Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has signed a one-year, $12 million deal with the Yankees, the team announced on Friday.

Jeter, 39, played in only 17 games last season as he dealt with a series of setbacks following the broken ankle he suffered in Game 1 of the 2012 ALCS. Jeter, who’ll be entering his 20th Major League season, is a career .312 hitter with 256 home runs and 1,261 RBIs.

His 3,316 career hits are 10th all-time, just three behind Paul Molitor for ninth place and 119 behind Cap Anson, who is sixth.

This will be his last year, of course. The Yankees needed a way to begin to show him their appreciation for a great career, and there will be a farewell tour like Mariano's. I just hope he stays healthy so he can play the whole season.

It's unfortunate that Jeter has chosen this way to end a great career. Nothing good can come from hanging around too long.

I agree that his best days are behind him, but what a great influence in the clubhouse, and for the younger kids (or even players coming from other franchises) coming up.  I'm not a Yankee fan at all, but if you love the game it's hard not to be a Derek Jeter fan.

Sure, he's a class act, but his career was over several years ago.  He's only staining his own legacy and holding back someone else who waiting for his chance.  Jeter is done.

Jeter is a class act and glad the Yankees gave him this extra bit in what might be his last year. Trust me they will make way more filling up the stadium during his farewell tour. At least they have one star that won't turn around and sue them.

Hope we get one more series at Dodger Stadium like last year.

Please - $12M for the NYY is like $1.5M for KC.  But if he's healthy enough to play and stinks up the joint, can't wait to see if they have the stones to sit him down.

he should be embarrassed for getting so much

there are starving children all over the world. who don't have a dollar to their name

and he is wearing clothes made by slave labor

he should be playing for $4million after missing much of this year while getting paid over $15million which is more than entire families make in their lifetime !

shame on you Derek !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A free $12 million on his way out the door for a injury prone guy with limited defensive range and declined batting skills.  Were the yankees trying to outbid themselves for Jeter

@joe6647 NO! We just have class and money that we spend. Most other teams don't have class and don't spend the money that they DO have. They keep it in their pockets.
