Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports the Nationals are planning to hire former major leaguer Matt Williams as their next manager. The Nats reportedly also want to retain Randy Knorr as their bench coach.

Bill Ladson of MLB.com reported Thursday Williams was the front-runner to replace Davey Johnson who retired last month.

Williams was third base coach for the Diamondbacks in 2013. He played 17 seasons, including a stint as the Diamondbacks third baseman when current Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo was Arizona’s scouting director.

Ladson reports Rizzo was impressed by the way Williams managed the Salt River Rafters to the finals of the Arizona Fall League last year.

I think this a "player's manager" hire ... especially after Davey Johnson - who's an older, old-school-type manager who lost touch with many of the younger players. Rizzo wants someone who the players can relate to and look up to - and lead in a quiet, yet firm way. Johnson did too much yakking to the media and Williams is probably one of the more stoic guys around.

In other words, makes sense but for a team that had the NL's best record in 2012 and massive disappointment in 2013, it's the wrong hire. The attitude is "win now" and I don't think Williams has enough experience, track record dealing with "high" profile players (like Strasburg and Harper), and seasoning from a strategy stand-point. He'll wear out his welcome.

Charlie Manuel would have been a way better hire, but obviously I'm happy they didn't go in that direction. Of course they have a couple nice young players but overall a pretty mediocre franchise...

Rizzo thinks he's a genius. In truth he's a so-so baseball exec intent on proving he's a genius. That's why he makes non-sensical leaps like this.

I assume he will be asked to go on TV and apologize, and be the subject of Brian Williams editorials and widespread condemnation like Mark McGwire when he became the Cardinals batting coach?  I mean, he was caught buying steroids in 2002.  Or maybe it's possible that crowd are an enormous band of hypocrites far more concerned with records than actual steroid use?

@Richard--Ramirez Great hire, Williams is a perfect players manager and will be sorely missed in Arizona.
