Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones told Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Daily that the NFL is discussing playing two games on Thursday nights. Jones’ quote appears to contradict statements from NFL Public Relations executives on Tuesday denying a Wall Street Journal report.

Jones also serves as chairman of the NFL Network Committee. The NFL Network could use a Thursday doubleheader as a package for attracting more viewers and enhancing its status with cable and satellite providers.

From SportsBusiness Daily:

[Jones] replied affirmatively to a question about whether the NFL was discussing the doubleheader concept.

He said, “We could easily have a doubleheader on Thursday. I don’t think that is out of the realm of thought, we haven’t set up how we will do it.” All options are open, he said, when asked if a second Thursday night game would also air on NFL Network or elsewhere.

BANKS: Week 7 picks include Colts upset special

On Wednesday, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy denied the Journal‘s story, saying the league had not considered expanding to two games on Thursday nights.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello echoed McCarthy’s denial, saying the league had not even discussed it.

The Thursday night games are already bad and they want to add another one?  Bad idea NFL you're getting too greedy.

DEAR NFL:    If you are to continue to play games on Thursday then please stop pretending to care about player safety.  We know and you know it's only about money.

What about a Friday night game? Why have 2 games in 1 night when they can have games almost every night of the week, And people would stay up and watch the whole game on Friday as well

I think NFL teams should play double-headers, like MLB teams do... or at least back-to-back home-and-home series.

Night games this season have been amazingly boring. Yea, let's double down.

MORE!! They almost have football every night if you add in the college games... it is great. Some of the best games are the un ranked college games....now, throw in more NFL and it would be great !!

Just my opinion, but i vote yes!

How's abt  a game every night of the week?  That way you could play some games on back to back nights.  Safety first right Roger?

Great! Why don't we dilute Sunday football a little more. After a full day of football what everyone wants to do is sit down and watch some more at night. Monday night has become unwatchable.

So we have head injuries on the increase, so let's let the players heal in less time! This is just stupid, Thursday night football is a flop as it is and now they want to just add more. Money hungry owners.

Dependant on the time zones and when the games are played a lot people are not going to be bothered watching unless the follow the teams playing. People have jobs to get up for the next day

Jerry said earlier this year he has the mind of a 30 year old.... But when I look at his picture he looks like they dug him up 30 years ago... Sheesh this dude looks like a fossil.

plus also the reports that are discussing a doubleheader on thursday, is that the nfl is talking with netflix and google and not the nfl network, and netflix may have seemed like a joke 3 or 4 years ago, not so much now as netflix series got emmy nominations

Thursday night football is pretty awful as is. Please don't double the amount of awfulness, NFL. Pro football is meant to be played on Sunday afternoons.

Listening to a jerry jones interview is like getting a tooth pulled.  He sounds like this:   "Well  ahhhh  these two guys were ahhhhhh running to our side ahhhhhhhhh I think we ahhhhhhh missed a tackle or something ahhhhh......  The man maybe rich but his speaking ability is HILARIOUS!!!!!!

The NFL could easily do this if it didn't insist on having Thursday night games every week of the season. Thursday night games are often division games. Have a team play on Thursday right after it's bye week and then not play again until the next following Sunday (play on Sunday, then bye week, then play on Thursday, then off until Sunday a week later). To do this, the NFL would need to not have Thursday night games until bye weeks start, but then it could have two games each Thursday because four teams would be on bye the week prior.

The NFLPA would very likely go along with this, because it gives players national exposure while giving them essentially two 10 day breaks midseason. Plus it would up the TV money, which in turn ups player salaries.

One more piece of evidence to show what an idiot Jerry Jones is.  Right on the heels of the spokesmen saying that it has never come up or been discussed, Jerry opens his mouth and basically tells everyone "hey those two guys lied to you".  lol  Yeah that is what the NFL wants Jerry you pointing out the office's lies.

Double header Thursday is a terrible idea.  I don't know anyone that watches both MNF games on the first weekend of the year when they do the double header except maybe the fans of the two teams that play the late game.

Also the players are openly voicing how much they HATE the Thursday games.  The owners keep doing this crap they are on their way to getting another strike.

The Thursday night games are like winning the lottery. The Under number wins about 70% of the time. The team that plays on Thursday night cover the spread in their next game 80% of the time. Keep them coming.

It's no wonder the players do not trust the owners. Their spokesmen apparently blatantly lied when this came up.

One of the beauties of football is it was generally played one day and one night a week. Now it is three nights a week and once the byes starting kicking in the season, there aren't many good games left for Sunday. There is only way to kill the game and they are doing it by showing it too much.

I want games EVERY night. Let the teams have a half a dozen rosters to rotate throughout the week. You know, a Sunday team, a Monday team, and so on.  PLUS, we can have winter teams, summer teams, and on and on so we can can football every nigh of the year. And if you think this is impossible,...well, think again. Because these trial balloons are being floated for a very definite reason.

just another wasted idea from the owner of  "Americas" team----HAH!

scotto80

Wow let's expand the playoffs and play a game every night of the week!  We can combine the 80% make the playoffs format of the WNBA and the nearly game everyday format of baseball! Rolling in dough!.

There's already a game on Sunday, Monday and Thursday nights, as well as all the Sunday regular games. I think it's fairly clear the NFL is at its saturation point. A doubleheader on Thursday, what a horrible idea. When would the second game end, 2 a.m. EST? With no team in L.A., that's like the ultimate thumbs up your own asses move.

nycsports4life

@CJ65  Exactly. I used to love the Thursday night games, because they were so rare. You got one to open then season and then you had to wait to Thanksgiving to get another. But now with a game on Sunday, Monday and Thursday night and the college games all day and night Saturday, it's just too much, too often. If I had my way, Monday Night Football would go to the chopping block as would the season-round Thursday night games.

@nycsports4life Right.  The NFL clearly knows nothing about running an entertainment business.   No wonder they're in such dire straits financially.

No, no...not an entertainment business. Don't forget, they're a non-profit organization. They pay no taxes despite bringing in billions of dollars each year.
