Lakers VP: Kobe Bryant’s extension is our top priority

Kobe Bryant's contract extension is number one on the Lakers front office's list.

Lakers executive vice president of basketball operations Jim Buss says the team is dedicated to keeping Kobe Bryant in L.A., according to ESPN.

Buss, the son of late Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss, told reporters the front office is focused on bringing back Kobe:

“Kobe is a top priority for us. He’s a Laker legend and always will be. I don’t think we’re done winning championships with him yet.”

Bryant is scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the season if a deal is not reached, but Buss says Kobe’s agent and Lakers’ GM Mitch Kupchak are already in negotiations:

‘[Lakers general manager] Mitch Kupchak and [Bryant's agent] Rob Pelinka have been talking, but with him being hurt, it has slowed the process some. I don’t know when it’ll get done, but I have faith in Rob and Mitch to work things out.’

Bryant suffered an Achilles injury late last season and his return is not yet known. He is due to make $30.5 million this season.

They can't win with old ball hog Kobe making a huge salary.

Unless Kobe is taking a massive pay cut, it would be dumb to re sign him.

Tim Duncan took like $10 million when he resigned on the cheap for the Spurs...

Dirk Nowitzki has said he'll take a lot less to resign with the Mavs...  who knows what it will end up being but I think it will be around what The Big Fundamental signed for...

What will Kobe resign for?

@Sportsfan18 20 - 30 Million. I could be wrong but somehow I don't see Kobe signing on the cheap. Also with Kobe feeling the Lakers is his team not sure how many top free agents will join him in LA. I could be wrong but time will tell.

@cry1baby2usa @Sportsfan18 I suspect the same.  That he will go for top dollar.  But I wouldn't offer him that kind of money.  35 years old, coming off a significant Achilles injury and he was already losing a step.  I believe he can still help a team, but not carry a team and $20M+ is "carrying" a team kinda money.

I watched every guard in the league blow past him like he was a statue last year.

Kobe can still score, because he is a terrific shooter, but he can't defend his position, and that's what used to make him so great, that he be the best on both ends.

Kyle Korver can shoot, and he's not worth 30 million a year, because he can't defend his position.
