The Cincinnati Reds will put second baseman Brandon Phillips on the open market with “all intents” of trading him this offseason, reports USA TODAY.

Phillips, 32, has four years and $50 million left on his contract and the team reportedly decided a month ago to see if they can get back value by trading the three-time All-Star.

Phillips hit .261 with 18 home runs, 103 RBI and a .310 on-base percentage this season for the Reds.

He was upset earlier this season when he felt he was lied to regarding his contract status after Joey Votto signed a 10-year extension.

“To this day, I’m still hurt. Well, I don’t wanna say hurt,” Phillips said. “I’ll say scarred. I’m still scarred. It just sucks that it happened. For [Castellini] to sign somebody for $200 million, there must be a new vegetable or fruit coming out that we don’t know about. For him to do something like that and tell me they didn’t have any more money, that’s a lie. But what can I do? I just feel like it was a slap in my face.”

Phillips cookecd his own goose when he rapped Mr. C. What I can't figure out is why Jocketty gave him that big contract anyway. Another Jocketty gaffe. It just makes it that much harder to trade him. On the Uggla trade, a top prospect would have to be included for a .179 hitter that strikes out as much as Bruce for a deal. But the Reds only have two chips to play to get a righthanded bopper. Phillips and Chapman. It won't be Chapman, he will start next season.

The Braves will take an even swap for Dan Uggla.  They may even throw in a couple of prospects.  Anything to get a second baseman that hits over .200

sounds almost like trading Tony Perez. Phillips is the energy & spirit of the team as well as a fan & community favorite.

If I'm the Pirates, I'm on the phone right now.

Wanted trade partner for purpose of sending you a 32 year old secondbaseman who has 4 years and $50M to go on contract.  OPS has dropped from .810 in 2011 to .750 in 2012 to .706 in 2013.  WAR dropping from 4.9 in 2011 to 3.8 in 2012 to 1.6 in 2013.  Defensive stats sliding too.  Good luck with that Reds.

As a Pirates fan, I'd love to see him in black and gold. Moving Neil Walker to 1st base would be an upgrade over everything we've had down there, including Morneau. And having Phillips' fire would be tremendous.

His 103 RBI last season is a bit misleading. Choo led off and got on base often, and Joey Votto seems to think he gets $250 million to walk and single often, so he also got on base in front of Phillips all the time.

  Cardinals fan here:

Brandon Phillips is a very talented player   He does have issues with show-boating, etc.  A few years ago he made a comment (that started a brawl) that he hates the Cardinals, and will never play for them.   Not that the Cardinals need a 2nd baseman... but perhaps comments like that won't work very well for him when a team seems inclined to dump him.

Product of a small market trying to act like a big market with handing out contracts they cant afford. At least they try to keep their own but he is not worth it and trading him is best. Now about that $200 million dollar first base man...

@DarrellStanaford He's also a big mouthed whiner. Would you have a job if you called your boss a liar? No tact or class.

@DarrellStanaford Do you really believe that ,he is seen im some areas as a wise guy who has hurt the Reds on and off the field

@PotsosSTL Why would we want him?  We've got Neil Walker.  Hit just below Phillips this year in his bad year, great fielder, team player, great attitude.  Try the Yankees instead.

We'd rather play Holliday at second base and bat Kozma cleanup. Thanks, but no thanks.

@Alex1111 I'm a Pirates fan too - but that's just a terrible idea.  Our Bucs have Great chemistry, Phillips would destroy that.  Besides, he's overpaid now and continuing to go downhill.  Keep Neil at 2nd and Morneau at 1st.

If they packaged him with Johnny Cueto, I could stop hating the Reds and start hating the Pirates.

@RichW What?   His RBI total was misleading?   As a lead off guy Choo's job was to get on base. Votto's job was to get on base as well.   Then the next guy, Phillips, knocks them in.  Those 103 RBI are as black and white as a stat can be.

@Dave C Yeah, a guy who visits little league parks, hospitals, etc is a jerk.  You know nothing.  Does he showboat a little?  Yes.  Is he a jerk.  No Way.

@Michael10 I 100% agree.  I would rather put 8 people on the field than have to deal with this egotistical idiot.  He's already burned that bridge.

A declining middle infielder with no plate disciple could drive in 100 runs batting cleanup in that lineup...

Oh, wait. He did
