Martin Truex Jr. officially driving for Furniture Row Racing in 2014
Martin Truex Jr.’s long-rumored move to Furniture Row Racing was officially announced by the team on Friday at Texas Motor Speedway.
Truex will complete his fourth season driving for Michael Waltrip Racing and join his new team in 2014. He previously raced five years for DEI/Chip Ganassi Racking.
Truex said at a press conference that he’s excited to drive the number 78 Chevrolet when Kurt Busch leaves the FRR team in 2014.
“I know it’s been a big secret and everyone’s really shocked,” Truex joked. “In all seriousness it’s a big deal for me. Excited to drive with Joe [Garone, GM of FRR] and Barney [Visser, owner]. I’m impressed with their organization, what they’ve done this year. Anyone in this garage area will tell you how impressed they are to see them progress.
“It’s an opportunity to go to a winning race car, start fresh, and do things I want to do,” Truex said. “It’s only the second time I’ve changed teams. It’s very difficult. I really enjoyed my four years at Michael Waltrip Racing, wouldn’t change anything there. But I felt it was time for change.”
Truex was the hot topic of more than Silly Season speculation in September when NASCAR officials removed him from the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup and replaced him after MWR was ruled to have manipulated the results of the Sept. 7 race at Richmond. The scandal led to Truex’s primary sponsor, NAPA, ending its contract with MWR and leaving Truex without a ride in 2014.
