Joe Montana: San Francisco made ‘terrible effort’ to keep 49ers

The 49ers will be moving to Santa Clara next season to play in their new stadium, located 39 miles from San Francisco. That puts the 49ers the farthest from their own city, out of every team in American sports.

Joe Montana, the 49ers’ legendary quarterback, isn’t pleased with the new move. He is doing promotional work for the NFL in London this week, during which he criticized San Francisco leadership for letting the 49ers move away.

Montana said he understood fans’ wariness of the decision to move. From ProFootballTalk’s report:

“I don’t think there was enough of an effort by people in power at the time to try to keep them there. To me, they made a terrible effort to try to keep them in San Francisco,” Montana said, via CSNBayArea.com.

The 49ers will play their final regular-season game at Candlestick Park, where Montana played his home games, Dec. 23.

Well, Joe, it depends on what you mean by more effort.  If you mean "shoveling more tax money to a bunch of millionaires and/or exempting them from the same rules and regs that govern us mere mortals and/or groveling in return for a bunch of seasonal minimum wage jobs, then to hell with them.

Why would San Fransissyco care anything for a man's sport?

Basically, the 49ers are no longer SF's team. They just carry the name of the city. What a shame.....

who cares. I'm sure a large number of fans don't even live right in the city anyway.

I wish that all cities ignored the requests of billionaire sports owners when they demand taxpayer money. A [insert sport] team is not what cities should be spending their money on.

Two words: Gavin Newsome.  The guy cares more about his hair than the people who voted for him, and he will wear the lose of the 49ers like a burning tire for the rest of his so-called political career.

How he was elected to state office is beyond me, but he has zero chance of moving up now.

Santa Clara…a joke.

The Cowboys don't play in Dallas, so why are they the "Dallas" Cowboys? The City of SF should sue to get their name back... Let them become the Santa Clara 49ers... A semi-pro name for a second-class ownership...

I live in Cincinnati. This city got royally screwed in our football stadium deal. Now the Bengals are demanding an expensive new scoreboard. It never ends. We will pay the price for many years to come for that boondoggle.

And in related news: The Rams are wanting a new stadium paid for by St. Louis.  They can pack their bags back to LA!!

Great.  No city should be held hostage to greedy teams who want new stadiums on the tax payer dime.  HEY JOE you're weathy enough - YOU pay to build a new stadium in SF - hypocrite

Shame on 49ers ownership for not putting fan loyalty over profits.

I'm glad that SF didn't give into the extortion that teams demand now in exchange for "loyalty"."

Santa Clara bent over backwards to get them there while SF wasn't as generous with tax payer money.

Sorry but the ownership of the 49ers should have respected the decades of support from their fans and community to REMAIN in SF rather than running away just to make a few extra bucks.

If an owner can't afford to finance their own stadium with their own money, then they're not rich enough to own the team. Stop the public giveaways and the $100 tickets, the $10 beers, and the $30 parking.

They should also change their name to the "Banana Slugs."  Best college team name ever.

Good for San Fran. It would be nice if a few more cities offered less and made the franchises pay more. The whole notion that sports franchises should be subsidized by cities is beyond idiotic. What's even dumber is that a lot of the people who support wasting money on sports teams are the same ones who run around and whine about giving money to attract legitimate businesses. Think about which one actually gives meaningful jobs to people.

Why should taxpayers support billionaires Joe? Get your head checked.

How about the Golden State 49ers? Seriously, after everything Santa Clara gave them, why not add ask them to change the name? It's 50 minutes away and closer to the larger city of San Jose.

S.F. Made the right choice, to have a team that makes millions and millions of dollars than want the city too ask taxpayers to pay for a new stadium is ridiculous, Other cities should follow their lead and do the right thing for the tax payers.

@DavidHarte No, I doubt very seriously that letting the 49ers go south will cost him politically.

As a Cowboys fan, you are correct. They have not played nor practiced in Dallas since 1971. However, everything is connected in the DFW area and it takes 20 minutes to drive from Dallas to Cowboys Stadium.

You're kidding! I hate domes, but is that place even 20 yrs old yet?

@David46 Indeed.  We need more teams playing in bedroom communities that are dying to market themselves as "up-and-coming" suburban or exurban utopias and want to distinguish themselves from other ticky-tacky towns of recent population increases (Hi there, Glendale, Arizona!) and are willing to spend their middle class tax base's money on stadiums and infrastructure.  Then, some other ticky-tacky exurb can lure them away and the big city can wash its hands of the whole mess.

@MarkMoran  You do realize not a single reader took you seriously when you used "u" instead of "you," right?

@MarkMoran Gotta love it when I guy who doesn't know his facts refers to another poster as a "retard."  Except that there's absolutely nothing to like about anyone using that term - ever.

@MarkMoran I dont think that counts since they aren't the Boston Patriots. New England is the entire region east of New York state.

@RobertReid Joe isn't crying too much. He just got approval to open a restaurant across the street from the new stadium.

Not in that part of California, that's for sure.

@Ebullient @David46

What a snotty post.  Suburbia isn't everyone's cup of tea.  But being a city dweller doesn't make you a superior person.

@morgwon @MarkMoran In any case, Foxborough is closer to Boston than Santa Clara is to San Francisco.

And who refers to Patriots fans as "Boston fans"?
