A Missouri high school football team is capping off its winless season by forfeiting its final game on Friday because a number of its players are choosing to attend a farming convention in Kentucky.

According to Missouri’s News-PressSouth Holt High School in Oregon, Mo. — which has a total of 78 students — decided to cancel its last game of the season, a first-round playoff matchup against Stewartsville, because too many of its players decided to attend the upcoming Future Farmers of America convention in Louisville, Ky.

The eight-man team had already seen a number of its players quit or go down with injuries during the teams winless season, and the forfeit will give South Holt a final record on the year of 0-10. According to CBS Sports, the South Holt Knights were outscored 515-62 over the course of their nine games this season.

It sounds like the students chose to have futures over getting additional brain damage on a football field. Good for them.

This article is mistaken when they call the game South Holt is forfeiting a "playoff" game.  Missouri's football teams are divided up into 5-team districts.  All teams play the other 4 teams in their districts and the team that has the best record in district play moves on to sectional play.  Only the district winner enters the true single elimination playoffs.  Entry into district play is not based on win/loss, but is scheduled before the season begins as part of the regular season play - much like divisions in the NFL.  In theory (but not likely), South Holt could forfeit this game and still win their districts.

I expect a heck of a lot better from SI.

The name of the organization is FFA -- not Future Farmers of America.

You could look it up.

But you didn't.

Playoffs?  Playoffs!  Playoffs?  For a winless team?  What in the world is going on?  Playoffs?

On an unrelated note, Jim Mora's Colts team could beat this HS team NO MATTER what he said during that classic rant!

@ratkins22 Missouri changed its football playoff system last year and now it is a one and done system with nine regular season games and then a seeded district format like basketball, softball, baseball etc...so they are done after the forfeit....

@BillToscano I guess people can complain about anything if they put their minds to it, regardless of how stupid the issue may be.

@BillToscano  Their own website is mildly schizophrenic with regard to this matter.  On the one hand, it reads, "The National FFA Organization (formerly Future Farmers of America) envisions a future in which [...]", yet on the other it also reads, "So today, we are still the Future Farmers of America. But, we are the Future Biologists, Future Chemists, Future Veterinarians, Future Engineers and Future Entrepreneurs of America, too."

Besides, you can't have an acronym without words behind the letters.  Well, I guess you could, but why?  What would be the point?  Is there something about the way the sounds "effeffEY" slide off of the lips and teeth that make the words behind it irrelevant or unnecessary?  I mean, if that's what FFA has done, I guess that's their prerogative, but it's certainly pointless to have an acronym with no words behind the abbreviation.

@John4 I was thinking exactly the same thing!  Nationwide, high school football has turned into t-ball.  There are no losers... everyone's a winner.

FFA is not an acronym. An acronym is pronounced as a word, like "SWAT". FFA is an initialism.
