Giants RB Brandon Jacobs tweets screenshot of death threat
New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs tweeted on Tuesday a screenshot of a death threat he received on the social media site, saying to his fans, “look at what we deal with…”
The threat appears to have come from a football fan who likely has Jacobs on his fantasy team. The man making the threat told the two-time Super Bowl champion that if he doesn’t rush for 50 yards and two touchdowns in the team’s game vs. the Minnesota Vikings this past Monday night, his life and the lives of his family members would end.
Jacobs, 31, would end up sitting out the game with a lingering hamstring injury. The Giants went on to grab their first victory of the season.
According to a report Tuesday from the New York Daily News, the matter has been turned over for investigation by NFL security.
In subsequent tweets by the man, he said he was sorry for the message and hoped Jacobs understood that he was just joking:
“BRO RELAX ITS NEVER THAT SERIOUS…ITS JUST TWITTER MAN. I TRUELY APOLOGIZE I COULD NEVER ACTUALLY DO THAT. RETWEET THIS PLEASE. FORGIVE ME MAN ITS NOT EVEN LIKE THAT… REALLY IM TRYNA BE YOUR FRIEND !! BRUH STOP PLAYING …YOU KNOW THAT AINT SERIOUS AND I APOLOGIZE. PLEASE ACCEPT ? BRANDON.. CAN YOU AT LEAST TALK ABOUT IT TO ME I REALLY DIDNT MEAN IT.”
Giants head coach Tom Coughlin weighed in on the situation during a conference call with the media:
“You’re always concerned about the player and his family. And for young people to have to worry about something like that, it’s not necessary. It’s not a part of what we do. I’m not going to speculate on social media. I’m just concerned about however this would be revealed, that it’s wrong and it has no business in our game.”
