Jim Leyland announced Monday that he is stepping down as Tigers manager. FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal first reported that Leyland planned to retire.

Leyland, 68, reportedly told his players it was time for someone younger to step in and do the job at the end of the ALCS. The Tigers were eliminated by the Red Sox in Game 6 Saturday.

Leyland won two pennants (2006 and 2012), three AL Central titles and made the playoffs four times with a record of 700-597 in his eight seasons in Detroit. He amassed a record of 1769-1728 in 22 MLB seasons with the Pirates, Marlins, Rockies and Tigers.

From his days with the Pirates to now with the Tigers, Leyland is exactly what I think of when I picture a baseball manager.  Good luck Jim.

Should have stepped down at the end of last year , now the Tigers must get rid of their obese and overrated first baseman

Sorry to see him go; did a great job during his time in Detroit.

It is not his fault they lost; upper managment never addressed the bullpen issues during his time here. Baseball will miss him; and I think the Tigers' players will as well.

Anyone that bashes him should remember this; Leyland does not hit and cannot make Prince Fielder drive in any runs.

Two pitches buried him and the tigers. Both grand slams, both game winners. Just goes to show how thin the margin is between victory and defeat in baseball.

lot of respect for Leyland from this fan as well.  Wish he had gotten the Phils' job many years ago instead of Mumbles Manuel.   Still with the staff and the talent the Tigers have amassed of late, something is wrong that they never manage to go further than they do each season.  Probably time for a change, which Leyland himself acknowledged and offered, which just serves to enhance the guy's classy legacy.

As much as I like Leyland and appreciate his time with the Tigers this may be a good time for a change.  There is that unknown "something" missing on this team.  Not sure if is Leyland but a small shake up is needed.  Upgrading half of the bullpen is a good start.

Not a Tigers fan but lots of respect for Leyland. Best of luck to him in whatever he does after baseball.
