The Dallas Cowboys are still America’s Team even though they haven’t won a Super Bowl since 1996. A Harris Poll show the Cowboys are the most popular team among American football fans for the second consecutive year, via SportsBusiness Daily.

The Cowboys franchise previously earned another NFL best ranking as the league’s most valuable team — worth an estimated $2.3 billion — by Forbes in August.

The Cowboys reign over a Harris Poll top-5 that includes the No. 2 Packers, No. 3 Broncos, No. 4 Giants and No. 5 Patriots.

BANKS: NFL Week 7 picks

While the Cowboys — who haven’t been to the playoffs since 2009 — remained on top, the NFL’s biggest mover in popularity was the the Broncos, who jumped from a tie at No. 17 in 2011 to No. 3.

Other teams enjoying significant increases in popularity include the 49ers (No. 16 to No. 8), Seahawks (No. 27 to No. 12), Raiders (No. 25 to tied for No. 16), and Bengals (No. 31 to No. 24).

Peyton Manning’s move to Denver likely played a part in the Broncos’ rise and had a negative impact on his former team, the Colts, who fell from No. 6 to No. 19.

Other teams taking a fall were the Steelers (No 2 to No. 7), Redskins (No. 8 to No. 14), Jets (tied for No. 9 to No. 15), Falcons (No. 15 to No. 20), Panthers (No. 20 to No. 27), and Titans (No. 21 to No. 31).

Which team is the NFL’s least popular? The Jaguars repeated as the 32nd-ranked team for the second year in a row.

Hello,

Sports merchandising is a massive business, with retail sales of NFL merchandise alone totalling upwards of 3 billion in 1998. But it could never have been so popular without the insight of America's favorite cowboy.

If you define "America" as the Dallas-Fort Worth area, then they're America's team. Otherwise, they're a bunch of also-rans who don't play as a team and an arrogant owner who thinks that OWNING a team means you're also a football expert. Maybe Jones is confusing himself with George Halas...who owned a team AND was a true football expert.

Run by an arrogant billionaire who refuses to listen to advice from anyone; and locked in mediocrity because people with money and no real knowledge are in charge?  That really IS America!

Riiight. I'm certain this poll was taken in Texas, and selected population pockets of Romosexuals...

enjoying  the reaction, but it is what it is, real fans follow their team when winning, losing or having mediocre seasons, most popular team in America, you are what u are!

Packers the real America's Team. Last time I checked, actual fans own the team not some billionaire. Doesn't get more grass roots than that.

Duh! Whether people love the Dallas Cowboys or hate them they're the most talked about team ever. Therefore they're the most popular team of all time.

How bout them COWBOYS!

All this poll reflects is that Texas is a big state. The Cowboys are the team for most of Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Outside of those areas they are despised. They were widely popular in the days of Don Meredith and especially Roger Staubach. It has been a long time since I have seen a Texan bold enough to wear his colors in Denver. Most are happily jumping on the Broncos bandwagon.

Wow, the Bears are 6th... sweet.

"America's team" suggests deep and broad support across the entire country, not simply edging out a few other teams out of 32 for top ranking. I suspect they'd top a poll for most despised as well, and by a considerably stronger margin.

Even in the Washington, DC area where I am from - and Redskins territory - during football season on any given day - you'll see someone wearing a Cowboys t-shirt, flying Cowboys flags on there cars, etc.  And a good number of these fans that I have met are from all over the country.  They are definitely the most popular NFL team.

I wish the so called experts stop calling them "America's Team".  There are many teams I would pick before the DC and that seems to be the mentality of people from texas, that everything is bigger and better in texas. DC is like the Yankees, let's throw alot of money at it and we will have the best damn team around. Well, that might have worked awhile ago, but now the other franchise's have caught up to them and they no longer will be the dominant teams in sports. I for one, cheer for anyone that beats DC or the Yankees and that will be happening for many years to come...Amen!

Americas team hasn't won a playoff game since 96

Jags should get Tebow as QB just to fill seats...They cannot get any worse and they might actually start winning. If nothing else jersey sales and attendance would go up....

BS, the packers are America's #1 Team.

Even as a Cowboy fan since the early 70's, I'm sick of hearing about how we're "America's Team."

Of course, along with an article like this come the idiots of the world grasping at the lowest hanging fruit: Cowgirls suck, haven't won a Superbowl in decades, Romo's a choker, Jerry is a tool, blah, blah, blah.

Yeah, we know...a team as popular as ours is going to attract the greatest share of morons crying about a moniker that, frankly, was quite genius back in the day.

So get over it, dill-holes, we know you hate us. Just move along, because we've heard it all.

The great thing is... whether you love or hate the cowboys, you're talking about them and there is no such thing as bad press.

There is no such thing as America's team, the Cowboys are the most over hyped team in professional sports.

The Cowgirls are a bunch a wussies and will always be just that!

I'm surprised to hear this.  I live in the middle of West Texas cowboy country, and I can remember when churches altered their meeting times depending on kickoff time.  Now, I honestly don't know anyone who really cares whether they are playing or not.  I don't know where they are "America's Team," but it's not where I live any more.  And probably won't be again until JJ is gone.

BTW, The Packers do it from the smallest Professional city in the country!

Though 'AT' is rarely tossed about these days, western / film noir legend Alan Ladd said it best in Shane ('53), “Right or wrong, the brand sticks.” And stick it has. The name was made for the blue-star bunch and looks good on ‘em.  But it might be time to find a stand-in America's Team, until Cowboys earn back their spurs.

Bummer ..for the Cowboy haters. :)

And the national sports media, it hurts doesn't it - you do not matter. :) :)

And Raider fans are more fans of being a Raider fan (and all the hype/mystique/cred/BS) that goes with it, then they are of the actual team. Most of the Raider fans I come across don't know much about their team, they just know they won Super Bowls a long time ago. They just like to wear Raiders stuff on the days they aren't wearing their Harley shirts (even though they don;t own a bike) or their Tap Out/Afflction shirts.

RobLambeth

The diehards all love their team, and every team has diehards. So this pool is basically: who is the favorite team of fans who don't really care.

You wish that were true but you might want to pay attention to the Cowboys road games. Cowboy fans all over the country fill those stadiums. Its also while they get so many prime time games every year and why they will never have the Thanksgiving game taken away. HUGE draw.

@dallasal10 Yup, I wear mine all season and at the last 3 skins home games against the boys! And I was born and raised in St. Louis, MO showing my age been a fan since I was 5 yrs old sitting with my uncles seeing the "REAL TD" run 99 yards for a touchdown on monday night football. Hell yeah America's Team..

@ShifterKart They'll be ok. They are going to get the first pick and take a real quarterback in Teddy Bridgewater. No need to sign some street free agent no other team wants.

@RickEger Well I dunno about over hyped, but they get the most media coverage....because they're popular. Not too hard to figure that out.

The Cowboys may be a bunch of wussies, but the team will turn over through drafting and free agent signings during the off-season.

You, on the other hand, are an idiot. Ain't nothing changing that!!!

@Dustin3 @RickEger - The most media coverage goes to the Patriots and Broncos these days. The Giants and Jets are usually at the top as well, when they are at least ok.

@Peoplespeoplespeoples haha you troll. Commenting on a Cowboys thread, only ups the overall discussion on the Cowboys, upping the number of page hits, and subsequently the revenue for any website that features a Cowboys story. The one with the most $$$ makes the rules... that's the AMERICAN way!
