Although his name has been floated around in trade rumors for the past year, 23-year-old slugger Giancarlo Stanton is “not available” on the trade market, Miami Marlins general manager Dan Jennings told ESPN’s Jim Bowden on Saturday.

Jennings reiterated the Stanton will be the Marlins’ starting right fielder on Opening Day 2014, adding that the organization is “building around him.”

Speculation about Miami dealing Stanton — who has 117 home runs, a .265 average and a .889 OPS in his first four seasons — has swirled since the Marlins’ fire sale last offseason with their salary dump trade of Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson and Mark Buehrle.

The Rangers, Pirates and Phillies are among the many teams that have been linked to Stanton.

Jennings also said that Miami is seeking upgrades at third base and catcher, and has discussed the possibility of trading for Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks and Angels outfielder Mark Trumbo.

He might as well be because until that sorry sack of you know what of an owner is still allowed to own the Marlins, any worthwhile player in the organization will eventually become another team's mvp and enjoy success. I keep hpoing for Selig to disappear and a new commissioner come in and say enough is enough and take this team away from this toad Loria. Its a damn shame a team in the middle of a large latino population cannot peak interest even with two world series in 20 years because of an owner that only cares of fattening his pockets and nothing about the product in the long term.

Meh.  You can't believe anything out of any Owner or GM in MLB - but the Marlins "brain trust" make the other owners/GMS look like Honest Abe.  Luria is a pathological liar - and has upset former players, former fans, and former employees like it was a game.  Hopefully Stanton tells them that he's never signing a long term deal in Florida - and he's going to test the FA waters when he's earned that right.
