Mike Ditka says not running in Senate race against Barack Obama is his ‘biggest mistake’

NFL Hall of Famer Mike Ditka said that one of his biggest mistakes was not running for the United States Senate seat in Illinois in 2004.

His opponent would have been Barack Obama, who went on to win the race and, in 2008, become the first African-American elected President of the United States.

Ditka was at North Dakota’s Oil Patch recently to give a speech and told a crowd how he felt about not running against Obama.

“Biggest mistake I’ve ever made,” Ditka said to the Dickinson Press. “Not that I would have won, but I probably would have and he wouldn’t be in the White House.”

Ditka, who coached the Chicago Bears to a Super Bowl Championship, said he was “the luckiest guy in the world.”

“If somebody would have told me 40 years ago they’d pay you to be on TV, I would have said ‘You’re crazy.’ They pay me to be on TV and talk about something I like to talk about, football. That’s almost insane. Sometimes the guys on TV are insane, by the way.”

Yeah, Mikey. That was your biggest mistake. And such a loss for our great democracy, no Senator Ditka!

Would have never won, not when the media would have uncovered that skeleton in old ditka's closet. The one where he and Hannity got...it...on. Yes drinks were involved but still.

Looks like quite the Democrat flash-mob here.

How many of you are being paid?  After all, Barack and his buds have plenty of (laundered tax) money to spend on rent-a-trolls.

Only because in retrospect it would confirm that you're an old racist loon. Thank heavens.

Boy, it's tough remembering Mike Ditka the player when Mike Ditka the pundit says stuff like, "I'm smarter than Obama and would've beaten him a Senate race---if only I weren't too afraid to run."

Let's hope better helmet technology becomes available soon before another generation has to go down the same road as Mike did.

Thanks a lot, Mike Ditka, for not running and allowing Obama into the Senate only later to become this country's President not once but twice. You know, for all of Bush's 8 years in office I thought Bush was the worst President in history. Now, yep, now I realize I was wrong. Bush was the second worst President in history. May whoever is elected in 2016 be a miracle worker because this country needs one.

If you were Ditka, you would also want people to ignore your starting Flutie over McMahon after the Super Bowl win and your entire tenure in New Orleans

Hmmm....so the guy that traded the entire Saints draft for one player would have been a good Senator.

Ditka is an idiot.

If Didka had had  Valerie Jarrett for his brain (as obama does), he would have won........but then, the results would have been the same now...........right?

Let's not pretend any of you who voted for Obama voted for him based on any of his policies.  Most of you that did voted for him because he was a Democrat, which is your party.  The rest that voted for him did so because he was flashier than McCain.  That's ultimately what politics are all about.

So knowing that, of course Ditka would have won.  He's one of the two most popular figures in the state, right next to Michael Jordan.  You tell me to vote for the flashy guy who won us a Super Bowl versus the flashy guy that didn't, 10 times out of 10 Ditka wins.

And I know that a lot of people are reading this going "That's extremely stupid," but before you say that, think to yourself what would happen if your top sports guy opted to run against someone you didn't know?  Because I guarantee you you would make that same decision.

Wow, I just lost all respect for Mike Ditka.  That happened fast...

chicago elects some horrible people, but I doubt that ditka would have been considered for senator.

The only thing that would have come of Ditka running for the Senate is that he would have come out of it looking like a fool.

Great football player/coach, but the guy is dumb as bricks. No way he would've won.

@HectorRiquelme No talent? He is considered one of the best tight ends of all time and was the first tight end ever inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  He also won the NFL Championship with the Bears, two Super Bowls with the Cowboys as a player, and one with the Bears as a coach. He had 5x Pro Bowl selections and also won NFL Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1988 by the Associated Press, The Sporting News, and Pro Football Weekly.

No talent? I think you are the one who is a mental case...

@MidwestGolfFan You know, they're everywhere! The Obamabots are on call and ready to spout his agenda and disinformation on every forum and website known to man. They are like a bunch of roaches. See how fast they scatter when you try and you logic.

@Kalzy How is he a racist? Oh right, because anyone is who doesn't blindly follow the dear leader...not because he's a failure as a president, it's cause he's blaaaack... Go crawl back into your hole, you brainwashed loon

@MadPanda Never said he'd be a good senator, just that he probably would have beaten Obama and thus undercut his presidential aspirations.

True and true...

@BosephHeyden Sure. Because the skills that make someone a good athlete are exactly the same skills that make them good at running the country.

ChrisBird

@BosephHeyden Because all people ... not just sports fans, which contrary to your tiny worldview, don't make up 100% of the population ... choose the "flashy" candidate, not the one with, oh, I don't know, half a brain.  Just because you are popular doesn't mean you are qualified to lead.  All it would have taken is one televised debate to show how dumb Ditka is.

@sjaudey Let's face it -- Obama got elected, so anything is possible.

ShelleighFar

@ChrisBird @BosephHeyden I've seen Obama in a televised debate with Romeny, you know the 1st one? He got hammered. The idiot can't talk without either the moderator babying him or his teleprompter... Empty suit, Mancharian president, puppet... with just enough charisma to keep you mesmerized.

As...uh...opposed to...um...uh...Obama, who was down by a dozen points to Fitzgerald, until the Dems had a corrupt judge Federal judge outside Illinois unseal Fitzgerald's divorce record.

@ChrisBird @BosephHeyden well Al Franken was elected in Mn after a dubious recount in which Franken gained over a thousand votes and his opponent lost over 500 votes. Al Franken? Puleeze.

@foolishness @dabbas3461 You're definitely right when you say it doesn't require smarts -- look at the moron we have had in the White House since 2008.

With his recent behavior, should we be calling it the Spite House?

@ChrisBird @GT500456 What's Obama's approval rating? Oh right, 37 percent... Looks like some of the sheep have woken up on your side, too :(

@GT500456 Yes, and the guy before him was so good and so brilliant and made the country such a better place during his eight years that even his own party wants nothing whatsoever to do with him.
