was a true cover corner and arguably top 3 while he was with the Raiders, time has caught up with him. His skills are diminished to a point where he is a liability anymore. Oakland has enough liabilities in the secondary, dont need another one. It disgusts me as a Raider fan to admit praise to a Broncos player but it really makes you appreciate the talents of Champ Bailey and how long he has been able to remain elite though injuries and age are beginning to factor in. Long story short, think its time to hang em up Nnamdi..

@GTT

got exposed as in deep decline in philly, couldn't run with guys, reluctant to tackle, ball skills HORRIBLE. Continued in SF, unemployed.

@GTT Got moved to a system in Philly that didn't fit his skills well and he is just getting older like all football players do.

@gmag39 Yeah given the Vikes injury situation why haven't they re-signed Antoine Winfield? He seems to want to come back.

@mbroncofan It is bizarre. The biggest disappearing act I can remember for a cornerback. I suppose going from All-Pro to bubble player after signing a fat contract isn't unheard of, but it's not like it was his first fat contract. His last contract with the Raiders had already set him up for life.

@donald5 @GTT or perhaps he was never that good to begin with. Nobody really had to throw against the Raiders in his day. He locked down ace receivers?  Big deal when teams just ran the clock out against you because your team is terrible. Not to mention, they were so awful why bother throwing his way when the rest of the secondary was horrible.
