Jackson State University said it plans to sue Grambling State University for financial losses because of a forfeited homecoming game last weekend.

Grambling State football players failed to participate in a game scheduled for last Saturday against Jackson State after they complained to their school administrators about the conditions of the weight room and the treatment of the players.

The team agreed this week to return to the field and play out the rest of the season.

Eric Stringfellow, the executive director of Jackson State’s communications, issued a statement on the school’s website on Tuesday evening.

ELLIS: Report: Grambling State football players to return to field, finish season

Stringfellow said that the school and city of Jackson’s losses “could be in the millions.”  The forfeit could cost Jackson State up to $200,000 in ticket refunds alone.

“The university intends to use litigation to be made whole for our direct and indirect financial losses. Grambling’s issues are well documented and long standing. Those issues, however, are not JSU’s issues nor are these JSU’s responsibility. Grambling repeatedly assured us its team would travel to Jackson. Late Friday afternoon they informed us their student athletes would not travel to Jackson for our scheduled game. We have dealt in good faith with Grambling and the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The actions of both have hurt JSU.”

Jackson State is suing?  The athletes at the end of the day have the right to choose whether or not to play.  They are not paid, and I think Jackson State ought to be ashamed of itself.  When we hear about player exploitation, I usually pooh pooh it because I think a scholarship and room and board are worth a boatload of money;  coming out debt free is a huge advantage.

But suing over lost revenue?  This lawsuit really sheds a lot of light what college football is all about.  Representing Jackson State?  Probably Jim "moneybags" Delaney of the B10.  Why don't they go after the players directly?  Typical hogheaded college administrators.

Grambling should send Jackson a truck load of watermelons and a truck load of chicken wings as compensation and 25 cases of cheap mad dog 20-20.

Just typical bureaucracy BS from Jackson State.  Instead of "let's see what we can do for the Grambling student athletes";  they would rather sue Grambling and take away even more money.  It's the students that understand the real issues and the ones paying the ultimate price !!!!

"Hey, you guys are so poor your athletes pay for their own drinks and you can't bother to clean the mold off the toilets. Things are so bad your players won't even come out to play games...can we have some of your money please?"

I get that it was Homecoming and they can't sell tickets and whatnot, but seriously, what do they hope to get out of a lawsuit at this point? What point is being made here?

Guess it was too much for Jackson State to support the student athletes in their push to get real change going in the program to bring it up to a bare level of standards other student athletes have. Nope, let's pull more blood from the stone and make sure the Grambling Athletes have even less resources at their disposal...

The money machine behind college athletics has become ridiculous.

Well this has certainly gotten off to a happy start, anyone else needing to vent their delusional gripes, bizarre assumptions, racism etc?

I HATE the way our society has become sue happy, but I actually agree with this one.  Grambling ruined Jackson State's homecoming!!!!!!!!

Grambling ain't a real school just a ghetto supplied hangout for future welfare and food stamp recipients and convicts and welfare mothers on drugs.

Football is an idiotic waste of time. The people involved with televising it are the most ignorant neanderthals to walk on this planet. College football should be forbidden until the end of America. It is a waste of energy and causes many early deaths from head injuries...

Why are you even on here commenting about HBCUs when you're obviously a racist? You can't even come up with original would-be insults. Go crawl back into the backwoods swamp from which you came. You probably didn't even attend a technical school.

JSU has every right to try and recoup losses over one the biggest games of the year. It was Homecoming. Do you know how much money was spent on advertising/preparation and how much money was lost in parking/concessions revenue and ticket sales? People, old and young, took time off from work and traveled across many states to be here. Vendors and the city lost money, but no one seems to care about that. Grambling's financial and leadership woes should not be passed on to any other institution. I'm glad the players brought attention to a long-standing problem, but all decisions come with consequences. It could have been handled a lot better on all of their parts, but making JSU foot the bill for some uninvited drama is not cool.

@joeshine730 There is no room for you and your racist comments on these boards.  At least if you choose to be so outwardly racist, give your real name and address so you can stand behind your "bold" words.

It's not JSU's responsibility to help fund Grambling's football program. I don't recall any GSU alum making donations to J State. Your comment insinuates that JSU should possess a greater alligience to Grambling than it should for home. It's unfortunate what dire conditions their players have to face, much of which could have been avoided if a more proactive administration/staff were in place. This, however, in no way negates GSU's obligation to fulfill its contractual commitment to JSU. All schools rely on revenue from big sporting events to help off-set the costs associated with running the program. Why should we lose ALL the way around...no HOMECOMING game-day experience AND no money?!? Come on! I live in Jxn, am a JSU grad, and student who donated lost money back into the program. I'm positive that there are many GSU alum/fans in better positions than I who can make even the smallest sacrificial gifts to help their program. Just saying.

@Aggie81   Jackson is hurting for money and yet want them to give more money to Grambling?  Why doesn't A&M, with their hundreds of millions from TV and Manziel jersey sales, give a million or so to Grambling?

Merv

@Wesley7   They can afford to pay the players to play football. (scholarships)  The players can honor the contract.  Thing is, few of the Grambling players would ever get a free College Education if it wasn't for Football and now they are trying to kill the Golden Goose.

Go figure

@InternetDenizen  Yeah, because it is Jackson's fault that Grambling didn't drop football years ago.  Jackson has money so they should give it to Grambling because......well just because they have money and Grambling doesn't.

@joeshine730 It is amazing how racist behavior and statements can be hidden behind aliases and these anonymous internet boards.  Your words joeshine are absolutely disgusting and have no place in our society.

@joeshine730  what do u base this on. Do you have any data to support you claim. Or are you just using skin color as your evidence. If you only knew the number of people that graduated and have good jobs. Racism is a live and well on the internet. I don't think america will ever learn.

FYI I graduated in spring 2007 with a degree in Marketing (3.68 GPA) and work for a fortune 500 company. But all this doesn't matter to you.

@Merv @Aggie81  According to the NCAA, they aren't Manziel jersey's remember. They don't make money off a players likeness. At least that is what their lawyers are saying in the O'Bannon case. What a joke huh.

@Merv

Texas A&M is a State of Texas "Public" college and already support other Universities and Colleges across the State.  During the past 20 years, several smaller Colleges have been "taken in" under the A&M umbrella.  The most recent is a graduate law school.

@Merv @Wesley7 Thanks for sticking to the talking points. Want to answer the actual question I asked now?
