The NFL announced Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather’s suspension has been reduced from two games to one on appeal.

On Monday, the league suspended Meriweather for two games for repeated violations of NFL’s player safety rules. Meriweather twice drew penalties for illegal hits during the Redskins’ win last Sunday over the Bears. Meriweather exercised his right under the sport’s collective bargaining agreement to an expedited appeal and a ruling before this weekend’s game.

Meriweather’s appeal was heard by former NFL coach Ted Cottrell, an appeals officer jointly appointed by the league and players’ union to hear on-field discipline appeals. He cut the NFL’s original suspension of Meriweather in half. As a result, Meriweather will miss the Redskins’ game Sunday at Denver but will be eligible to return in his team’s Nov. 3 home game against the Chargers.

Meriweather’s reduced suspension will cost him $70,588. His original two-game suspension would have docked him $141,176.

If you actually watched the game on Sunday......only 1 of the 2 penalties called was legitimate. His hit on Jeffry should not have been a penalty....he lead with his shoulder and then their helmets happened to contact .

This is why the NFL reduced the suspension to 1 game.

CRIPES... the NFL can't get its message straight at all...   Meriweather should have had at least a 4 game suspension...   and this, right after they want to add ANOTHER Thursday night game.   They sure care about player safety alright...........  idiots.

The NFL is corrupt. A person like Johnny Jolly gets suspended a whole season for having codeine in his car. Meriweather is blatantly trying to injure other players and gets one game?!?

Maybe Meriweather apologized and promised to be a good boy and promised he would not try to kill his fellow players anymore. It's funny how those hits were such moments of glorified violent macho-ism 20-30 years ago and now they're kinda nauseating. Maybe it's because we now know that Marshall's brain was thumping around like an egg in a can.

Apparently Goodell and his cronies are too stupid to realize what a mixed message this sends to players and fans. You can't say that you're serious about addressing the concussion issue and then let a creep like Meriweather skate with a one game suspension. The hypocrisy continues...

Many of the head to head hits are accidental.  Maybe even most of them.  But a few guys still use the helmet as a weapon to "knock out" opposing players, and this guy is one of them. He even knocked himself out on one play, while trying to concuss another player.

The DC team has one of the worst defenses in the NLF, and this guy is their poster boy.

Godell is just following the example of the NCAA, who as we all know let Johnny "Cash" Manziel get away with snubbing his nose at the rules - hey that's the world we live in, the rules don't apply to everyone - just look at our Upstanding Senators & Representatives!   Oh, also I wish that they would do as Bob "Toupee" Costas suggested and change that offending team name - WASHINGTON!!!

I would kick him out the WHOLE damn season. He is and always will be a dang head hunter. Period

And another thing. What is going on with these players? Who is teaching them to head hunt? They should be hung up by their feet for teaching this style of tackling. I saw the UCLA Cal game the other week and the guy was laid out going out of bounds and in comes the Cal player diving right for the helmet plain as day. Hit him too. If I were the ref he would have got a flag and kicked out! It is disgusting that we have to watch it every stinking week in collage and pro ball. Hell I even seen it in HS ball

Fidell Godell has lost his mind you pay 765 mil. in damages then you let a dback who uses his helmet for a spear off with a 1 game suspension How about this instead of a suspension TAKE HIS HELMET AWAY FROM HIM maybe that will slow him down

Congrats Goodell:  your player safety initiative is officially a joke.  Didn't even need to expand the suspension, just keep it the same.

How the deuce could the suspension be reduced? Charles38 is right, it should have been five games. What a joke this is. I'm embarrassed for the NFL.

I'd love to hear the justification for reducing the suspension.

Talk about a CHOKE job!!!  He should have had his suspension pushed UP to at least 5 games.  This latest reduction does not send any message at all to repeat thugs!!!

@JOHN140 Or maybe too many people have drunk the koolaid in that somehow football becomes a "safe" game if we reduce helmet to helmet hits.

These football players know what they are signing up for when they join the NFL. The rules they are imposing are going to lead to more injuries due to hesitation on the part of players. Maybe less concussions but more injuries.

Are you like12 years old? Those types of hits were pretty common in the 80's and 90's. ESPN used to have a show called "Jacked up" which became "C'mon Man". They showed the best kill shots of the week. This was not invented this year. The league has been trying to get guys to STOP doing it for 10 years. Meriweather is a throwback not a new invention.
