The National Football League Players Association says that Washington Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather is sorry for his comments made earlier in the week saying that to continue playing, he would have to resort to taking out player’s knees.

After Meriweather was suspended for one game without pay for illegal hits made against the Chicago Bears, he said:

“I guess I just got to take people’s knees out. That’s the only way. I would hate to end a guy’s career over a rule, but I guess it’s better other people than me getting suspended for longer. You just have to go low now, man. You’ve got to end people’s careers. You got to tear people’s ACLs and mess up people’s knees. You can’t hit them high anymore.”

BANKS: The NFL’s Nonsense Problem

NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith said that Meriweather understands that what he said was wrong.

“I spoke to Brandon. He is passionate about the game, and I know he is sorry for what he said,” Smith said in his statement, via Pro Football Talk. “He is concentrating on helping his team win the rest of the season. Brandon knows that all players have a responsibility to each other and to play within the rules of the game.”

Brandon is a punk, These same players who complain about the league turning into flag football have no problems whatsoever making text book tackles on their teams player durring practice. They only choose to make reckless tackles in hopes of making a highlight reel. The worse case would be they make those reckless tackles in attempt to remove competing players from games in which case they may want to speak to the Saints Headcoach before continuing to play with such disregaurd.

But of course while he was quite willing to flap his yap originally, he didn't have the class or stones to make the apology himself, which results in it meaning NOTHING. Gutless, classless, what a shock.

It is interesting, I took no offense to what Brandon said. Maybe he simply said it wrong. Had he said, "The rules and the fines really are forcing us to hit low. With the rules they way they are, the league is saying concussions are bad, ACLs tears and potential career ending injuries are ok. Before long there will be an area less in size that the average MLB strike zone where we can hit people."

So, now he apologizes and we're supposed to forget or ignore his stupidity and ignorance. What? Poor baby he made a boo-boo. Kiss my arse! He should be penalized in some way. No matter what a person does, sorry just don't make it ok! I hope a player when playing him, they remember how he wanted to injure another player!You know why, do I have to spell it out? Didn't think so. GO BILLS!!

What this moron does not understand, is that if he takes out anybody's knee, even unintentionally, he is done. Should have learned to shut his mouth, being vocal and stupid is expensive.

If he would learn to tackle correctly he wouldn't have this problem.

The problem with the "to the head" rule is that it's not just to the head, it's now become to the chest too.   As a defensive player if aim for the players chest  you are still going to make helmet to helmet contact.   So you know what solves that?  You go to the legs and that is all that Merriweather was saying.  Don't believe me?  Take a look at the play that almost ended Jermichael Finley career against the Browns.  T. Gipson went REALLY low on Finley and Finley got lower and got popped in the head.

Brandon isn't sorry.  DeMaurice Smith is sorry for him.  Meriweather won't be sorry until he's paralyzed on a stretcher.... And I can't say I'll feel bad for him either...

You want to gripe about the ticky-tack pass interference rules?  Go for it.  You want to gripe about not being able to hit someone in the head with your helmet, go cry me a river.  What ever happened to wrapping up the ball carrier and driving them to the ground?

Furthermore, whatever happened to making your own apologies?  You can spout off by yourself just fine, but have to let the NFLPA rep apologize for you?  Garbage.

How would you like to be DeMaurice Smith and realize you have to defend this piece of crap?

I am more upset that he was probably made to make an apology.  His point was valid and his comments were taken out of context by a blood thirsty media.  In about 10 years he will seem like a prophet instead of the heathen everyone makes him out to be.

“I spoke to Brandon. He is passionate about the game"

First Dez Bryant then Merrweather. Since when did passion became an excuse for acting like an idiot?

He has nothing to apologize for.  All he did was verbalize what every other player in the league is thinking.

The NFL is unwatchable.  The sport will be nothing in 10 years, or less.

@Old Schoolers You do dis-justice to your screen name by making this comment.  Old School my @$$.  Sound more like a new school, don't hurt anyone when you go to tackle them type of response.

@Cool

Taken out of context?  I watched the video of his comments and they were reported by the media word-for-word and not out of context at all.  You're a moron

@Doug1

Not really.  I doubt other players are too happy with him talking about ending their careers.  Who are you to speak on what every other player in the league is thinking?  You're a nobody

@thebigdawg3

Don't watch then.  I'm pretty sure the NFL will survive without you

@Joe R2 @Cool He said he would hate to end a guys career, but the rules are telling him to take them out low... he simply spoke the truth, he didn't say he was going to purposely tear someones ACL out (like most the headlines report) he said it would be the outcome of the rules he is being forced to abide with.  Now if you can't understand that, then I would suggest you are the bigger moron.
