The Boston Red Sox exercised the $13 million option for left-handed pitcher Jon Lester for next season, the team announced Friday.

Lester just finished the final season of a five-year $30 million contract that had a team option for the 2014 season. The team had until midnight Saturday night to pick up the option.

Lester, 29, went 15-8 with a 3.75 ERA and 177 strikeouts, pitching  213.1 innings in 33 starts this past season.

Great deal for both sides.

Coming into 2013 I was hoping Lester would pitch well again. I really had no idea what you would get from him seeing how he was not that good for the past year and few months. During the 2013 season I still did not believe he would regain his old form, but after the all-star break and into the playoffs he looked like the Lester of old.

Considering what pitchers are going for these days; this is a steal for a proven starter than can pitch 7 innings or more per start.

Lets lock this guy up so he reiters as a Sox. He has done enough during his tenure with the Sox to warrant it.

Good deal, now let's get the extension done before the break so it's not a distraction

Smart move Sox!  Just like the moves in the off season last year.  GO RED SOX!!  Now, do what you can to keep all the other pieces in place for next year.

After the way he pitched in the playoffs and World Series this year, totally worth it.
